Do you think a goalie will ever go 1st OA again?

If your scout tells you that a goalie is going to be the best player in the draft you fire him.

No one knows nothing when it comes to goalies.

Oh my god is that ever terrible.

The best two players I see are Briere and Chara. Kaberle as well, I suppose, but still... Briere has really fallen off, and Chara developed late. Wow. Awful, awful draft. Is that the worst in modern history?
to my knowledge its the worst draft since the current format was adopted... if anyone knows about worse than that one, please correct me

Thing about that is Roy went in the 3rd round and Hasek in the 10th. Scouts have a really, really difficult time projecting goalies.
thats why I've said Potential... if I look at history, the 2 GL that were picked 1st overall DiPietro and Fleury, are far from being best of all time GL.... not even sure if one of the two will be in the HHOF

No. There is a ridiculous amount of goaltending parity in the league right now, and a top goaltender is not worth that much.

It would have to take a goalie allowing one goal or getting a shutout every single game in the minors for him to go first overall and even then teams would probably think long and hard about it.

Long story short it likely won't happen ever

Not likely since goalies can't dominate in juniors like they do in the NHL.

Only sport were it gets easier in the pros and your stats improve. .. Nothings easier than an nhl shutout.

Just ask the #1 drafted goalie..

Only 3 goalies have ever been drafted 1st overall. The time between the first and second was 32 years then another one 3 years later. Maybe ~30 years is the magic time frame?

If there's ever a goalie who is 7' and plays with the athleticism of Hasek and also great technique I'd say yeah they might be taken 1st overall

depending on the draft class, the Teams Need, the GM in place.... sure it could happen in a weak draft with a great goalie prospect. Don't expect it to happen but it could

yes, its jst a matter of time until some 6'8+ 300lbs genetic freak chose to be a goalie instead of playing football.

Time for someone to add the picture from "Stuck on you", 4th page already:shakehead. I can`t at the moment.

Truth be told, even the best NHL goalies of today didn't really separate themselves too much from the rest of the pack in their draft years. And nobody here can see the possibility of a generational talent coming along at that position? It might not happen for another 100 years, but there absolutely could be someone like that.

With goaltenders tending to bloom in their mid-20's, theres no reason to draft them high, unless they're unquestionable to be a generational talent goaltender. And even then...a lot of Habs fans at the time felt such a high pick was wasted on Price.

I remember that. Price has proven the doubters wrong, but the fears at the time were not unfounded. Also, with only 60 NHL goaltending jobs available, it's hard to break in.

This and is it worth a gamble? No it isn't. Which proven goalies you CAN`T get via trade with this years nr. 1 (or 2) overall pick for example?

Nope, never again. In fact, the NHL timeline will break down into BMAF and AMAF (before and after Marc Andre Fleury) whence goalies were taken first overall and afterwards never again.

That's a pretty rough generalisation considering that there have only been three goalies ever taken first overall in an NHL entry draft:

1968 - Michel Plasse (Montreal Canadiens)
2000 - Rick DiPietro (New York Islanders)
2003 - Marc-Andre Fleury (Pittsburgh Penguins)

I think drafting a goalie in the first round, let alone first overall, is a waste. There's too much pressure to rush them into the NHL when they're drafted so high, and it's a position that typically takes time and patience to develop properly. I'd be looking at maybe the 3rd round as the earliest I'd take a goalie; not because any of them lack the talent to go higher, but because it's going to take them longer to make an impact at the NHL level.

Who where nummber 2 pick in 2000 and 2003?
