Do you think a goalie will ever go 1st OA again?

Probably not. Fleury's been a good goalie but not a world beater so no no more goalie #1 picks.

Never is a long time but it would appear there definitely has been a league wide shift away from taking goalies high.

When was the last time a goalie went top 10? Price in '05?

I think development of the player at that position is just too hard to predict and the payoff (if everything goes well) is just too far down the road for a club to justify using a high pick on a goalie.

It would take such a unique set of circumstances, so not likely soon.

Nope, never again. In fact, the NHL timeline will break down into BMAF and AMAF (before and after Marc Andre Fleury) whence goalies were taken first overall and afterwards never again.

No. Never. They say never say never...but the answer is 100% never. Never never never.

...

Unless Edmonton is still drafting 1st after filling every other position with 1st overall picks. ... so...maybe.

if there's a 1996esque draft again and there's a GL who has Roy/Hasek/Brodeur potentials... I could see it happens yes, but besides that a big no

Oh my god is that ever terrible.

The best two players I see are Briere and Chara. Kaberle as well, I suppose, but still... Briere has really fallen off, and Chara developed late. Wow. Awful, awful draft. Is that the worst in modern history?

Thing about that is Roy went in the 3rd round and Hasek in the 10th. Scouts have a really, really difficult time projecting goalies.

Hasek was only drafted so late because he was playing behind the Iron Curtain and there was no guarantee that he would ever even be able to come to North America.

If he were a N. American or Scandinavian prospect, he might not have been a 1st rounder (because of his unconventional style) but he wouldn't have been a 10th rounder either.

i bet u can prove with some statistic that 1oa goalies do (not) bust more than the other roles.

Highly unlikely. We could see one go 10-15 (maybe higher) in the next 10-15 years.

For 1st overall it would need to be a combination of a very weak year of skaters, a guarantee that the goalie is going to be on a Roy/Brodeur/Hasek-esqe level, and a team that needs a goalie holding the first pick (or willing to trade the 1st pick to a team who desperately wants said goalie).

I just don't see it happening, for a long, long time. Isn't Dipietro the only goalie to go 1st? I don't think anyone wants to repeat that mistake. Luongo went 4th. Roy went 51st and Brodeur went 20th. Most of the best goalies have been drafted later.

With a much greater number of forwards and dmen coming up thru the minors, it's much more likely that you will have a few standout skaters that a team will take a chance over a goalie.

Probably because of the gap between a great goalie and a good one isn't as great as it once was so there isn't a need to make such a great investment in one. Same reason there won't be a running back to go 1st overall in the NFL baring a huge shift in how the game is played at the professional level.

Not for awhile. But the right recipes like a prodigy goalie, weak skater class, goalie needy team and above all an incompetent GM and it could happen.

I mean no one thought in the modern NFL that a kicker would be drafted in the 1st round again yet Al Davis did....

Not for a long time, if ever, but only because it's too easy to find a goalie now. You can't sign a #1C in free agency, but you can definitely find a starting goalie

Let us say a goalie got exceptional status play in the OHL... would you be more tempted to take them 1OA?

As others pointed out if a very good goalie plays in a season with a very weak draft class it's possible

If you have a good goalie scout that tells you this goalie will be the best player in the draft than you take him. For exemple, before the lockout year, many considered Gilbert Brule to be just as good as Sidney Crosby. Eventually, Crosby distanced himself, but when the Habs came to the podium calling the 5th pick, Brule was still available, and the Habs had a shortage of skilled forwards.

They took Price, and Brule fell to the Jackets. In retrospective, it was a great pick, and every Montreal fan is glad Gainey didn't scare away from drafting a G, especially since such a hot prospect like Brule was still available.

You should have seen the fans calling for Timmins' and Gainey's heads. Trust your scouts, is all.

Thats true, they had Theodore at that time as well and he was no slouch in 2005. Good thing they still picked up CP.

Regardless of where he is drafted, but how long til we see a 17 or 18 year old between the pipes for a team as the starting goalie at the beginning of the year right after their draft.
