Do You Like the Hockey Guy

I like him. For a guy who has three favorite teams, he does a good job of sounding neutral and impartial a lot of the time. His knowledge is very good compared to casual fans and people who don't know that much about hockey. I don't think he's necessarily any more knowledgeable or insightful than some really good posters on this site, but he has a good general grasp on the history of the NHL and the present day League and he's regularly putting out content in a way that's digestible. .

He's alright but he subscribes to some loony hockey thoughts, such as thinking no era adjustment is necessary from the high scoring seasons of 3.5-4.0 GPG relative to eras where it was more like 2.6-2.7. Of course if you asked him if defensemen and goalies just happened to suck back in the high scoring eras he'll say no to that too. IMO something's gotta give here.

I was going to say something like this in my post, but I wasn't sure what his stance is on era adjustments. In his career videos and season recaps, he doesn't make any attempts to account for changes in League-wide scoring. I think I've heard him mention era adjustment; I do think he is familiar with the concept. But does he actively oppose it or does he believe that it really isn't that important?

There is a reason I said I'm not sure he's more knowledgeable or insightful than good posters on this site. Compared to the casual or average hockey fan, he has a wealth of knowledge. But compared to someone like, say, HockeyOutsider? THG isn't anything special.

I saw a lot of talk of him. Checked out a retired player video. It was shallow reading of the players hockey-ref page with no insight whatsoever. Doesn't even do the courtesy of reading a wikipedia entry about the player. Just a metric shit ton of shallow surface level regurgitation of counting stats and box scores.

I like him. He's not really what I would go for if I'm looking for opinion or in depth analysis because that's not what he does. He has his cute little whiteboard and kind of just sums up the facts of a given situation neatly and concisely. Offers his surface level thoughts at the end.

Plenty of places to get your hot takery if that's what you're after. I find it refreshing he just presents the pertinent info and leaves it there. Seems like a nice man who like many of us is an unabashed hockey nerd.

Yeah, I was chatting with him online about that years ago. Maybe 8 years ago? Maybe he's changed his mind since then, I dunno and I don't want to misrepresent him.

I was like seriously dude, you think Bobby Smith and Barry Pederson were putting up seasons to match Crosby/Malkin/Ovechkin? So like each season in the 80s and for half of the 90s, 8 to 20 players were better than the best players from 2008-2016? And that coincidentally turned off when league-wide scoring went down? So as the talent pool grew and became international, everyone just started to suck? He was like yeah. He honestly didn't see anything wrong with that.

BTW that's not to dump on him. Much of the hockey establishment goes on raw totals across eras with no context or adjustment.

Hes ok. I used to watch alot of his videos very early into his channels life (2017-2020), but he has not developed his craft in any significant way and it is stale for me.

I can read off the box scores of games, and the Hockey Reference pages for careers, teams, etc. myself.

I admire the guy’s passion, but he only states facts (stats, standings) and almost never expresses his opinion.

It’s like watching a weatherman on TV but for hockey.

That’s a great way to put it.

I don’t find his style very entertaining, but I like the guy for his passion and commitment. He’s out there doing the lord’s work to make hockey fans more knowledgeable, so I wish him the best.

He seems like a nice guy but he really offers nothing in his videos. Hockey YouTube is pretty barren. David St Louis has some really good ones on prospects but there’s really not many channels with actual insight.
