Do the Oilers make the playoffs this year?

Will they make it?

No. But losing to a bottom feeder like Chicago when the games mattered the most is certainly relevant. I think they’ll make the playoffs but they won’t get as easy a match up next year so I’m sceptical that they can win a series with their goal tending.

I posted concern over that matchup before it started. There was zero momentum for everyone after the break and we have a young team and Chicago had the Kane factor. Anyways yes we were favoured to win and didn’t. Obviously expectations where higher and would likely be higher heading into the season had we eliminated Chicago and made some post season noise

I don't think people are factoring in the Oiler adds for the full year are significant.

Yamamoto, Kahun, Barrie, Ennis, Turris, Puljujarvi were not on the Oilers roster for the first half of the season last year.

Nugent Hopkins also went from a guy trending for his usual 50-ish points to scoring at a 70-80 point clip, he's finally taking a step up in his development and Draisaitl went supernova on his own line.

Giordano's numbers fell off a cliff for Calgary last season too and he was not good in the playoffs again, maybe age is getting to him, dude is 37. If that's the case, then I don't think they are necessarily better than last year. Talbot was .919 for them last year, Markstrom was .918 for the Canucks.

The Leafs also got a lot slower in their bottom 6. Picked up a few over the hill guys with cement boots.

Markstrom/Talbot >>>>> Koskinen/Smith

I'm positive that the NHL had playoffs last year. I'm positive the Oil weren't there.

Wrong . The play ins were classified as the playoffs.

2020 NHL Forward Playoff Scoring Leaders

Funny Connor McDavid’s points against Chicago are listed in the playoffs stats . Better call an emergency meeting with the NHL and tell them they were wrong lmao .

Fans aren’t the smartest people on the block although the try and act like the are when they don’t like a team . Your take is what I like to call wrong along with anyone else that says the Oilers never made the playoffs. Fans don’t set the rules the NHL board of governors do . The deemed the play ins as the playoffs. End of story . There no argument to be made .

The Oilers lost in the playoff qualifying round. Ergo by any reasonable and logical interpretation of the NHL's own language they failed to qualify for the 1st round of the playoffs. The whole counting playoff stats NHL appeal to authority has big "BUT MOM SAID SO" energy.

The whole counting playoff stats NHL appeal to authority really just looks like another version of "BUT MOM SAID SO".

Really though Calgary got a pretty huge gift/break in getting to play the Jets with basically no Schiefle and Laine injured too. Basically got an unearned freebie bye round and a chance to work off rust from a 4 1/2 month break.

Just clarifying... You feel the oil made the playoffs last year?

Most likely missing the playoffs again. Lack of depth is what hurts them.

Looking at the Oilers roster, they may very well be even better offensively if that’s possible.

But you could argue they’re going to be worse defensively as well. Turris is an absolute train wreck in his own end. Barrie is also quite the adventure in his own end.

If Klefbom is out for the season, then the top pairing is Nurse/Bear and there’s a good argument that neither are actually top pairing.

So I think the Oilers will be carried by the offense to the playoffs, but couple what I said above with sketchy goaltending, I don’t envision them doing much in the playoffs.

Our Left D is Nurse, Jones and Russel. That is not very good.

I like what Holland did and he clearly has an eye on making us faster and with more offence. He succeeded there as we have awesome forward competition and will have legit NHL players in the pressbox this season when everyone is healthy.

But you're right, the D and goaltending are arguably worse than last year if Klef doesn't play.

I'm still hoping for a Larsson trade for a LD of similar value... would free up Bouchard as well.

Voted no because I believe Draisaitl is gonna come back down to earth a bit, I'm not overly confident in their goaltending, and their blueline looks pretty week without Klefbom.

Off course I could be wrong if Koskinen can continue to play the way he did this past season (a shorter schedule may help with that) and if a guy like Caleb Jones breaks out and contributes to the top 4.
