HIMYM is one of the most overrated TV shows of all time. It's right up there with Breaking Bad.

My friend forced me to sit down and watch an episode of BBT. Legitimately the most unfunny thing I have ever seen in my life. Like, I get a few chuckles out of Two And A Half Men every now and again...I didn't even smile during this whole episode. I was flabbergasted, actually.

For a sitcom, HIMYM had a few great seasons. However, the poor/illogical storytelling eventually caught up to the show. A lot of filler episodes, and they kind of wrote themselves into a corner.
The first one or two seasons of BBT weren't awful, until the characters started making drastic changes for inexplicable reasons. And that laugh track was absolutely grating, with Two Broke Girls being the only worse offender I can think of, with the laugh track playing after nearly every single line, regardless of it being a joke or not.
The biggest problem with these two shows, in my completely unsubstantiated opinion, is network interference. The higher-ups stop caring about making a good show, and care more about making a show with good ratings, which results in a general blandness, which is less appealing but appeals to a wider audience.
As far as people liking these shows, I used to be annoyed by it, but I don't really care anymore. They're neither high-brow humor nor intellectually-stimulating, but then again, neither is a lot of the stuff that I tend to watch.

I don't mind Big Bang Theory when my wife watches it. Has it's funny moments.

Love HIMYM. Regularly have it playing on Netflix as something I can have as either background noise or something to tune into for cheap laughs.
Hate Big Bang. Abnoxious overkill of the laugh track (like SPM said, only 2 Broke Girls is worse at this, not surprising since they're created by the same guy) while their "quirky" characters have lost their charm from the original seasons. Kaley Cuoco is hot though.

HIMYM was a bit interesting in that the cast and characters were around the same age as me when it was on the air.
Previous comedies like Friends and Seinfeld and Curb were hilarious but the issues didn't reflect my actual age at the time.

I am kinda shocked that BBT has gone on for 10 years. Hope it keeps going, the first few seasons may have been a bit funnier, but I do not think it is getting "stale" either.
