i am 33 with a ph. d in math, a closet that is dedicated only for board games, a reasonably modest collection of marvel comics, a bookcase solely dedicated to dungeons & dragons rule books (3.5 only, version 4 sucks. fite me irl if you disagree), and more action figures and collectibles from various sci-fi, fantasy things than is probably healthy

i don't find this show particularly funny, but i won't try to tell you what you should like. so long as you don't like things i find reprehensible, such as racism or homophobia.

but get back to me when you are an awkward social outcast who was a virgin until their mid 20's, pursuing things 98% of the population does not understand, while you have an equal loss of understanding of things most "normal" people talk about at the water cooler.

that is why the big bang theory is hilarious and has grown on me

Never watched How I Met Your Mother but I can comfortably say that Big Bang Theory is the least funny show I've ever seen in my life.

The earlier seasons of BBT are easy to watch chuckle comedy. As it progressed though it got pretty lazy with its own formula and even the occasional story shifts weren't enough to keep me interested. It also really wasn't that funny. And as a result the jokes aren't memorable...other than the episode Sheldon says "the mailman was right, *****es DO be crazy"

HIMYM isn't in the high tier of TV comedies as it's another chuckle comedy type show, but I feel it handles dramatic moments better than other shows of its type. There's a definite drop off in quality after season 5 and it really starts getting rough in season 7. But it's got some good memorable lines and moments so I don't think it's as bad as people like to say now. It was certainly dragged out longer than it needed to go, but I don't think it was a bad show. Especially for one that still utilized a laugh track.

It caters to ppl who fully understand most of the jokes and can relate, and it also caters to ppl who like low-denominator comedy, but the ppl in the middle wont like it

Not really. It's okay to watch a few minutes of if you trip over it channel surfing, but it's a stretch to sit through a whole episode.

That said, most TV shows are.

BBT I find horrible but HIMYM is a fairly decent show. Not top tier comedy by any means but definitely something you can have on TV in the background without getting on your nerves and maybe giving an occasional laugh. BBT would drive me mad.
