Do Avs still trade Rantanen if they know he ends up in Dallas?

It's funny how pre-trade discussions of Rantanen's value had Avs fans telling us all how great he was when not playing with McKinnon and how elite he was in his own right.

Now for some reason he is a product of McKinnon and Makar...what changed?
Because thats what we saw when MacKinnon was hurt and then he went to CAR and did nothing, so maybe it was true?

The rumor is they offered 8*$12M. He or his agent declined and wanted more so they shipped him out before he knew what hit him. Now this feel slike a spite move to go a rival especially if CAR did offer $13.5M, but I may be making that part up.
The rumor, eh?
Avs never offered anything starting with 12…
And Canes had a better offer than what he signed for, but only money-wise.

Bill James has said the Boston Red Sox have made some trades with other teams with the understanding the team won’t subsequently trade that player to the New York Yankees. To the best of his knowledge other teams have never gone back on their word.

If Colorado did this with Rantanen, do they limit it to just Dallas? What about Edmonton, Los Angeles and other western teams? Plus Carolina is under pressure to sign him (which didn’t happen) and they apparently decided not to trade him to Toronto because, like Colorado, get him out of their conference.

To me, a GM/owner should worry about his own team. KISS. Keep I Simple, Stupid

Except, the reason he didn’t go to the leafs is because Marner wouldn’t waive. Not due to some conference thing

They probably aren't thrilled with it, but they'd probably be a lot less thrilled if they had gotten futures instead of Necas.

Necas definitely eases that pain. I'm sure they aren't happy about it though either. Based on reports it sounds like several teams aren't happy about it

I think anyone pretending they're fine with it is completely wrong. Avs sent him out East for a reason

I think Toronto countered once Marner shot the first deal down, and that's when Carolina opted to switch their attention to Dallas.
You probably have more insight on all that. My point was that it wasn’t a conference thing why he didn’t end up in Toronto. Being an avs fan though it stings he landed where he did.

Well yeah, I'm sure when the Avs' GM first shipped him out, in a move that shocked damn near everyone, he didn't anticipate Mikko ending up with a division rival not even two months later.

Rantanen isn't that soft, is he? Did they have extensive negotiations? I thought the Avs just decided to go in a different direction rather than paying what he likely would ask for.

I'm sure they wanted a team friendly deal. I don't think either party did anything wrong. Rantanen now gets a chance to carve out a legacy independent of Mackinnon. And Colorado gets to focus on depth.

As an Edmonton fan though, I wish he stayed in the east (or went to Edmonton).

As a fan I 100% approve, regardless of where he ended up long term. I’m positive management is still happier with the makeup of this team than they were a week ago as well. We needed quality depth and acquired it. That would not have been possible with Rantanen still on the team. I wish Rantanen great personal success and nothing but the worst for the Dallas stars franchise should they face the Avs in the playoffs!

He doesn't have the track record to demand it. Plus, he's 2 years younger and a better fit for our system
It was interesting hearing MacKinnon kindof bash the Rantanen PP recently ((while giving it praise for past years). Basically said the RH Necas gives him more flexibility to be creative, where Rantanen just parked himself for the one timer.

If Avs are upset they could have easily prevented it by letting Canes negotiate an extension before the trade. I think they knew Ratanen's "team" was acting in bad faith.

Once you trade the asset, what happens after that with the asset is no longer any of your concern, whether you want it to be or not.
