Do Avs still trade Rantanen if they know he ends up in Dallas?

I think so, yes. The move got them two really good players directly that added to their depth.

The cap space and other pieces in the deal indirectly lead them to be able to get a few other much needed players as well.

They tried the top heavy thing for two playoffs, it did not work.

Now they are trying the depth thing.

Probably considering Rantanen has shown he's not a top 10 scorer without Mack while Necas has slotted into Rantanen's spot and done the same job.

I’d say yes also but not just as a deal between the two. I bet the Avs are laughing at Rantanen’s agent right now. That dude is fired.

I don’t think these things matter as much due to how hard player movement has become. At this point it’s really hard to eliminate options.

Stankoven isn’t a guy I’d want to put around MacKinnon like necas big body is.

I think you could ask the opposite question as well - does Mikko sign with the Avs if he knows he ends up in Dallas. He probably would have imo.

Avs are a much more balanced team today than they were 2 months ago. They look ready to contend again. Not sure they could accomplish this without trading him. I’ll say yes, they do the trade. Dallas doesn’t scare the Avs.

The team that baffles me with their decisions in all of this is Carolina.
One of the funniest things I think I've read on this site

No. We do not.

But the worst part? How do we not sign him for $12M, are you kidding me. Literally a superstar in this league and MacKinnon's right hand man.

You're telling me we couldn't do $12M for 8 years with the cap going up like crazy? I am so pissed.
Saw a post say the difference between pay with Texas having no income tax vs what Colorado offered him is 4.2mil over the 8 year term. That's pretty massive.

Yah, you lucky rats ;)

I'm so dissapointed. $12M I would've done in a heart beat, not even close.

They are talking about Rantanen driving this negotiation

His agent Andy Scott finally sat him down and said dude I negotiated for Draisaitl, he’re the difference between 7-8.

You’re not getting that AAV going to UFA and 7 years
So stick with the $12 range in 8 years and call it day

Backfired on rantanen
If rants really wanted to stay in Colorado he must be livid with his agent. Why didn't he say this when you let me insist on 14 to extend in Denver?

Dont love rantanen in the west but you have to beat the best anyways. But we might have squeezed out a better package maybe?

Dallas thinks they’re getting MacKinnon version of Rantanen, when in reality they’re getting the Aho version, possibly a worse version. Dallas’ best player might not be ready for playoffs and they may have just blew up their salary structure. He will help on the power play, for sure tho.
Rantanen’s metrics in Carolina were very strong even if it didn’t translate just yet to the score sheet. Even if he’s a 85-90 pt player in Dallas rather than a 100+ point player, it all works out.

Stars were already one of the scariest teams in the league. They just got a lot scarier. Colorado can’t be happy how this worked out.

The Avs filled out depth at every position, replaced mikko with Necas who has out produced him, and have the best defense man in the world and leading scorer in the league. Maybe you’re underestimating the avalanche because they look scary. You guys beat us with Georgiev. This is not the same team

I fully expect Rantanen to do well in Dallas, but he was not the same guy this year. Who knows what went on behind the scenes.

If Avs wouldn't go to $12 million I think they're gonna regret it when they're paying Necas at least $10 million and Rantanen is ripping it up on a divisional opponent.

It’s 12m in Texas dollars

In Colorado you gotta add like 12%. Yall had to offer 13.2 or whatever to match 12m Texas dollars.

The players care about the pay that goes into their accounts not the aav the league reports.

Isn’t it fun that the salary cap is actively preventing parity! Sure is. (I’m from MO and my state is about to go tax free so you’ll hear me complain about this exactly 0 times when we’re signing Marner this offseason)

He took less to sign with Dallas than he was offered in Colorado, that's gonna rub people raw.

Circumstances changed. If he had a do-over, I'm sure he'd have been more flexible with Colorado. At the time, he thought he'd put up another 100+ season and come back to the negotiating table in a position of power. Colorado surprised everyone by not waiting for that to happen. Rantanen needed a wake up call on the value of that 8th year for a team that he actually wants to be on, and he didn't get that until he was traded. It is what it is.
