Player Discussion: Dmitri Voronkov

OK, so Dima has played two NHL games. Anyone think he is ready for the NHL and an impact on the ice?
I don’t think he looks out of place but I also don’t think he’s done anything to warrant a spot in the lineup, or even a roster spot, over a few of the guys we already have.

I certainly wouldn’t play him over Marchenko or KJ.

He barely plays so it’s hard to even gauge his abilities. All he does is some grind and then stand in front of a goalie on PP2.

He can also fight if needed

Afterward, head coach Pascal Vincent was effusive in his praise of Voronkov, both for his play and the way he’s been able to adapt to the game.

“That guy is really impressive,” Vincent said. “The way he plays the game and the way he’s able to execute the system without speaking the language, it’s really, really impressive. He does a lot of things that probably we don’t see when it’s live, but when we watch the video, it’s quite impressive.”

I honestly fail to see a lot of positive signs in the Jackets team play right now and I'm pissed about how nearly everything has been managed but if I focus on the bright spots I immediately think of Voronkov, among couple others. I didn't expect him to be this effective after seeing his preseason play and the first few regular season games.

I like his physicality, intimidating presence and net front impact. I think one underappreciated side of his offensive game is his vision. He's been very good at identifying passing seams for the 3rd and 4th guys on the rush, and without puck getting open for linemates Marchenko and Fantilli. Yes, sometimes his passes have been off and his shot's a muffin but to me he's shown he's a good connector and processor, I'd say quicker than Jenner, Sillinger, Kuraly or Olivier.

Hopefully he continues to improve his skating so that he could become actually helpful on the forecheck. I think there's potential to be more than just a bottom-6 plug when this team is ready to compete.

He's been one of my favorite players this season along with Marchenko, Texier, Danforth and Provorov.

I’d say that line is the biggest positive right now and hopefully they let them grow together

Gotta hand it to the fans, picking Voronkov to be the #4 prospect before season started shows some good foresight on him by majority

His combo of size/toughness and legit skill is something else. Not many (if any) comparable players in the entire current NHL. He’s actually VERY good with the puck and reading plays and making decisions on the ice. His ability and IMPACT around the net is an extremely unique asset that will contribute significantly towards him and his linemates statistically and the team overall. Unlike many current CBJ players, he makes the players around him better.

If only he could skate though, eh?

Seriously though, as his head and legs adapt to NHL speed, he will only get better. I also think it’s only a matter of time before we see him at C, where I think he would look good at. Or on Jenner’s wing.

I wonder if they will keep him on the wing but maybe have him take some more faceoffs as we move forward. He can provide valuable support to our top 6 so I dont think Id be in a rush to get him away from Fantilli and Marchenko. The offense will dip but the impact will remain. Maybe he'll get some PP1 time eventually

Would be extremely short sighted of him to leave now once he's shown he can play, and excel, in the best league in the world. I get moving to a new country/culture/language can be daunting, but he's got like five teammates that speak Russian (probably the most on an NHL team) and that could help him learn some English.

Before that tweet gains any traction, the article it’s based off of not only fails to offer any real indication he’s wanting out, but specifically ends by saying it seems super unlikely LOL. I had to translate it but it basically is a big piece about how AK Bars sucks without him and he’s the only cure, with small points that he A. doesn’t speak english(obviously), B. Doesn’t like America (speculation?? Mentioned before talking about a source) and C. a source saying he keeps in contact with the club (texting with old friends??). It’s overall a big nothing

Sounds like bs. Also, I'm pretty sure his European assignment clause can't be used while he's an active NHL player.

Yeah I should have noted that myself.

To me it seems like a kid with cold feet/homesick, like when you went away from college and you’d tell your parents you want to come home. Some people ended up going home, but some ended up staying and getting through the homesickness. I hope Voronkov stays, and I hope wherever marchenko went to learn English is where Dmitri goes

Don't worry, this is an article site from Tatarstan, where Ak Bars is an idol and is currently in trouble.
Dima definitely has problems, but, in my opinion, it's more to do with language.
