Division III started today in Izmit, Turkey. In the tournament opener last year from Div IIB relegated Belgium faced Mexico. Belgium was clear favourite to win the game but despite outshooting the Mexicans 54-17 and 13 power play chances, the final score was 4-0 for Belgium.

Meanwhile in Division IIB, Iceland is humiliating China. Score is 6-0 after 2nd period the shots are for Iceland 42-6.

Clear 8-1 win for Iceland. Total shots 55-19 and PIMs 26-36 and each of them were minor penalties.

Next game in Division III is South Africa-New Zealand. Those teams faced two years ago in U18 WC and then New Zealand stormed over the South Africans 18-0. South Africa is making their first appeareance in U20 age group since 2008 and back then the results were pretty one sided.

New Zealand U20 league has been running since this season from September to December in order to prepare the players better for the World Championships. That should be a great advantage so I assume it's gonna be a blowout.
 
Pretty easy and convincing victory for New Zealand over South Africa with the final score 6-0. SOG 37-12 and PIM 16-10.

Notable player from New Zealand is Shaun Harrison who scored 1+3 today. He should be one their most dominant forwards of the tournament just like he has been in New Zealand U20 league.
 
In Div IIB Korea was having some trouble against Serbia when Serbia tied the game 2-2 in early 2rd period. Serbian penalties later in the period helped Korea to skate away with two goals on 5-3 and 5-4 power play. That wasn't enough and Korea scored 4 goals in 2 minutes to take away this game 6-2. Korea scored 4 goals on PP.

The drunk Bulgarian head coach Martin Milanov isn't convincing me at all. Add that to home advantage, I was assuming we might see an upset here despite Bulgaria should be a bit more talented team. Very nice job to be a score sheet keeper. Thanks dudes :cry:

Belgium-New Zealand will be very tough one. I really hope New Zealand could pull the upset here. If there will be some penalties for Bulgarian players, Mexico could take a win of this.

Turkey had a strong effort today and they should beat South Africa.
 
Tough loss for Serbia against South Korea. The game was tied at 2-2 with 7:08 left on the clock.

Btw, it's really sad that a lot of teams in the Division III are missing their best players. I don't know the reason behind this, possibly that their clubs aren't letting them go or that the players themselves are not interested, but a star like Bryan Henry is missing for Belgium, or someone like Ivan Hodulov for Bulgaria, among many others.

If the club is in an IIHF-affiliated league (which is nearly every one but the NHL), they are required to make players available for national teams. Now if the player wants to play or not is a totally different question.

It appears Bryan Henry turned down the invitation, and I imagine the reason is the same for the other absentees. :(
 
Bulgaria with 4 game misconducts, does that mean that they're all automatically suspended for today's game against mexico?
Could be another tough game for them as it seems..

As they were game misconduct penalties, not match penalties, there won't be automatic suspensions but the directorate will investigate the incidents and if they give any penalties, I assume it's max 1 game and not necessarily to all of them who were involved.

In the first game today Belgium won New Zealand 4-1. New Zealand took the lead in 1st period but two goals in late period turned the game. Especially the 2-1 goal at 19.59 must have hurt.

New Zealand was down to 5-3 situation at 19.56 and the Belgians managed to score during the same period and also in early 2nd period.

Belgium were struggling with their PP against Mexico but today their power play units managed to score 3 goals with the man advantage.

Yet again Aaron Henderson and Shaun Harrison were responsible for the goal of New Zealand.

After tight two periods Mexico was ahead of Bulgaria only 2-0 but in the 3rd the Mexicans could take advantage of tired Bulgaria which played with only 3 full lines due to suspensions.

Final score 6-0. SOG 50-17, PIM 14-16.

Last game of today is the just begun Turkey-South Africa.

Expected win for the host Turkey over South Africa 4-1. Nothing to be ashamed by South Africans. SOG 22-21, PIM 12-18.

Turkey did the same trick as Belgium and succeeded to score a goal at the last second of 1st period.

Korea - China 16.30 GMT +1

Spain - Iceland 20.00 GMT +1

Korea-China will be a blowout but Serbia-Australia and Spain-Iceland will both be very tight. The bookies have Serbia and Spain as favourites but anything can happen. Odd for Australia is already 3.20 which sounds a bit too high so I might take a shot on that one. 2.06 for Spain is on a boarderline so I would wait for better lines at live betting. Spain should win it but Iceland hasn't played bad at all.

Treat it as a throw away game, rest Xia for tomorrow. Even though its very unlikely they win tomorrow, he gives them the best chance and even if he cant, he gets rest from the day off anyway before they need points against Serbia.
 
Spain seemed to take an easy win when they were ahead of Iceland already 4-0 in the 1st period and dominated the shots 20-11. In next period the roles were the opposite and the score was 5-4 and Iceland took the shots 21-7.

Spain managed to survive the attacks of Icelanders and scored reliefing 6-4 goal with less than minute to go in the 3rd.

Korea should beat Australia as Iceland should win Serbia. Spain should also kill China despite they will play their number 1 goalie unlike today against Korea.

In Division III Bulgaria, New Zealand and Belgium are the winner's choises on the bet slip :thumbu:
 
it's crazy how bad China is at hockey, even in comparison to Korea and Japan. lose 17-2 to Korea and 8-1 to Iceland?

you'd think in a country of 1 billion people they'd be able to find a couple kids pretty good at hockey like in basketball.
 
I see that every Spain games draws 2500 fans. Nice to see it, even in higher divisions (like D1A in Poland) there were not that many fans on host games.

The tournament is in Jaca which is one the most hockey fanatic towns in Spain. It's one of the few where ice hockey is more popular than football.

South Africa took a slightly suprising win over Bulgaria 3-2 in OT. In 2rd period South Africa tied the game and won the shots 11-1 but couldn't decide it in the regulation. If China is not doing great in Div IIB, you can say the same about Bulgaria in Division III.
 
As a Spaniard, I'm nervous for the game with Korea, who have been dominating the tournament so far.

I think it's safe to say the winner of Spain-Korea will get promotion.

Spain's been a little disappointing tbh.
