Not really. Regardless of how this plays out your statement wasn’t supported by anything. The US are second to the Netherlands in FIFA rankings, finished with more points in the group stage than Poland, had a better GD than Poland and Australia, are one of two teams in the tournament (the other being Brazil who have only played two games) not to concede a goal in the run of play. They’re also the only team along with the Netherlands not to lose in group play. There’s no measure that would support your assertion that the US is the worst of those four teams.

wc is a long tournament. every contender has to aim for the semis to be in top shape. that's why there are tough games in group stage for many teams that are capable of higher level.

both Netherlands and Argentina are better teams than US surely. you doubt this? and you support your doubts on what exactly?

the last team is another story. it will be hard to argue its better or worse than US after both will be eliminated.

bragging that you scored 1 goal against Iran isn't exactly that impressive in terms of WC playoffs

you can't win 0-0 in playoffs. you need to score then. hence my assessment

Goals For:

USA: 2
Poland: 2
Australia: 3

Goals Against:

USA: 1
Poland: 2
Australia: 4

USA are the only team of the 3 who haven't LOST a game, either. That's a requirement to advance as well....not losing.

Where did I say anything about Argentina? Where did I say they were the best team? You said the US was the worst team out of a group of the Netherlands, Australia, and Poland, which is wrong by any measure you want to use and by the eye test. You have nothing to support that assertion (other than your opinion, which of course is your prerogative) and now you’re moving the goal posts.

This really is much ado about nothing though. I think the US have been playing well, especially defensively and through the midfield, and it seems like you don’t agree. No big deal, moving on.

So Germany needs Spain to win, or win by 2 over Costa Rica and have Spain draw.
Feels like it could be a 3-0 Germany win. Costa Rica beat Japan with a 0.15 xG measure and they had a .07 xG measure against Spain. They’ve been getting run over so far and really should be sitting on 0 points.

Speaking of struggling to score, the Netherlands have been the second worst team in the tournament at creating chances.

I dont see US winning against Poland. They have very good goalie and top forward and can play defensive game even if parking a bus. That gives them solid chance in knockout against US in my mind. Is that unlikely to you?

And Ive stated there will be NL-AR quarter. Which is the most likely scenario. Should I consider I dont know what Im talking about? If US beats their opponent in 1/8 I will surely think so.

Maybe I was harsh about Australia being better than US. If they wont both play in 1/8 we will never know.

Im not moving any posts. Im playing the game all my life and understand it much much better than hockey. Always watching WCs one way or another. Sure, upsets are going happen, but Im confident US has little to no chance to win 2 games in a row against better opponents. For me its obvious.

Never rated Lukaku.

You can't expect Americans to have a realistic assessment of their team.

Im not high on this version of NL, and written about it. But its not like Id consider US better because of it. Thinking about your team highly and actually winning against NL in playoffs are different.

Btw, in our office betting Ive got a draw for Belgium and 2:1 for Morocco. My bets for the evening are 2:0 for both Spain and Germany :P

I was close on many bets in the group stage and got some results absolutely correct to a goal.

Maybe Im more attached to European teams (leagues) and undervalue ones like US which historically didnt win anything. I will believe in it when I see it you know.

:laugh::facepalm:

Ridiculous statement. No one is saying the US are the best team. This got started because I said they’re not the worst team out of Poland, Netherlands, and Australia and that those teams were a much more viable path to the semis than England who at the time we’re looking at a bracket with Senegal, France, and Argentina. This shouldn’t be that controversial.

You dared to suggest we weren’t the bottom of the barrel.

I think we would have a tossup chance against Australia, Poland a bit less, Netherlands even less.

Germany deserves to go out so I guess I'm rooting for Japan.
