They’ve really struggled to create offense as well, with their tune up match vs Qatar being the exception.

Keep an eye on Depay. He's been on limited minutes due to health but slowly building up. That affects their output for sure.

28, 45, then 68 min with 5 shots vs Qatar.

Better news?? Dude is a legend. Chelsea better put some respekt on his name.

He’s sick. We need him to win. Period

The worst news is they have to face Holland next.
Nah. Many are saying Senegal is the best team in that bracket. If they can play w England, they can play w Holland.

Every game is an uphill sled from here.

Sounds like the US

It’s weird. Depay is great and Netherlands has some impressive names up and down the lineup but they haven’t looked very good all tournament. Maybe they’re a sleeping giant or maybe they just are another version of this year’s Belgium — quality names with no chemistry and lacking an identity.

so I went and glanced into the future

for 1/4 I've got

NL vs AR
BR vs ES
FR vs EN
PT vs DE

I can see NL or AR not getting there but anyway I think that's 4th place pair most probably

both ES and BR is better than that upper part of the bracket

waiting for BR vs FR finals

that's two teams capable of solid defensive play and filled with good attackers. default favorites in any game.

DE... I think they can even get eliminated in group stage but have chances to go all the way to the semis. not the best version of them, but still can win a given game.

EN unfortunate to be in the same bracket with FR, but will be a hell of a fight probably

Maybe they should be able to catch the ball, run with it, and then throw it in the net also…? ;)
Good piece on the Weah offside. What about at least tweaking the rule from “you’re offside if any part of the head feet or body is past the ball and 2nd to last opponent” to “you’re NOT offside if any part of the head feet or body is NOT past the ball and 2nd last opponent”. Doesn’t materially affect the purposes of the offside rules and allows more scoring chances to survive.

I don’t want to get ahead of myself but as things stand right now, if Poland wins or draws today against Argentina, here is the US bracket for the knockout round…

US vs Netherlands, Poland vs Australia

One of those teams is going to the final four. Why the hell not us?

England’s bracket would look like this, woof!

England vs Senegal, France vs Argentina

Look don’t get me started on how frustrating offsides is and especially how it is handled with respect to VAR compared to how VAR is applied normally for a penalty as an example where the threshold is supposed to be a clear and obvious error.

I’m fine with the idea of if any part is on sides than you are on sides, like hockey. I’m good with a tie goes to the runner approach. I want VAR to use the same threshold as everything else and instruct the linesmen to be lenient with the flag. If you need 5 different views and some line drawn to show microscopic differences then it isn’t clear and obvious.

And the concept of enforcing offsides at a minute level across long distances, whether because the players are all the way across the field from the linesman, the pass is made from a long way away (how does someone watch a line of players and determine when exactly a pass is made 60 yards away at the same time? It’s impossible), or both makes it stupid to even try IMO.

Accept that you are going to get some technically wrong but try to err on the side of more goals and goal scoring opportunities and get on with life IMO.

Wow, wasn't looking ahead but that's a workable path.

Got an interesting situation playing out in Group C. It looks like Mexico and Poland are currently tied in points, goal differential, and goals for if the current scores hold. They also drew in their matchup, so the next tiebreaker would be yellow/red cards. Don't know who's winning that tiebreaker right now!

Edit: If I'm not mistaken Mexico has 7 yellows, and Poland has 4. Poland would advance on fair play!

Mexico-Saudi Arabia kind of reminded me "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan".
I mean Saudi Arabia was going down, but not without one last parting shot:
"From hell's heart, I stab at thee!"

In 2018, Japan advanced to the 1/8 due to this tiebreaker.
Senegal had 2 (IIRC) more yellows than Japan

well, we will see very soon
Not really. Regardless of how this plays out your statement wasn’t supported by anything. The US are second to the Netherlands in FIFA rankings, finished with more points in the group stage than Poland, had a better GD than Poland and Australia, are one of two teams in the tournament (the other being Brazil who have only played two games) not to concede a goal in the run of play. They’re also the only team along with the Netherlands not to lose in group play. There’s no measure that would support your assertion that the US is the worst of those four teams.

Morocco just dumping on Canada who are going to finish group play with 0 wins and potentially the worst GD for any team. Toigh showing after talking a big game after topping CONCACAF during qualification.

Belgium must win or they’re out. If Belgium win then Croatia is out. All of this of course is barring a gigantic comeback from Mexico.
