Good piece on the Weah offside. What about at least tweaking the rule from “you’re offside if any part of the head feet or body is past the ball and 2nd to last opponent” to “you’re NOT offside if any part of the head feet or body is NOT past the ball and 2nd last opponent”. Doesn’t materially affect the purposes of the offside rules and allows more scoring chances to survive.
This is why Weah's goal was ruled out for offside despite some confusion over the decision in the World Cup Group B match

Look don’t get me started on how frustrating offsides is and especially how it is handled with respect to VAR compared to how VAR is applied normally for a penalty as an example where the threshold is supposed to be a clear and obvious error.
I’m fine with the idea of if any part is on sides than you are on sides, like hockey. I’m good with a tie goes to the runner approach. I want VAR to use the same threshold as everything else and instruct the linesmen to be lenient with the flag. If you need 5 different views and some line drawn to show microscopic differences then it isn’t clear and obvious.
And the concept of enforcing offsides at a minute level across long distances, whether because the players are all the way across the field from the linesman, the pass is made from a long way away (how does someone watch a line of players and determine when exactly a pass is made 60 yards away at the same time? It’s impossible), or both makes it stupid to even try IMO.
Accept that you are going to get some technically wrong but try to err on the side of more goals and goal scoring opportunities and get on with life IMO.
