Beginning to think offside in soccer is like the offside pass was in hockey: it invalidates more in-game play (that is usually exciting) than is necessary to prevent the harm it’s designed to address. Do we want players to just cherry-pick behind the D-line? I guess not (though I’m open to persuasion on that - and I don’t think that necessarily requires offside to be called on a ball launched after mid-field). But why do the O players have to wait until the ball is in the air? Why can’t they go, for instance, once their mate who makes the eventual pass to them gets the ball. That would seem to reduce offside trapping while still constraining cherry-picking.

No doubt I’m wrong, but why?
They can go, They just can’t be beyond the last defender when the pass is struck….

even worse now, they often get let the play continue (instead of instantly whistling it dead), only to see the ever present flag go up….

Yeah - I’m saying let the pass recipient beat the D guy before the pass is struck. If you beat him while the guy who eventually passes to you has the ball, that’s fine - even if it’s before the pass goes up

How do you officiate it? If guys are making runs constantly all over the field, and the ball is still being passed around "onside", it would be a pain in the ass for the assistants to try and keep track of who was onside when which guy had the ball.

Maybe I'm not explaining that well enough, though.

I also think changing the rule invalidates at least a century of strategy. Formations would necessarily change, techniques would change, and all of it probably not for the better. You'd have virtually no midfield play and just gangs of players f***ing around in the box waiting for a long ball from the other side after the previous long ball from the opponent failed.

Yes, buildup of play would be replaced by long ball services to guys hanging out near the goals….it would be bad….

@Ajax1995 could probably explain it eloquently if he could stop being sarcastic to poor Marcel for a minute Lol…;)

Predictions for tomorrow? I want to believe that the US can do it but they haven’t shown me a reason to have confidence in their ability to score. They’re sitting on 1.4 expected goals total through two games which is 26th out of the 32 teams in the World Cup and they’re average (tied for 14th) in chances created. You can’t expect to win if you can’t score and they just don’t have the scheme to create and finish chances inside the penalty area. They also haven’t threatened at all on set pieces which has long been a trademark of US Soccer.

Been saying this for years now but Berhalter has no idea how to create offense. He couldn’t do it in the Swedish league, he couldn’t do it in the MLS, he couldn’t do it in qualifying, and he can’t do it now. He has a ton of talent at his disposal but he’s never shown the ability to make adjustments to open up the offense.

To his credit the midfield has dominated and the back line has been really good (which he was able to do elsewhere in his career) but you can’t win if you can’t put the ball in the net. Please, please prove me wrong! I like this team too much for tomorrow to be it.

So what you described is Iran's win 0-0.

Correct. I think it's important that the US score early. The longer the game goes on with it being 0-0 the more Iran is going to sit back and the more the US will push forward which could open them to a counter. Taremi has scored five goals in the Champions League this year for Porto and is a really good player up top who will be tough to handle on the counter.

Somewhat ironically, Iran parked the bus and played a 5-4-1 against England and got eaten alive. They opened it up and played a more attacking style vs Wales and were pretty dominant. Maybe they'll be gun shy about playing a low block and will try to take the attack to the US.

High drama in Senegal-Ecuador. Ecuador equalized in the 68th minute then Senegal retook the lead in the 70th minute. Senegal needs to win to advance, Ecuador just needs to draw.

CCV in for Ream, Sargent in for Wright. No Jesus or Reyna because any time you can leave two of your fastest and most creative offensive players on the bench in a game when you have to score you have to do it.

Apprently they didn't even get a shot on goal in their first two games! (Something I heard over at one of the soccer forums).
Check my post up a little bit. They’re 26th out of 32 teams in expected goals scored and they’re 1.4 expected goals combined for both games. The talent will need to shine through in spite of their manager because he has no clue how to chances.
