It would be so soccer if we make the World Cup and go 0-0-3 and don’t advance

The terrible tackle against Bale by Zimmerman makes the game vs Iran harder by orders of magnitude. Iran is a team that prefers to play a low block and strike on the counter. They are poor in transition defensively and don’t want to be caught out of possession. Against the US knowing they only need a draw to advance they’re going to park everyone behind the ball and dare the US to do something they haven’t been able to do at all under Berhalter even going back to qualifying: beat an inferior opponent who will play ultra conservative and be content with a 0-0 draw away from US soil.

It’s really frustrating the position they’re in. They’ve been the better team for three out of four halves and have yet to concede a goal in the run of play but find themselves needing a win to advance when they should be sitting on at least four if not the full six points.

I’d potentially look at playing a 3-4-1-2 tomorrow and just throw numbers forward. Put Pulisic up top with Sargent and have Reyna play in behind them. Have Dest and Robinson play more of a wingback role to help with overlapping runs.

This team is too talented not to go to the group stage. I actually like their chances in the knockout round against either The Netherlands or Ecuador.

The biggest problem they have is they're mediocre up front, relying mainly on tactics, positioning, and slashing.
They're not especially tall and dangerous in the air, and they're not especially fast.

How many true breakaways have we seen?
How many US forwards have actually won a footrace vs an opposing back?
How many corners were wasted because nobody's dominant enough in the air to cause problems for the defense?

If they're going to beat some of these bus-parking teams they're going to have to do it with transition and set pieces, and they lack the personnel for it. Unless there's someone on the bench that fits the bill and we've seen GB is all about the pluggers.

I think they have enough talent and speed up front to be dangerous but they don’t have a true striker so Gregg should try playing with a false 9. Weah and Pulisic have plenty of pace to outrun defenders. Honestly I’m not sure there’s a striker anywhere that would have countered Maguire yesterday in the air… unfortunately for us he chose yesterday as the day to play the game of his life. If Maguire was even average the US almost certainly win yesterday.

As for set pieces, Reyna is their best choice to take the kicks. Kellen Acosta is a close second but he’s so far below the level of MMA and other potential subs that you can’t justify playing him just for his set piece skills. Miles Robinson is their best guy in the air so missing him hurts but McKinnie is dominant in the air as well. Not sure why he’s not being targeted more on set pieces.

This has been my issue with Berhalter all along. He refused to try new formations in qualifying and in friendlies. He’s very rigid in how he wants his teams to play which is not how you manage a national team. Berhalter has been fired from his previous jobs for not being able to create offense and we’re seeing him struggle similarly with the national team.

Argentina going to tighten up as this goes on….

I didn’t see that. We are average as F at Striker.

Belgium
2 legendary streaks will stop during this WC.

The title holder eliminated in the group stage (already done)
Mexico eliminated in the 1/8 (almost done)

What’s up with KdB being so miserable? Looked disinterested in the first game and then talked down on receiving the MotM award, gave an interview when he said they weren’t very good and didn’t have a realistic chance of winning the World Cup because they were too old, looked very unhappy pregame and was one of the few Belgium players not singing their national anthem, and generally has looked this game as if he’s being inconvenienced by being there. Strange to see him like this.

Also, Ziyech has been the best player on the field this game and Pulisic has been terrific as well. Wonder how Chelsea fans feel seeing their whipping boys outperform the golden children (Mount, Sterling).

I mean he just seems like he has no faith in his team to win the World Cup. Their guys are going downhill quickly so can't really blame him. They were really lucky to escape with a win against Canada who thoroughly dominated them (doubled them as xG was 1.06 - 2.13 ) and now they are losing to Morocco.

I just think it's weighing on him that he has never been able to step up enough to win either the CL or WC.

Ummm…feel nothing. Ziyech and team had no pressure….and I’m happy for England players underperforming on this stage.

Players and coaches covering their mouths on the field while they talk cracks me up. What a wonderful modern age we live in. You never know who’s watching.

Expell USA is trending.

Beginning to think offside in soccer is like the offside pass was in hockey: it invalidates more in-game play (that is usually exciting) than is necessary to prevent the harm it’s designed to address. Do we want players to just cherry-pick behind the D-line? I guess not (though I’m open to persuasion on that - and I don’t think that necessarily requires offside to be called on a ball launched after mid-field). But why do the O players have to wait until the ball is in the air? Why can’t they go, for instance, once their mate who makes the eventual pass to them gets the ball. That would seem to reduce offside trapping while still constraining cherry-picking.

No doubt I’m wrong, but why?
