When did woman;s soccer become a "thing"? Back in the 1980s and 1990s, no one gave a damn about women's soccer. And now all of sudden its selling out Wembley stadium.

Its all about marketing. ESPN and some other major media outlets (like Yahoo for example) are fully behind women's soccer, which means it is destined to succeed. If you put ESPN and those media outlets behind "backyard bobbing for apples" it would become a world-wide phenomenon with huge ratings. Marketing is everything.

So the question is then: why does ESPN support women's soccer? Because of the USWNT. They dominate the Women's World Cup and other international events. And NOTHING sells like nationalism. The US Men's Hockey team got huge ratings when they were they good and competitive. And lets not forget the US Mens "Dream Team" Basketball team, who smashed the competition at the Olympics and were a ratings gold mine. ESPN loves nationalism.

So why am I whining about it? I dunno, I feel women's soccer somehow detracts from the men game. It cheapens the men's World Cup, which has a real history and pedigree.

But it doesn't matter what I think. So long as the US woman keep dominating, ESPN will continue to support them, which means women soccer will keep growing and growing. Ah well. Hopefully it will persuade more hotties like Alex Morgan to take up the game. Thats the only thing that makes women's soccer interesting to me, to be honest.
Hmm…odd position. How will you feel about the tradition of the World Cup when it switches to every 2 years?

Or the number of teams expanding in subsequent cycles

Seriously can't see why people can't just be happy for women. Always whining about rapinoe and Alex Morgan and game quality.

I'm also extremely biased as I've followed women's soccer very closely for over a decade.

Also that narrative is not true. In the 90s the US won the women's world cup. Over 91k packed the rose bowl to see us beat China in a shootout.

Yeah because of heavy marketing. I just explained the process in my original post: ESPN loves nationalism, US Womens Soccer was an opportunity to exploit that nationalism, hence ESPN and the other media outlets got behind the USWNT with all their marketing power, hence the 91k lemmings packing the Rose Bowl.

I really don't have a problem with womens soccer, I just like to see more babes like Alex Morgan and Hope Solo, and less Megan Rapinoes. Sexist? Yeah, so shoot me.

Big fan of slow motion soccer eh…?

I’m happy women’s soccer is growing in popularity. My daughters are big fans and I enjoy watching with them.

But more watchable? Not a chance.
Men's game full of diving and flopping for calls

Women get right back up

Overall maybe the men stay down longer because the refs take longer to pull out cards compared to the women's game. Is it because they know the men are faking so much, or because there's a kind of "shake it off, dude" mentality not there in the women's game when someone goes down? The refs definitely seem to call minor fouls a lot when women hit the turf.

That causes the men to overact and stay down longer, even calling for medics and stretchers just to get the call.

Both groups dive but the men will definitely dive more dramatically. Epic leaps and rolls like it's a separate sport. Women usually just go to ground and grab some body part. Then they get the call and pop back up.

Slower, sure, but I think people need to stop comparing the sports and acknowledge (and appreciate) that the games are played with subtle yet important differences. If you look at studies that compare the men and women, the number of events (shots, passes, crosses) in both games are nearly identical but women tend to move the ball more with longer passes and men tend to move the ball with shorter passes or dribbling. Women attempt more headers near the goal than men do, in part because men can shoot from distance with more power and accuracy so women have to rely more on strategy and tactics to get close to the goal. There are actually fewer fouls in the women’s game than in the men’s game.

It’s the same with women’s basketball, hockey, or lacrosse. The games are the same but they’re played pretty differently across genders, especially at the highest levels.

To me that's shoulder. The front view shows it more clearly. The back view appears insidious because you can't actually see the limit of the contact.

That's high bicep to me. Regardless, inadvertent or not, it stopped a goal. That's a red in the EPL.

The only reason it's even being discussed is because it was suggested the Women's game was a better watch....

I watch some women's PL and a decent amount of key international matches. It's fine, but in no way as entertaining IMO. You just have to be able to appreciate the level of talent among their peers, instead of against men.

Just blew it up and watched it over and over and I think you're right about the bicep after it hit the chest right around the 3 Lions crest, a bit closer to the armpit on the pect. Watching over and over on loop you can kind of see that initial contact and then maybe a slight redirect in phase with the motion of the arm.

Not sure if it matters but the initial deflection looks like it was sending the ball to the side and off-goal anyway, but the slight graze of the upper arm moved it a little more. Probably no difference in the call.

Germany may have a gripe here.

Agreed. There is a reason U17 boys teams routinely beat the top women’s national teams, including ours, and U19 mens teams destroy them.

I’m happy to watch the women’s game for what it is but it is definitely slower, less technical, and lacks tactical awareness. But I’ll agree there is better overall sportsmanship.

And that's fine with me, doesn't mean you can't enjoy both

Plus the biggest benefit to watching is that USWNT actually wins world cups, something the USMNT hast yet to do. USWNT has a huge advantage over the world (but the gap is closing, England may give em a run for theri money) due to Title IX.

Just launched on Prime. Haven't watched yet.

Halfway through episode one.

This is really behind the scenes from a tumultuous season.

A lot of Ted Lasso is true to form, though production and editing may be part of the illusion, still the interaction of owner/players texting about little things and the squad dynamics etc suggest more truth there than fiction.

Can't wait to see the locker room chaos and whatnot surrounding Auba's exit and so forth.

edit: very well done. watched the first 3. next batch in a week then 3 more a week later. Arteta has it.
