Digital ads on boards replacing traditional ads

I was watching the Habs-Caps game tonight and those idiotic CGI ads kept glitching, partially erasing players from the screen and whatnot. Thankfully, they removed them at some point before the end of the first period and they never came back.

Not a very good look when the technology you use is so shitty and unstable TV networks just say **** it and ditch the whole thing midgame.
Yeah, what an amateurish mess. Reminds me of websites in the 1990s, when programmers thought flashing lights and floating gizmos were cool! Took a few years for the internet to go through puberty and realize those visual gimmicks were annoying and useless. Let's hope the nerds behind digital board ads figure out how to use this new medium.

You know in 20 year we will watch superimposed player and coach.

Just one last step removed from hockey losing its last bit of soul.

Can't wait for this guy to get behind the bench!

The transitions can be a distracting sometimes but when they are static, I'm enjoying the added white space. The digital boards look alot cleaner than the actual boards.

No other sport is this bad with the advertisements during live play. NHL is the worst and the next closest sport isn't even close.

Football (soccer) also has transitional on the sidelines. I can't recall if they are digital or not, but they have quite a few dynamic images during the game.

I guess the key difference here is that the nhl ads are technically in play, whereas the football ads are out of bounds.

So naturally, the hockey ones will be more distracting. I do remember the kings doing something like this with rolling ads in a certain part of the boards during play when they played in Inglewood, but it was a very small portion of the boards, so not as distracting as we see now.

Dude, we have had ads on boards in Finland as long as i can remember, but wtf is this absolute bullshit? Just f***ing put ads on the boards instead of this nonsense.

Advertisers just flexing on us for real. I always laugh when people say they’re gonna boycott their products. They’re shitting on us and the things we love and they get off on the fact that you can’t escape them. It’s a sick victory lap these corporations are gonna take out on people.

Technology is getting out of hand when it comes to this, like why would you have moving and changing ads during a game like hockey where all we’re following on the screen is the contrast of puck and ice? I don’t even wanna get used to watching this shit, this is what turns people into bots.

Things will have to get a lot worse before anything meaningful changes. Mostly well off people don’t rock the boat.

The technology just isn't there. There is A LOT of glitching. Almost every board battle you can see parts of players disappearing into the boards, strange artifacts around them etc.

I'm actually someone who thinks the complaints about a helmet ad or jersey ad are way overblown, but these animated boards are a huge issue that should never have been implemented like this without proper testing first.

They won't go away at this point. However, maybe a compromise can be made where the boards aren't transitioning while the play is going on.

It's just going to make it harder to follow the puck on TV, even as a seasoned viewer, let alone the new viewer that the nhl is so desperately trying to tap into.

It's not even just the transitions. There's clearly artifacting and "shimmering" around players along the boards. It's sometimes similar to when you use one of those background filters on a zoom meeting. The tech just isn't there to handle it quite as perfectly as it needs to be.

Listen up capitalist slaves, do not resist and continue to BUY, BUY, BUY.
