To the OP's question, Price was never able to fully earn his contract, due to injuries. You could understand why he got the deal – he had been one of the most dominant goalies in the league for 7/8 years. Unfortunately, by the time he signed it he was missing more and more games.

He still remained dominant in the playoffs until the end, and you could argue those results made everything else worthwhile. Plus, he was on LTR.

Great goalie.........the team during his tenure had ONE 80 pt player. The question maybe should be did Bergevin earn his contract during Price's tenure.??

Too many injuries after being rode like a mule.........so the answer is no, he had no way to earn his $$$ because of usage and injuries.

Contracts don't appear out of thin air. I posted the context leading up to Price's contract. This should be obvious to anyone.

Someday NHL GMs will learn to give players contracts based on what they will do during that contract, and not for rewarding them based on the play of their previous contract. Everyone knew giving Price that much money for that much term would end up being a disaster and it was. Just like Shesterkin in NYR.

However, I’m unclear what other posters are suggesting. Should the habs not have signed him and let him walk or is the assumption that they could have signed him cheaper/shorter? Based on the stats leading up to the contract that seems unlikely.

I think at some point it's more about market value. It was obvious that the Price contract was going to be exceptionally difficult to be fully lived up to over it's 8 year span, but at that point we were talking about a league MVP winning player who has been carrying a team on his back. Basically one of the most feared players you could go up against in a playoff series. Even a totally broken down Price against the leafs showed that. So to the OPs question I think the answer is an obvious no.

But what was he worth? 9 million? 8? At that point almost any team in the league without an elite goalie would match that money and find a way to fit it in. Montreal was basically forced to give him whatever he wanted at this point. It's just one of the reasons having a goalie carry your team is a precarious position to be in.

Sure but it doesn't take place in a vacuum. You have to keep the fans and players happy. They would have been furious if he was traded or let walk as a UFA. Especially after what happened with Roy.

7x top-10 Vézina placing, but ONLY 2x top-3 Vézina finishes.

He was paid like he was heads and shoulders above all other goalies in the league, while in reality he was probably the 4th or 5th best goalie post-lockout

IMO if you look at what goalies are tasked with achieving and the scarcity of those achievements, you'll find that consistent excellence is more scarce among goalies than a few great peak seasons.

For that kind of money you want consistently great performances and Carey Price did not achieve that.

Yes.

He was the first 10 mil player to win a playoff series and also the first 10 mil player to win multiple playoff series. He stole multiple playoff series over that timespan and when he was out of the lineup the cap hit didn’t affect the team. Led the club to its first finals in 30 years on a really bad club. Well worth the money.

Greatest goalie of a generation. The question is not whether carey ived up to Montreal. The question is whether Montreal lived up to Carey. Alex kovalevs 84 points in his first year were the only time in his entire career he had a ppg player on his team. With the exception of drafting Cole and trading for Nick (a fluke because they targeted Cody class) the past regime absolutely sucked at their jobs and let price down big time.

I look at this in the context of what lesson is there to learn. Does what happened inform GMs to avoid what Montreal suffered through? The answer is no. You pay up for elite talent. Sometimes bad luck happens. Price carried no cap hit while injured and the deal likely was insured to boot.

Elite players are still getting paid, and it's not a bad thing. No GM has come out and said they are parting with their elite player because they want to spread out their cap space more and limit injury risk

Obviously, the answer is to give all players a base salary and then top up based on the seasons performance at the conclusion of the season.
