Oh I agree, I don't think it would be a problem at all. But used it to address the "if top picks turn out as 3rd liners it's a massive fail" argument.
Lol if you think it’s fine that a player taken 2nd overall ends up on your third line or even worse your former #1 pick from a few years ago ends up on your third line well then I dunno what to tell you.

The devils need talent no one should be off the table for this draft because we have this guy or that guy. So just discounting for example Cooley because we have jack and Nico is really stupid. So we take this winger because we have two centers and Cooley goes on to be a legit top line center while this winger ends up being a 20 goal scorer is going to he infuriating and can already see the “we had nico and jack” excuses. Same goes for d just because we have Luke or Hamilton or whoever else doesn’t mean you avoid drafting the best possible player. You can always trade the player they are replacing for need

That’s is what I mean whoever they draft has to end up being better then whoever they realistically leave on the board. I already mentioned as much in the past with Nico and makar
Yea but the thing is you are making up and arguing against a situation that doesn't exist. If we were stacked at wing and RHD, the rankings would still look about the same, if we were in desperate need of a C and Slaf was ranked number 2, I would hope you would be arguing the same thing in reverse. "You take the wing because he will be the best, not Cooley just because we have no centers." Then it would actually make sense.

It's a convenient coincidence that there are 3 guys we can choose from who could all realistically go #2 that also fill a need.

You seem to be under the assumption that all this Slaf/RHDs talk is solely based off needing those things, and not because they are potential star players projected to go in the spot we are selecting.

I’m ok if the Devils run 3 centers who are all talented enough to be on the first line and all play about 20 minutes a night.

Especially during the time when one of them is on their ELC.

Good God

No, we'd be taking a winger because he's better than Cooley and the two defensemen. Simple concept.

And if they're on the same level as Slaf, then you still go Slaf because he fits a need more than the other two.
No player is going to be equal. They are going to make the choice on who is going to they think have a better career. So even if we “need” a winger if they think Cooley will be the better player they will draft him. Again I’m sure it will be lost on many but I’m using Cooley as an example. But your type of thinking is perfectly fine with leaving talent on the board just because we have a need somewhere. To me that’s wrong.

I'm not discounting Cooley because he's a center, I'm discounting him because he hasn't proven he's the best player on his own team, much less better than Slafkovsky. How many points would Slafkovsky have scored if he were playing on the US-NTDP this year?

Slafkovsky is a threat to go #1 overall. Cooley is not. The idea that the Devils should all the sudden consider Cooley at #2 over Slafkovsky (if Montreal does not take him) is almost absurd -- "let's take the player who is not as good who plays a style we need less at a position we need less".

Slafkovsky was the best player in the Olympics, period. So far in the WC, he's on the short list for most impressive players in the tournament. He's got the most pure upside of any player in the draft. He's a perfect compliment for either Jack Hughes or Nico Hischier. The only reason the Devils should not take him at #2 is because Montreal takes him at #1.

I think it's fine if it works out that way through being best for the team and rolling 4 lines like a contender. I think three centers who could be top 6 on most teams, playing for our team is fine. I think using context is fine when considering what is and isn't a "massive fail."

But by the rules you laid out, no context allowed, if we pick a center we fail be default, if you think that is fine, I dunno what to tell you.

I don’t care who they draft as long as it ends up being the best player they could’ve. I just don’t want to see them draft someone because we already have this or that and leave a better player out there. That’s all I’m saying and if that happens I really don’t want to hear in here “well what did you expect”?

I actually agree with this for the most part.

I don’t think just trading the player is as easy as you make it sound. But yes it can be figured out after and is a good problem to have.

At this point though Slafkovsky looks like the BPA if Wright goes first. If the Devils scouts sit there and are confident that Cooley is better than yes they should take him but that’s seeming less and less likely.
At this point, Slafkovsky might look like the BPA, period.

For me, it's razor thin right now between Wright and Slafkovsky at the top. Then it's razor thin again for me between Jiricek/Nemec at 3/4 and razor thin again between Nazar/Cooley at 5/6. It's an interesting draft, for sure. But I can't see any way the Devils pass on Slafkovsky if he's still there at #2, anymore.

Jordan Staal was a 2nd overall pick and played on the 3rd line behind Crosby and Malkin at centre if I remember correctly. That's not an indicative on Staal, who could've been a first line, top-6 centre on most teams. Pittsburgh's centre depth made it that way, it wasn't truly an indicative of Staal.

Better. Hughes will be far superior to Seguin.
They both had very similar starts - Seguin NEVER hit a Pts/60 rate of 3.5 that Jack did this year so maybe you're right - But I personally think they are similar.

Seguin also played for a much, much better team...Jack had an explosion of a year production-wise but the first two years were so bad it sort of evened out.

Seguin did hit 3.3 Pts/60 in back to back years in his 4th and 5th year.

Seguin was was much better defensively in his first 3 years than Jack has been - Seguin even garnered a few 5th place votes for Selke in his first two seasons.

Yea, and by most accounts that will be Slaf, or possibly one of the RHDs. Whether we need them or not is irrelevant, even going by what you are saying over and over, Cooley should still not be brought up. That's the point you seem to keep glossing over to stand on this rock.

I mean Cooley is seemingly ranked higher than both of the RD.

If you take Slaf, you're not leaving talent on the board if he's better (and he is) than what is available. You're creating arguments that simply don't exist.

I'm totally with you here.

I'll debate all day over who is better, Cooley or Nazar. They're both terrific prospects who performed nearly identically well on the same team. But the idea that either of these players should be going top 2 in this draft is a bit silly.

If the Devils scouts decide Cooley is a better prospect than Slafkovsky at this point, then the Devils need new scouts.

Cooley could very well end up being the better overall player but the Devil's should definitely take Slavkovsky over Cooley. I think the points maybe don't show it, but Cooley I think is the far superior player to Nazar for example. His game I think is much more projectable to the next level. Cooley won't bust, Nazar has a decent chance to bust

Montreal would be crazy to pass on wright. Fitz would run right up to the podium so fast. Down the middle you have Hischier Hughes and Wright. If wright surpasses (probably Nico) then you drop Nico to third line center and be a very deep team.

As for Cooley, he looked great in the world juniors. He is a skilled playmaking dynamic but small forward and we have enough of that. Like fitz said we have too much of the same kind of players.

Pretty cool slavkovsky interview in English. Mentioned how his favourite team is Toronto because of Auston Matthews. Also said how he is ok with not making the jump right away to the nhl next year and working on his game. He seems like a really humble kid. I apologize if this was already posted earlier

The Phoenix Suns just got eliminated in an embarrassing game 7 against the Dallas Mavericks last niggt

Why do I mention that?

Because the Suns had the 1st overall in 2018 and took a player by the name of Deandre Ayton. Three picks later another player by the name of Luka Doncic went to the Hawks (traded to Mavs).

The reason the Suns went for Ayton over now-megastar Doncic? 'We needed size in the lineup and Ayton was the man for us'.

Now of course the NBA isnt the NHL but I use this as an example of what misery we could possibly live with if we took Slafkovsky for his size and then one of the others in Cooley Nemec Jiricek etc. become a megastar and we kick ourselves.

And just for the record I am a fan of taking Slafkovsky. But I dont think referencing his size and Fitzgerald's willingness to beefen up the offense is a good idea nor should have anything to do with the pick.
