And many wouldn't. To suggest that it was a nepotism pick is just being recalcitrant. He is no worse a pick than Edvinsson from everything I've read. If nepotism was used as a tie breaker so be it. I don't see anyone saying anything but good things about Luke's play at Michigan. He was one of the youngest players in the NCAA and a Hobey Baker finalist. He apparently scored at a rate that set a record or two for something. What's Edvinsson done better? Score 2 goals "against men"? Meh. Maybe Edvinsson is better long term or maybe not, right now show me anyone specifically calling for Edvinsson to clearly go ahead of Hughes in a re-draft and I'll show you a Red Wings fan.
The Luke Hughes revisionism is silly and not worth responding to. In a 2021 re-draft, it's between Hughes and Power for 1st overall. If Hughes were born a couple weeks later, he'd be battling Shane Wright for #1 overall this year.

No way to be perfect at this, but I'd say this would be a 2021 re-draft at the top:

1 Power
2 Hughes
3 Beniers
4 McTavish
5 Edvinsson
6 Geunther
7 Sillinger
8 Johnson
9 Morrow
10 L'Heureux

Eklund's probably in the 11/12 range, and we should keep in mind how many people on here wanted him to be the Devils pick. But saying Edvinsson is better than Hughes right now is silly. Edvinsson had a very, very good year in the SHL, but Hughes may have had the best offensive campaign for a freshman defender in NCAA history.

The Devils have to be thrilled with the pick of Luke Hughes, and if this draft was done over again, NJ would have had no chance for him at #4. If the Devils made an easily identifiable mistake, it was not taking RD Scott Morrow at #29.

Hughes wasn’t going to win because he wasn’t close to being the league’s point leader (like Maker) nor did he didn’t have the intangibles/defense/role as team’s undisputed 1D (like Perunovich).

Butcher was only the 6th defenseman to win the Hobey Baker and his stats weren’t eye popping at all. He was the Captain on Denver, who won the NCAA Championship that year, and aren’t a high scoring team though.

It’s an award that takes a player’s whole college career into consideration, which is why the best college goalie performance in a long time from Devon Levi didn’t even get nominated while the goalie with the best college career in a while won (Dryden McKay). (It’s definitely fun that a goalie a won, that’s only happened twice and Ryan Miller was a god in 2001 when he was the last goalie to win.)

The easiest way for Hughes to win it next year is to score a shit ton of points. He doesn’t have to lead the league in scoring though, he can be helped by being seen as having grown as a player (stepping up to be Michigan’s 1D, a bigger role in special teams, improved defense).

Sure, if Hughes was a 24 year old senior scoring against 21 year old sophomores I'd get it and agree with you. In this case, you are talking about an 18 year old true Freshman. If he's a week younger he's in this year's draft. This past season was arguably equivalent to a draft minus one year. It's oversimplification to just say the Hobey Baker is meaningless because it typically goes to an older guy who is not a great NHL prospect. Again, show me something to suggest Hughes was not a good pick at four on his own merits. I'm open to anything on the issue. As an aside, I never saw Hughes as a risky pick. I posted several times before the draft (amazing how the contrarians typically can't point to their pre-draft posts making a point until after they get to use their 20/20 hindsight) where I suggested Hughes was likely a conservative safe pick. He had two very successful NHL bothers and he was bigger and stronger and possessed many of the same skills as the other two. I expected Hughes to go high because it was easy for an NHL GM to look at him and see at a minimum an NHL player. I expressed no real opinion on his upside, I leave it to @StevenToddIves or @Guadana to offer that since they spend hours researching and backing their opinions with video evidence, but their track records are valid in my view, and they both suggested he was an excellent prospect in his own right. Look, I get it, the team struggled this season and it's easy to be frustrated. That said, just saying it's all terrible and everything is bad is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Luke Hughes did nothing to downgrade his potential this season and if anything he probably exceeded expectations. Nobody has shown me anything that suggests otherwise. Now, I've watched him in college and my criticism is that he cheats towards offense because he can get away with it, he is that skilled and transcendent a skater. He will have to pick his spots against NHL competition. If that's the worst thing you can say about him he's doing pretty well as a teenager where he's playing against guys usually 2-5 years older than he is.
Even I - the man, who was BIG fan of Edvinssov(the biggest on the njdhfboards), cant say that we should pick Edvinsson over Hughes no matter what. Hughes is a great pick. Philosophically I like Edvinsson more, but I can't deny the coolness of Luke. And I really happy with the pick and with the prospect.

Why this conversation even exist in the moment of time? He has achieved excellent results for his age and level of competition.

Weird attempt to complain about Jack?

It’s some dude who used to post here saying there’s discontent. Like we didn’t know this re: Blackwood. And it’s not exactly a big deal if a few other disappointments and scrubinis want out. Nico, Jack and Hamilton are all signed long term so they aren’t going anywhere. Other than Bratt and maybe a couple other guys, there really aren’t many other people I care about if they’re happy or not, play better and help us win or GTFO

I’ll guess Zacha is among the malcontents. As you’ve noted, beyond Bratt, the other players are of secondary concern.

Hopefully the malcontents include Tatar Johnson and Zacha . They are more than welcome to leave . I want players that want to win and take it on themselves to try to win .Example - JT Miller last game was livid at a penalty call . They are eliminated from the playoffs and he knew do . Instead of just playing the games out on cruise control , he shows passion and the desire to win no matter what . Game 80 or whatever and he is still giving it everything he has and wants to win even in otherwise meaningless game . Those are the type of players I want on the Devils .

Using black and white film and lighting it so you expect nosferatu to come around a corner doesn’t make it art. I’m sorry. The premise was the cinematic equivalent of an Andy Kaufman bit from later in his career. Seeing how far you can push the audience by subtly insulting them is not creative. It’s just taking advantage of peOple who don’t know any better. He didn’t even get the myths correct. All that aside I could have fixed that movie with one change to the last scene. It wouldn’t have been great but at least it would have worked.
