McDavid needs to get hurt for that to hit.
My hope was the story line on Hughes breaking the Devils scoring records + getting the Devils back to the playoffs would win him votes that otherwise would go to McDavid for winning the scoring race (again).

The first part looks to be on track. McDavid had other ideas and decided to shatter his scoring record pace which throws a wrench in the whole thing.

Yeah it’s basically impossible to beat a guy putting up 150 pt pace and a near 70 goal pace. It might be the single most impressive season ever

Horvat trade kind of set the market, I'm going to assume Lou was able to talk to him / his agent beforehand to discuss the 8.5m x 8 deal. I'd go with 1st, Holtz, Mukhamadullin for Meier if we can get confirmation Meier would sign that deal as well. Then I'd try to get Bratt at 8.5m per also.

That should open up a cup window.

I don’t assume that at all.

Lou made a very big offer and Horvat took it.

It was public knowledge that the Canucks lowballed him.

Horvat might not have been that optimistic about how much he could make on the UFA market because you have to look at the potential buyers.

Several of the contenders who were reportedly interested in trading for him (Boston, Colorado) weren’t going to offer him anything like 8.5m if they could somehow even afford to sign him long term.

Carolina needs a center and has cap space. They’re also infamous for their internal cap and a generous offer to Horvat isn’t exactly their MO either.

Columbus needs a center but who knows if they have any interest on another big ticket item and/or how long the bottom feeding lasts.

Detroit is too busy with their staring contest with their own UFA center.

Lou has been dying to give a giant contract to a big UFA forward. They’re the only team that can give him an 8 year deal. (No one is going to want a sign & trade and Lou wasn’t flipping him.)

I don’t think you need collusion here. There was real risk here, Horvat could have been dead set on being a UFA (or against the NYI), but Lou traded for an excellent shot to sign him and it worked.

There’s a real chance his scoring takes an immediate hit when he’s not on a PP w/ Quinn and EP and playing on a team with more than a passing interest in defense (and winning).

So signing now made sense for him too.

His comment that having it settled was a relief and that it was weighing on him and his family was telling. It makes sense given that he met with Lou and signed the same day. It all fits. The money and the place were right for him, his wife and kids and they can settle down and are set financially for life.

I don't mean to imply Hughes is strictly a playmaker, just that there are reasons to put Sharangovich on his line aside from showcasing him for a trade.

I'm also not convinced he would be that attractive to San Jose in a trade for Meier. If I'm them, I'd rather try to pry a 1st, Holtz, and one of our D prospects than adding in Sharangovich. I guess he can be a top 6 winger for them while they rebuild, but I don't see him being a contributor for them by the time they are good again. Similar to a Palmieri type for us, but I think he's already older than Palmieri was when we traded for him.
Yep, agreed. I guess I phrased it poorly. I guess what I was trying to say is I'd like to see him showcased next to Hischier to see how it goes.

He doesn't need to. Just would be nice. I'd like to use the comparables signed by players in the summer, rather than the Horvat contract.

I think people get a little too in love with players and go with the "PAY THE MAN WHAT HE WANTS" mantra. And then predictably start ragging on him as overpaid when he doesn't take the next step. Just 20 years of forum psychology observation from me.

What I wrote in my previous posts was just the negotiation tactic I would take. Nothing wrong with at least trying to get him closer to 8 than closer to 9. Why is the Leafs comparison so bad? Yes, they screwed up the negotiation but my point is that if you pay your stars so much and have bad depth, you are fully dependent on those stars showing up and carrying the team in the playoffs.

I guess I was wrong about Bratt not being good defensively, as his GSVA per TheAthletic has him as pretty good this year. In years past, the knock on him in this forum was that he was a bit one-way and the team was certainly a tire fire defensively. But the advanced stats are pretty good to him this year.

My hope is that we become the Lightning or Bruins (not counting Zacha) where players will take slightly less to be part of something great.

The problem with the Leaf comparison is the Leafs’ big contracts have a specific context that has been pointed out many times before that you’re ignoring.

Go look up exactly when their top player signed and exactly for how much and what % of the the cap it is.

Then look at the recent history of NHL salary cap.

Note when it froze at 81.5m for 3 straight seasons and how it only has gone up to 81.5m this year after that.

If hughes can do 50 and 100 make the playoffs and mcdavid misses the playoffs it won’t matter what mcdavid puts up

I would very much like to have 3 of the top 10 in WAR

I've been burned by these advanced stats plenty of times before (including by members of this board that were arguing that the 2013-14 Devils were an elite team due to great CORSI and would be good the next year). Bratt should not have a substantially higher defensive WAR than Hischier.

Look, I don't want to go on a bender saying Bratt is not worth re-signing. If I had to pick between him and Meier, I would rather keep Bratt as he is homegrown. I would rather have Bratt than signing Johnny Hockey to his deal. Just saying that his agent is going to point to stats like this one to try to get 9M+ and I hope Fitz negotiates.
