He signed the top UFA on the market, traded a former first round pick, and traded three picks besides. He has gotten extremely lucky that Siegenthaler turned into what he has - he showed signs of being a reliable guy in limited minutes, but the idea that he would be on the top pairing of a playoff Devils team would've been dismissed by everyone two years ago - and he also got lucky that nobody besides the Devils were all that interested in Hamilton.

And he signed the big UFA D at the right time - Shero never committed to a big UFA D because right now we'd be staring at his awful contract on CapFriendly waiting for it to end.
Werent Siegenthalers advanced stats good in Washington?

It is lucky that he became a solid minute eater for us though! I thought hed be a bottom pair dman

DS connections were likely the people he knew overseas because that was the info he knew best, so it’s possible someone told him something. Whether it’s true or not, who knows.

wouldn’t that lower his value? if they knew he wanted to sign with us their best offer would be from us then, no? and they know we want him? this sounds like a no brainer

Has this been posted here and is it credible? I’ve seen people talk about Devilswede on here and I believe this is him.

If true, go figure when the Devils finally start getting top end talent to want to come here - it starts backfiring on us!!

I think SJ worry is that he will tell other teams he wants $10.5 million and ask for a reasonable number from the Devils; leaving the Devils as effectively the only bidder.

I sure hope thats the case! Great way to look at it

Not good for them that it leaked if what you say is what he ends up doing!

I think (forgot who) reported that timo would accept the 10.5 QO if traded to a non contender and if he were traded to a contender his asking price would be more reasonable

After thinking more about it that makes sense now!

But the price may rise if they dont allow agents, teams paying higher for a two year rental! Maybe? Idk could be a stretch

Whether they can officially talk or not, word finds it’s way around the league. Teams will unofficially know where they stand.

But couldnt this also mean Fitzgerald can jump the gun?

Im sure the players were in his ear after their vacation together (or at least near each other)!

If Fitz knows.. or has a 'feel'.. that Meier would sign, why wait?! Offer a big package now and play hard ball with a threat to lower it later on (this would work off the suspicions you speak of teams maybe having)

Do you think the Marino trade just arrived in the mail or something? It’s a great trade. (Just like Siegenthaler.)

Severson was our 1D and Hamilton in no way replaces him. Fitz said he spent 5 months working on that trade. That’s shows a lot foresight in sensing the need to move on from Severson and Marino was the perfect target.

Not every GM is willing to sell that early on prospects either, Fitz is very good there too. He’s pumped and dumped a bunch guys now.

I think it's a great trade, but it is much easier to sell high on prospects when you have a bunch more arriving. We were all hoping the Devils would move on from Smith, he was bad and Ruff was still here, but the Devils just didn't have a similar luxury with e.g. Pavel Zacha a few years back.

All of Fitz’s trades for defenseman are significantly better than every trade for defense that Shero made. (Maybe Ryan Murray wasn’t that exciting but what do you want for 5th.)

Is that dumb luck?

At some level, yes. The market has been far softer, COVID created some weird situations - is Siegenthaler sitting out every game for the Capitals in an 82 game season? Are the Penguins ditching Marino if the cap isn't flat? Both Shero and Fitz made a deal before the expansion draft, but it turns out that Vegas refused to deal with any team who made a trade before the draft, greatly reducing NJ's potential trade partners - there was no such thing happening with Seattle, who never made a deal with anybody. All of these are excellent trades, but there's some luck in there too.

The best guy Shero traded for was damaged goods due to injuries (Vats) as was the most expensive one (you know who).

Is that just bad luck?

I get that there were rumors that the Subban trade was “forced” on him but maybe if he had a better plan for the defense Shero could have avoided it.

Fitz isn’t perfect but I don’t know why he wouldn’t deserve some credit here.

Fitz deserves lots of credit. I just think he's also working from a much more stable situation than Shero walked into - the path forward is much more obvious.

So, say Canes offer Jarvis ( higher /better offer than us ) . So if Meier doesnt want to / wont extend with the Canes, then the Canes pull out of a trade then ? Or SJ won’t give permission to talk to Meiers agent as they know he will only extend in NJ? If that’s the case , I cant see any team offering a package better than the Devils. Would SJ be so spiteful or pissed off about the situation that they take a slightly lesser offer from another team besides us then ?
Is this seen as a good thing or a bad thing for us if it’s true ?

Logically, it makes sense. Why wouldn’t this be Timo’s preferred destination given the Swiss connections and the team’s contention window? I’ve been a bit skeptical that San Jose would actually let Meier negotiate a deal with a team once there’s an acceptable offer on the table as that puts a lot of control into Meier’s hands at that point and he can easily squash a deal by playing hardball on an extension or just outright refusing.

No clue if this is credible, though I do recall DS having some connections way in the past. Would certainly seem to favor NJ if that’s the case (and maybe the Sharks allow a team like the Devils negotiate an extension knowing there’s a good chance the two sides hammer something out).

Yes, on one of your other accounts you were very anti-Siegenthaler, you probably didn't even think he would be a bottom pair d-man.

I think the issue is more San Jose wants multiple bidders putting out big bids and are willing to wait to see if someone gets desperate and drives the price up

The piece of info that would really shed light on this is knowing what our current offer is. Have we offered our best and San Jose is balking? Are we willing to raise and it's a waiting game?
