I don’t think people realize how difficult it is to jump three spots when you’re 6 points back with just 12 games left. You need a scenario where all three teams they want to jump go .500 or worse for the remainder of the season AND the devils would need to win like 9 of their last 12. In gambling terms, it’s basically a four leg parlay. The odds are wildly slim and it would take a true miracle.

Well sometimes you just need to be believe

I bet 6 leg parlays often enough where you saying this is actually giving me more hope, thanks pal, I needed that.

If Detroit comes out of their next 6 games around .500 I think they will lock up the final Wild Card spot.

Detroit's last 6 games are Buffalo, Washington, Pittsburgh, Toronto and Montreal twice...4 of those games are against teams that have already packed it up.

So we are hoping for a lot of garbage time wins from a lot of teams to help us out.

Their best path is getting within 4 pts of Flyers by the time they play each other. Then there is a chance

I’d love to know what kind of six leg parlays you’re betting on.

This isn’t like betting that all the top two leaders in each division are going to make the playoffs. This is the equivalent of parlaying four bets where at least half of them are already long shots on their own. The odds are massively slim.

I have hit 10 leg parlays with soccer games in leagues I’ve never even heard of.

It's extremely unlikely that the Devils make the playoffs but it's nice to have a sweat and that's what they have now. If they can take 3 points out of the weekend they still have a sweat.

In 1988, the Devils were locked in a Patrick Division race with Pittsburgh and the Rangers, they dropped a game against Quebec (who missed the playoffs) and were 31-36-5 on March 17th, that's 67 points in 72 games, the Rangers were 32-32-8, 72 points in 72 games, and Pittsburgh was 30-32-9, 69 points in 71 games. So they were 5 points back and behind another team, and managed to go 7-0-1 to leapfrog both to make it there. Things like this have happened.

The first goal is getting within striking distance of Flyers by the time they play each other. At least a 4 pt gap. Then we can make them sweat in that matchup.

Very unlikely but I have seen some weirder stuff happen in sports

I had a 1984 blue Jeep Cherokee with a pull out Sony stereo and one key for the ignition and one key for the locks when that happened....The Monk"s Cellar on River Street in Paterson used to serve me back then when I was 17 and I would buy a six pack of Heineken and me and my buddy would go and hang out in the parking lot of the Bryne and wait until the games started so we could buy $26 dollar face value tickets for $5 from scalpers.

The entire lower bowl was $26 in 1988...it might of been 28 but my memory isn't as good as it once was.

I would suspect our chance of making the playoffs is higher than the chances of winning the division in January 2006 were. Odds of us making the playoffs are certainly higher than the odds of us winning the draft lottery 3 times in 9 seasons.

Unlikely things can happen, but we dug ourselves a VERY big hole. As the games remaining gets smaller, the effect size of each win and loss will become greater. I won't believe it until I see it, but it's nice to have something to look forward to. This fan base was ready to mutiny 2 weeks ago.

My Buffalo Bills went into the BYE week at 6-6 with a 4% chance to win the division and a 21% chance to make the playoffs. They did both. Not really relevant but I just wanted to remind all you Jets fans.

Do you remember what Elias did from January to the end of the season?

He should've won the MVP that year ...or something. It was the single most awe inspiring performance I have ever seen from any Devil.

How could I forget, that was when I first joined HFBoards. I remember going to NHL.com to pull up the radio feed so I could listen along with everyone else in the GDTs. John Hennessey and Randy Velischek, miss those guys.

Elias was a machine, he pretty much Superman'd the Rangers all by himself that first round.

I wish there were more (if any) highlights of it on YouTube. It's hard to find much of anything from that season before the Ranger series.

I do remember that night distinctly when we won the division, it was wild.

Realistically, Detroit can have a rough 7 gm stretch..... i can see 1-3 pts only attained..... biased mixed in with questionable objectivity.....
Det next 7:
@NAS
@Wsh ' we "dont lose" with a w/l here by DET imo
@car '
@FLA
@TB
v NYR
v Buff

Very possible to be shut out on that away game stretch...
