We may never truly know what happened behind the scenes...who's really talked or shown any inclination to talk about it? Lou? Vanderbeek? Parise? All we know are innuendos and crumbs that Brooks and others in the Post have dug out about how in trouble financially we were. Does that mean the Devils 'only' offered a 12-84 to Parise or worse (if anything)? It's hard to assume anything when that period is still so shrouded in mystery and innuendo.

Just like it's hard to assume anything about the Bratt negotiation because neither side is talking, but it's obvious from Fitz's other big deals that he wants Bratt to take a hometown discount and Bratt clearly isn't as willing to do it as some other people have been, especially being closer to FA than a Hughes or a Hischier.
If I had a dying father in Minnesota, and had grown up there, and they were offering one of my best buddies and all-star dman a contract, I don't know if monetary concerns would be chief on my list.

I thought that the personal reasons were a compelling narrative. The father thing being #1 as my own Dad gets up there and I'm far away.

The Atheltic did a really cool piece a few years back on how Suter and Parise ended up in Minnesota. Suter’s goal was to end up in Detriot while Parise had narrowed it down to Chicago and Pitt. The Wild kind of came in last minute to swoop both guys up.

The Hawks and Pens would combine to win four cups in the coming years after his free agency.
Then what was all the lip service about going back home to be close to his dad?

A few days ago, you sent me this: "Welcome to the NJ HFBoards section, new member. :sarcasm"

Today, you replied with this: "Welcome to the Board, btw, Mr. New-Guy-Whom-I've-never-seen-before-until-this-very-moment. ;)"

You're either trying to imply something, or you're just a little odd. You might also be confusing "an attempt at discussion" with "contrarianism". Who knows.
I do recall saying "Welcome" to a new member but I don't remember your particular username unless you changed it.... *shrugs*

You can't expect me to remember every new member here who comes out of nowhere just to insert himself into a conversation just to make a point.

I was concerned when we got to another last ditch one year deal, I never bought the fantasy he was signing after January 1 and I doubt he signs this offseason either setting us up for Parise 2.0

@NJDevs26 , when I said I was not going to sweat it when it came to Bratt earlier (and implied that any signing will happen this offseason), I meant it as HE *WILL* get re-signed this offseason.

Never in my mind, do I believe he will F**k off with some boytoy of his (like Pari$e did with $uter).

Besides, his girl is from NJ so that could also play a MAJOR factor here.

A) I don't think his dad actually got sick until after he got back home. It certainly wasn't reported until after the fact, when he actually got diagnosed who knows?
B) If it was such a fait accompli, why not just sign there on July 1 (especially after they all but tampered insinuating he'd get a blank check)...why go through the charade of talking to Detroit, Pittsburgh, the Flyers and whatever other team he was negotiating with at the time before that point?

And why also tie yourself to Suter if the idea was to go home all along? No guarantee Suter would want to go there or they'd pay him a Parise contract - I think Zach even left money on the table so he and Suter could get matching contracts (and also so he wouldn't have to have the $100 million man stigma that clearly weighed Kovy down).

I think it got retconned in hindsight, or people took Parise saying he was glad he was home during that period after his dad's condition became public news as something that was orchestrated to begin with. Parise leaves in the summer of 2012, it comes out in 2014 JP has cancer. Maybe he got diagnosed by 2012, maybe he didn't.

According to this, he was diagnosed around early 2014...so no that had zilch to do with Zach going home a year and a half earlier.

Well Parise 2.0 COULD have a different ending...but I don't see any way he signs by next offseason unless someone gives in (both sides have been intractable till this point) and I'm not sure the Devils can really trade him at this point now that they're in contender-land. Hence we sweat out him playing the last year on a one-year deal and hope the Devils make a deep enough playoff run to be worth it if he leaves.

It's also ironic the Elias and Parise final year situation was very similar since Elias played on a one-year deal in 2005, albeit due to illness rather than injury. It's just that since Elias re-signed (despite Lou's best effort to ghost him) we don't put that season in the same category with the Parise drama.

VOMIT. I don’t know who that man is on the right.

Fitz should get ripped into shreds then, Bratt has fed it to him twice in contracts years. At some point, you use Nico's and Jack's deals to overpay a homegrown star. This team has been in the wilderness for a decade and you're going to let a player walk due a 0.5-1M difference just as we're getting good?

A) he was diagnosed at the end of 2013, but that doesn't mean his health wasn't declining. No matter, it was his hometown team, and he was

B) there in Minnesota at his lake house after one day in Toronto fielding offers from clubs. It took him a couple of phone calls and like a day to decide, bc they came to agreement and announced it on July 4th. That's hardly taking your time with the process. Your one chance at free agency, I think that it probably behoves you to spend a day in Toronto.

In any case HOMETOWN TEAM.

He and Suter were discussing it long before free agency started that they would go as a package deal and Zach said Suter was no go on NJ when he brought it up. They planned to play together and Minn had the cap space for both and desire to make a splash.

I think people make it into something it isn't. He could've stayed in NJ but the universe sure looked like it was telling him something.

Every time I hear it I get annoyed. Admittedly I'm easily annoyed.

And the strange usage of "Let's go" as a random response is even worse.

Last week I told a young friend that I tied him a dozen flies that he wanted...his response was "let's go"...it pissed me off for some unbeknownst reason.

I told him thank you would suffice douche.

Parise never really wanted to stay, Bratt does. When push comes to shove, Bratt will be a Devil long term.

The big difference is Parise had a home to go to and could get paid to do it. Bratt has no connection with another place and we can pay him more than him going to UFA because of the 8th year. This is an elite team set up for long term success. Literally the only roadblock is the team deciding not to pay him.

I'm sorry, but there's still almost half the season left. Why does everyone think Carolina's locked into 1st? Were those the same people who thought we were locked into 1st November?

Panarin’s not even a top 2 Ranger. Fox and Igor are clearly better. I’d give Jack a slight edge over Fox. I don’t even have Panarin over Bratt, Dougie, Nico, (Timo pls) with the season he is having. He’s obviously still a great player but the playdriving has dropped off and the production isn’t out of this world
