NJ gives up Severson, Holtz, Blackwood, and a 2nd round pick for Meier.

For me, that’s probably too much value and you’ve really damaged the Devils defense for this season so I don’t think that’s a deal I would be interested in.
If the prevailing wisdom is that NJ would need to trade Holtz, a 1st and another high-end prospect for Meier at the very least... is this alternative really too much? Blackwood is the organization's third (maybe?) best goalie. Severson is a UFA who likely will not be retained. And you get to keep your 1st in the deepest draft since 2003.

I dunno. Maybe you're right.

Ok, tell me this is a stupid idea and tell me why:

Seattle is after two things at the deadline, goaltending and defense. There aren't a ton of options for either available. I'm not in the "we need to move on from Severson at all costs" camp at all. But.. hear me out.

Seattle gets: Damon Severson, MacKenzie Blackwood
New Jersey gets: Timo Meier
San Jose gets: SEA 1st, Alex Holtz, NJ 2nd

Maybe a couple more prospects fly around in the deal, probably from New Jersey. Does this trade make sense for... anyone?

We need Severson for play off. Devils will try to win the cup. Devils have enough non roster non critical assets to deal for Meier. If SJ specifically wants Savoie and Buffalo is ready to give, Severson will not help anyway.
When the play off will end, Severson will leave us for nothing(most chances). This is a price contenders pay. Good we have Nemec.

I think it depends upon what realistic trade might be available for Meier. In the abstract I’d be ok with moving Sverson and Blackwood for Meier if Meier extended with NJ. I’d see about a third pair RD at a lesser cost at the TDL for the playoffs. But it’s just a thought exercise.

The NYR fan base isn’t that much bigger than any other hockey fan base. Take the corporate seats away and NYR wouldn’t sell out most games in my view. When I was in NYC I had virtual season tickets to thr NYR . I figured out that almost every big to medium firm in NYC had a pair in the lower bowl at MSG. I had enough lawyer friends spread out that a buddy and I could get somebody’s pair for every game . For the most part people didn’t care about hockey. The Knicks were far more popular.

Everyone in here is being way too overcritical of Brunette getting arrested. Yeah it's a bad look but it's a golf cart and not a car. I highly doubt anyone would get fatally hurt operating one of those going 10 mph. I'm not excusing him for what he did but I trust some people more behind the wheel of a car hammered than I do some people sober. Also I'm sure there are many of you (myself included) who have drank enough alcohol and driven a car where we got lucky we didn't get pulled over and arrested. Have I driven a car lights out bombed where I was completely incoherent ? No. But have many of us had a few drinks where it impaired our judgement/reaction and drove ? Yes. It is what it is , it's an irresponsible decision. Stop acting like this is something that should have the guy fired. No one will care about this in a week or two.

But most here want to keep Sev's for this years playoff run. As currently constructed we don't really have a replacement for him.

And this would be the obvious accompanying move if we were to trade Sev's. Acquire a decent 3rd pair guy to fill that gap. Sev's as a 3rd pair is a luxury, probably don't need a player that good, and a more defensive oriented guy would have some benefits in the form of PK, and perhaps as a shepherd for Luke.

Still I doubt it happens, I feel like keeping a guy like Sev's, who has been here for so many years and we know(or at least really believe) is gone at the end of the year, is good for the mindset of the team.

Yea Sevo is munching too many minutes for us to trade him even though he likely walks in FA.

I think its ok value. A decent proposal. But we need Severson for the run and to a lesser extent Blackwood.

Plus if this is just a rental of Meier - than I'm a big no. Personally I don't want to give up much, if anything, for a major rental. Signed extension? I'd give up a lot.

But hey i'm no GM.

The Rangers have a huge fan base. You can't really dispute it much. Them playing in NYC is the biggest reason. I see plenty of their fans when I'm at work(nyc) and I see plenty of their fans where I live upstate (poughkeepsie). I also see plenty of Devils and Islanders fans up here. The Devils actually have a good size fanbase. It might not be reflected with their attendance but there was a study a few years ago and we were one of the teams that generates the most searches/buzz on the internet. We also have alot of fans that watch the games on tv compared to other teams.

I’m not saying they should have traded Matthews lol, he squeezed them pretty hard though.

Signing a bunch of massive contracts right before the pandemic/cap freeze is just bad luck.

Salaries went down, they’re only now starting to get back up to what the numbers were in the 2018 & 2019 off-season.

The Toronto AAV’s were huge at the time and Dubas to less term to even get the numbers down to that.

He was counting on a rising cap to at least make his life easier and he didn’t even get that lol.

To me it’s kind of unbelievable what Edmonton lost out on by the cap freezing. The McDrais contracts would have been ridiculously good if salaries kept going up and up.

Everyone thought the cap was going way up fast, that’s why there were all the platform bridge deals with the ridiculous QO for the top RFAs. Oopsie.
nylander, matthews and marner squeezed them pretty hard and the tavares signing was setting the stage.

Meh. They have a decent number of casual fans who live in the area and will claim some level of fandom if the Rangers go far in the playoffs or they are given free tickets. How many actual human beings watch more than 20 Rangers games per year? I think the sad reality is that no hockey team in the US has a huge fanbase. At least relative to other sports.

I feel the pushback against the discussion is seeing windmills.

One of the biggest and active fan base here. I would say top 6/8.

Let’s take a moment to honor the GOAT of cart catastrophe stories, this legend at a High School Championship at Dallas Stadium.

You know my favorite part of this is the coach in blue getting taken for a ride and making that decision to bail after steering for a while as if the twenty yard line was a two hundred foot crevasse while the other guy goes Indiana Jones and stops the thing.

I'm sure he had regrets and hoped the ensuing 400 foot fireball would have justified his actions.

Friends in NJ: My brother and I are going to the game against the Canucks on Monday.

We're planning on coming down from CT in the afternoon and looking to kill a few hours before the game. Any recommendations for good craft breweries or brewpubs in the Newark area (preferably on the north side of the city) that are open on Monday?

A lot of people in 2012 wanted us to trade Parise at the deadline so he didn't walk for nothing. IMO it was CLEARLY the right move to keep him. He wasn't amazing in the playoffs, but he was our captain and scored some big goals in the NYR series.

Whatever late first and two prospects we would have gotten for him would absolutely have not been worth as much as a Stanley Cup Finals run. Severson is not the same player Parise is but he is still a very important piece to this defense. If you deal him then you're one sketchy hit away from Brendan Smith in the the top-4 and two rookies on defense.

Like I keep saying, fans are more obsessed with ''getting assets'' and players walking for ''nothing'' than front offices and teams are.

It's actually almost robotic and cliche at this point.
