Why would you prefer 1 or 3 instead of 4?
1 means you get another shot him signing long term in a year, and more data as an RFA. I don't see the Devils being contenders over the next 3 years so I'm not sure I love the idea of having him at a cheapish deal for 3 years then having to pay through the nose as a UFA. The value isn't clear to NJ. 4 is not as bad as 3 and there's a chance NJ is a contender at the tail, and 5 is probably what we can reasonably hope for and would be best if long term is just out of the question.

The conversations here about the urgency to trade Bratt make no sense to me - but seems like some fans are hellbent on doom and gloom. I know there's nothing else to talk about and arguing is fun, so I'm just going to have to abstain from reading this thread. I personally think he can retain full trade value next summer if traded to a team that can agree to a deal, ala Matt Tkachuk.
I'm excited for the team's future as a whole. But when it's looking like Bratt is surely going to leave here, it puts a damper on things. Trade him now or as close to now as possible, get someone like Garland or Robertson in the process, and let him be someone else's problem.

Arbitration is not a death knell on him long term in NJ.
History shows that it probably will be. A healthy majority of players leave their team after arbitration.

This guy is going to resign with us in a heartbeat as long as the offer is reasonable. Jesper bratt is a good Nordic guy and has all of he’s good friends around him.
He’s on a team on the rise, he probably want the same as Hughes and hischier and I don’t blame him.

He’s not getting the same as Hughes man. He also has a seemingly tough agent and you have no clue what he wants.

No doubt in my mind he's getting offfered something in the Nico range from Fitz. If that was the case he'd be signed. It's all about term.

Yes, BUT - what the agent and potentially the player might be misunderstanding is being part of a team on the rise as a core piece requires the team to have cap flexibility. You can't have 5 top players and the rest of the team underperforming scrubs because the cap won't let us have better role players.

This probably is why teams with super high cap players aren't that successful. You need role players, 3rd and 4th lines are super important. 3rd D pairing is too.

If he wants $9M, bye bye. This is why I am happy we didn't get Gaudreau for $10M or close. Clearly Hughes, Hischier see this.

Why the hell would he sign here on any offer when there's not an inch of common ground? Bratt wants to prove himself and cash in as soon as possible- if he has to leave, so be it. Fitz has said he wants him to be a core piece.

Arbitration is happening, whether you like it or not. The relationship is going to shit, whether you like it or not.

Also... not even gonna ask what you mean by that bolded comment.

What I mean is that hes not a greedy guy I think he just want the same as hischier and that’s okay.

The problem with to many big contracts like Toronto is definitely not the bratt type, Dougie contract is the real problem if you want to build a deep squad. I don’t like what our gm bought in that monster of a contract.

With the contracts signed this offseason, the arbitrator is gonna side with Bratt. The Fiala contract alone is going to get him that 6.5M reward.

Arbitrators don't side with anyone in hockey. They tend to split things down the middle but I do think Bratt has a good case to get e.g. $5.5M

If it goes to arb, he is almost for sure going to be in the 5's. Not that it really matters considering it is a 1 year deal.

Timo Meier has a 10million QO, he's gonna be even harder to extend. He's also only had one ppg season while being older than Bratt. According to SJ fans he isn't very versatile either. He does have chemistry with Nico, but so does Bratt.

Meier is also not being a complete bitch about demanding a short-term deal. Any trade involving Bratt will inevitably involve us being hosed, but beggars can't be choosers.

Bottom line: we need a piece for the long term. If it's not Bratt, it's gonna have to be someone else.

term first, pay second gamer.
Ah, I see. Maybe that works but I still think that's a term too much for Bratt.
