We needed someone who can realistically play 3C all season who didn’t have a big cap hit.

If you judge this only by production… I can’t help you there.

Sorry if my realism (not saying I know what will actually happen, just that I try to be realistic) bothers you.

I think you are judging by production, Haula is not some two way defensive grinder. Boston fans were all over him early season since he was so terrible. It wasn't until he was put between Hall and Pastrnak that he started to have positive impact on ice. As a finn I'd love to see him work out for us and see us extend him, but I'm also just trying to be realistic ;)
My wish was to play Boqvist as 3C, he looked very good last season and I think he deserves to get a full season to show what he has or doesn't have. Healthy scratching him most of the season so he only plays here and there, and can't get into the groove, is terrible player development.

Which is unfortunate, but yeah… you have to. We should be able to get a pretty good return for Bratt. Not Tkachuk level, but an established winger that can play in the top-6 isn’t out of the question at all. Apparently, he had lots of interest at the deadline.
Were there any rumors of specific teams interested? I don't remember.

I just got an incredible craving for fried chicken...came out of nowhere. I wonder who has the best fried chicken in the general central New Jersey area?

I still think there’s time. We’ve seen clients of Bratt’s agent sign on the day of the hearing. I’m trusting Fitz on this one way more than Bratt and his agent.

It doesn't matter what Zacha does in Boston because was given above and beyond every chance to do something here and was the same year after year... streaky, disappointing, and soft. It would be different if it was something that didn't get a fair shot... but the opportunity Zacha got here was beyond fair.

8x8 is 64M GURANTEED. That's why they would accept it immediately. The fans get caught up in the term while the players and the agents care about the guranteed money.
But 64m guaranteed is less than .. say, 76m guaranteed, which is what he could get in two years if he goes to UFA after signing 6x2 or some ridiculously cheap contract.

I agree with you that Id take the guaranteed cash. But nowadays these guys are trying to capitalize on future contracts, because career ending injuries are still rare.

So basically, if Bratt signs a 1 year deal, he’s still an RFA after next season. So at worst, he signs a 1 year deal next summer as well. We have him for 2 years at a minimum.

Do we feel confident in the chances of signing him to a long-term contract next off-season if he signs a 1 year deal this summer, with more cap and big contracts coming off the board next off-season?

I am preparing for the shitstorm that will erupt here once we see :

CONFIRMED WITH LINK : Jesper Bratt signs 1-year deal

sigh....
Wayyyyy better than a 2-year deal. With the cap potentially going up and big contracts off the payroll, I could see them agreeing on a long-term deal next off-season with Bratt still an RFA. Especially if he replicates his season.

I do acknowledge the first 2 paragraphs and can live with 7.5m. I dont find it ideal but it could be a risk worth taking. This is the way/route how to assess a players worth (based on production, playmaking ability etc).

Where i completely disagree is the last paragraph. Considering other contracts by just saying theres worse stuff out there gets you easily into a slippery slope and into trouble cap-wise. "We can do this cause we screwed up already once", doest make any sense to me.

Its not just you, saw the same argumentation last night from someone else too (nothing personal).
It's not poor argumentation. I think Bratt will be worth pretty much any realistic contract he signs.

There are other deals the Devils shouldn't have done to keep cap flexibility.

Fool me once… shame on you
Fool me twice… shame on me
Fool me three times… no, you absolutely don’t let it get to three terrible negotiations and you trade him if he’s only signing a 1 year deal

Doesn't matter for our success, unless he scores a ton against us. But if Haula is terrible and Zacha excellent, you can't possibly be happy about the trade.
What's the alternative? Having Zacha here look awesome for 2 weeks before going 20-30 games without scoring? Watching him skate his big ass around without bothering to hit someone? There is absolutely nothing that Haula can or can't do to make me miss Zacha.

I guarantee you Bratt is getting a two year contract and leaving when he can. We should have traded him for Tkachuk.
Why would Fitz choose a 2-year deal that sends him to UFA? If it gets to arbitration, we get to choose if the deal is 1 or 2 years. Fitz would certainly choose a 1 year deal to keep him as a RFA.
