Poor kids brain has to be mush by now. Horrible

I totally forgot about the Gabriel hit.

Yes, I knew there were injury concerns. Glad we didn't pick him.

I briefly remember the Makar rumors near draft day...Oh well. Wish it went that way, but then I think we'd know how Sens fans felt for most of the 2010s.

Doesn't matter.

I wanted Nolan because 1) I don't like taking risers and 2) I didn't think the game would shift this quickly to a skate+skill-heavy style of play. I saw Patrick as a Getzlaf-lite guy. Glad to be wrong.

I still think Nico has a lot of work to do on his defensive game. From the draft, people have talked about a Selke-level two-way guy and I don't think we've seen that yet.

Nico's defensive game was severely overrated up until this season but this year he was pretty good, second lowest shots against on the team, highest quality of competition, and of course he was dragging around Zacha and playing half-hurt for most of the season. Hopefully we can get a full season out of Nico where he has good linemates.

While I mostly agree with your take here, the same was said about Bratt before he broke out this year. Nobody saw him as a cornerstone until he fully developed. He wasn’t off the table in his first few years.
That's definitely not true. glenwo2 would like a word with you.

GRRRRRRR! :ipeace

I think Bratt was a cornerstone the previous season(season before this past one) but just didn't have the production(through no fault of his own) to basically smack Fitz upside the head with "Hey! I'm a cornerstone, too, you blithering idiot!" yet.

What kind of 'new' poster looks at this forum, sees its 'Devils team discussion' thread at 255 pages and every other mega-thread that's going, and is like 'yeah this is a good community, gonna jump in here?'

This forum is not organized for new users and hasn't since I have been posting here, nor has it gotten very many.
Yeah this was really annoying for my first few years here but I've gotten used to it.

It's just made me read the main board more for league-wide news, which I guess helps with being an objective hockey fan and not viewing everything from the Devils fan bias.

Some people just kind of lose sight of how drafts work, or what constitutes a "bust". When you're drafting there's only so much info you can go by, and projecting the eventual career outcomes of a bunch of teenagers is a hell of a tough game to play. In recent times, this has only been exacerbated by the pandemic and the lost playing time a lot of these guys are dealing with, something that also makes adjusting to the NHL schedule and style even more difficult. But even under normal circumstances, you have to try and project how a guy might grow physically after age 18, and a litany of other factors. If you come out of a draft and have just one guy become a NHL regular, that's really not bad...and anyone who can become a regular on the big league level should not by any means be labeled a "bust", even if they don't hit their top projections.

Hell, I'll bet there are a few teams that draft great but are crap at the player development side of things, leading to them not getting as much out of their draft picks as they should; Marty's whole thing earlier this season about how the Devils have been rushing too many high draft picks to the big leagues seemed to be a sign of recognition that the Devils had been failing in player development in recent history and that they're working to rectify that. That's good, and I obviously hope it bears fruit.

All this in mind, I'm absolutely not about to act all scared that Holtz is not going to make it or something. To be clear, it's entirely possible he doesn't really make it; any number of factors from injuries to a sheer inability to transition to the NHL game could pop up, shit happens. But a kid who's just getting used to this style of play, who's still like 20 or whatever? No, I refuse to freak out about that. Sometimes players need more time, whether its to physically grow, get mentally sharper, or work out other adjustments they need to make, and that's just how it goes sometimes.

Unrelated, but I've got a 20% coupon I can use on NHL Shop and I think I want a black jersey. Main thing: I can either pay $180 for an authentic without a name/number (before the discount), or $250 to get the shop to put the name/number on for me. Curious if you guys think it makes sense to just have the shop do it (though then I have to think of whose number I actually want, shit!), or to take the blank one...and if I do take the blank one, where do you like going to get numbers stitched on around Jersey?

Ugh, I suddenly miss having Sports Express at Livingston Mall available to me. I don't live by the mall anymore, but I still work pretty close to it, and it came in handy circa 2008-2010 for my Devils and Mets jersey needs. Those guys even had Patty sign my jersey for no extra cost when I got the stitching done with them! Sweet, sweet memories...

I forget if it was Conte or someone else, but I seem to recall one of our scouts comparing picking players in the NHL draft to looking at an 8th grade class and trying to pick out the kids who will become doctors.

I think it's a pretty good analogy. It's damn near impossible to be right consistently, and you're going to have surprises. Some that seemed like sure things will fall short, and others will come out of nowhere to reach success.

Bratt added to the trade bait board

10. Jesper Bratt
Right Wing, New Jersey Devils
Age: 23
Stats: 76 GP, 26 G, 47 A, 73 Pts
Contract: Pending RFA, Arbitration Eligible
Scoop: Admittedly, Bratt is a bit of a perplexing name on the board. GM Tom Fitzgerald said after the season Bratt is a big part of New Jersey’s future. Makes sense. He is a heck of a player. He’s young. He’s worked his way to become a point-per-game guy from a 6th-round pick. On the other hand, sources indicated Bratt was available at the deadline last spring. To my knowledge, there have been no contract extension talks to this point for what will be an expensive deal. Add in Fitzgerald’s mandate to find “hard skill” this summer, and well, it makes you wonder.

Seravelli is no longer a reliable source. He's peddling this trade board and it's sure to have names on it that don't even get close to being dealt.

There's definitely some click baity stuff in there. He puts in that Gibson "requested a trade" when it was also reported that from multiple people that Gibson had in fact not done that (and the original source of the Gibson trade request was nobody that I'm well aware of previous to that).

Also, I still refuse to believe that Zacha shouldn't be the highest listed NJ asset on any trade board list if you're going based on the likelihood of being dealt lol

The only person I'll listen to is Kevin Weekes. If I'm not getting my information in the form of an impromptu video, I don't care.

I see no fault with this strategy

The only person I listen to Ryan Novozinsky. And that's for everything in life now.

He already came out and QT'd the list and said "nah" lol

He's been great, but if he's just going to stick to plain old articles to break news then it'll set him back in my opinion. The Weekes' video meta is too powerful

The team lumping in Cutter with the top 3-4 like they have been all summer is interesting. Might just be who they had the most footage of but I get the sense if we do trade back he's the target

here is the writeup on Bratt. ZERO chance he was available for trade at last years deadline.

Bratt was "available" at the deadline like the #2 pick is "available" now. A trade can be made if someone is willing to pay through the nose, but that is unlikely.

That’s such a stupid and clearly just trying to make a headline.
Even dumber than putting the devils #2 pick at 5 and saying the top 5 pieces have a 90% chance of being moved even though trades like that never ever happen and there’s probably a less than likely chance of that happening even if Fitz is aggressively looking into it.

Eh, I'm not sure on that. Less likely chance to win a Bratt trade even at the deadline than it is to win a trade with the second overall involved.
