OK thanks, ESPN+ is what I used last year but couldn't find definitive info on the upcoming year.

He was Marino with better offensive skill. As for Luke while I see so much promise I think he has a ways to go to catch up to Niedermayer.
Different times... Niedermeyer played under restrictions that Luke won't have to... Niedermeyer never really put up massive numbers in NJ. I mean Dougie has just had a season with 17 points more than Niedermeyer ever scored in NJ.

Now don't get me wrong, Niedermeyer was a great, I understand points don't tell the whole story...and that he was a great two way defender...All of that is absolutely true...but still, he never put up gaudy numbers here in NJ. I expect Luke to.

Philly better be broadcasting it or we get a stream. Every preseason game should be shown

They may do a stream with Chico/Matt that piggybacks the scoreboard camera. They did this a couple of times over the last several years.

Usually the home teams cover the preseason games and let the away team borrow the broadcast so its likely up the the Devils to provide something.

It was effortless for Niedermayer and as you noted he played on a team that was defense first second and third and in an era when the game was much more violent and less skilled players were allowed to clutch grab elbow punch poleaxe shank knee cross check and stab the good players to the detriment of the game. In today’s game I think Niedermayer would have been a perennial Norris trophy contender. I think he was every bit the skater Makar is and he was much better defensively. On today’s Devils he’d probably be good for a point per game with dominant defensive metrics and the best transition metrics of any defender. Like Karlsson with less goal scoring but much better in the neutral zone and defensive end. Luke has big shoes to fill. I don’t think I’m telling you anything you didn’t already know.

Bruce Driver was so damn underrated it's not even funny.
He was a guy that I don’t think anyone really hated for going to the Rangers (or at least they shouldn’t) because from what I remember, the reason he signed with them and not us was merely because of trade protection that the Rangers were willing to give him, that Lou wasn’t.

And in signing with the Rangers, he didn’t have to move his family or at least not too far. This was before no trade clauses became almost standard, but not too many years before that. I don’t know who the first player Lou gave an NTC was. I would bet he gave Stevens one at some point. Elias got one in 2006. Guys like Brodeur and Niedermayer were too young to really get them before that, but Brodeur definitely had one on the big, discounted contract he signed in 2006.

John MacLean also said to have signed with the Rangers to be back closer to his family after his deal with the Sharks expired. He wasn’t coming back to the Devils after publicly asking for a trade 6 months earlier, so signing with the Rangers allowed him the chance to keep his family in Jersey.

I think Driver was a big loss in 1995. He was already 33 years old, but I’m pretty sure a lot of his minutes were replaced by Lyle Odelein. Bruce Driver in 1995-1996 was definitely better than Odelein. Shawn Chambers probably also took over some of those minutes in 95-96, who we traded for mid-season in 94-95.

I think he was an extremely underrated loss for us after the first cup year.

I would say he was our third best defenseman from the 94-95 team. You can even debate that he was better than 21 year old Niedermayer that season. By 95-96 I think Niedermayer was definitely better than Driver.

He was really one of the first Devils alumni guys. Probably since he retired in 98. So he’s been active with the organization in some way pretty much since he was drafted, outside of the last three years he played in the league with the Rangers.

Bruce Driver and John MacLean are the two players I associate with the early years of the Devils and the transition from Mickey Mouse to cup winner.

They were here early enough to where the team was really bad, and they were both still here late enough for the first cup win. Whereas someone like Kirk Muller who is many times associated with the early days was gone for a few years by the first cup.

But they were both gone by the late 90’s, whereas an OG like Daneyko was still around for the next two cup winners.

Shawn Chambers was Drivers replacement in 96... Smith came up in 96 and was a fixture on the 3rd pairing. With intervals of being paired with Stevens. But he replaced Chambers minutes.

Odelein didn't get here until the the 96-97 season and he was definitely a top 4 Dman with us that year.

People were too hard on Palat last year. He had major groin surgery and never was right. I expect him to be much better this season. He showed us some flashes of what he is last year. He's a streaky player but when he's hot he's scoring in bunches.
Agreed. Even with the injury he was at about 0.5 PPG all year and over 0.5 PPG in the playoffs. I expect a solid year from him with a whole summer to recuperate.

I forgot Odelein didn’t come until 96-97. I associate him with the dry-ish era that started the season following the cup.

I know that worthless turd Steve Thomas definitely came in 95-96, cause he was the piece of toilet pap I mean piece we got back for Claude Lemieux.

I think Andreychuk also came in around the 96 deadline, along with Housley (who was memorably bad here in his brief tenure) And then Gilmour at the trade deadline the next year.

I didn’t mind Andreychuk as a Devil when he got here. His first full season was good, but it felt like he was dropping off his last two years here. Of course he would become a 20+ goal scorer again after departing.

Unreasonably. He was signed for experience and play off. He played for his money against rangers. And you mentioned injury stuff.
It's not like someone thought that he will be 6 mil impactful player for the end of his deal.

His contrat also is pretty easily movable or “buyout-able” eventually if it comes to it.

And for the next two years (at least) it isn't look like the cap is a problem.
And its not like he is the healthiest player to not "hossing-clowing-webbering" him.

And I think people are overreacting on Holtz development. Only 9 players from 2020 draft played 40+ games in previous season. And only 2-3 players played well their shorter time on stage. For Holtz its only beggining and its nothing special or bad there.

Holtz can contribute this season with any luck and shake the earlier struggles.
