My response would be who is out there that is? You’re either bringing in another vet coach with similar credentials (Boudreau, Gallant) or a rookie coach who’s a total unknown
The safe play is bring in the total unknown to be a part of the staff now for a grooming period.

A lot of players have progressed a lot under him and seem to really like him, that plus the monster year last year. Would any of this be the same under a different coach and he doesn't matter or should we sign him to another 5 years right now? No clue, but it without a doubt has earned him the chance to prove something this year.

We may already have someone here for the grooming period. Unfortunately that’s Travis Green. Hopefully he doesn’t suck as much as it seemed like he did with Vancouver (a dumpster fire organization) but I’m not too excited about him possibly being Ruff’s successor. I’d rather keep Ruff over promoting him.

I don't disagree that he's earned the right for another kick at the can.

I'm not sure that he's got anymore to give... I'm not sure he's the guy to get every single ounce out of each player.

It's really just a hunch, a feeling on my part. It just seems like that was the best we can get from Ruff and we need more to eventually win another 3 rounds.

I don't know?

Am I alone in thinking Ruff is not the right guy?

I mean I think he was good for the transitional period of the team going from wretched to decent but he's not the guy to go from decent to the pinnacle... that's my feeling.

And with that thought I can't help but think we might be wasting a year with him at the helm.

Eh...most of us thought that when Ruff was brought in.

The guy just presided over one of the largest turnarounds in league history, set the franchise points record, won a playoff round and was a Jack Adams finalist.

Most players seem to really like him as well. Not sure how you could realistically cut him lose after that, unless you're Lou.

And even if we do fall short this season, I wouldn't consider it "wasting a year" as even with a different coach, chances are high we'd fall short as it's hard to win the Cup - so don't go feeling validated if that is the case.

Ahh..excellent point.

I forgot about his addition. I'm looking at his record now...He did get to the finals of the Calder Cup as a head coach in Utica. His overall record in the WHL and AHL are pretty good with some success.

I was a little shocked to see that he's my age, same birth year...I thought he was younger.

Maybe he is the guy?

Green also played with Fitz on the Island and with Boston.

So Fitz knows what he is I'm sure.

I really hope they're not viewing Green in the light. I'm still bummed we lost Brunette. I really think he would of been the perfect next coach but oh well.

One of my few memories of him as a player was scoring a goal against us in what was a 1-0 win back in 02-03 when he played for the Leafs. Things were ending at the time between myself and my girlfriend of 5+ years. I remember watching that game and not paying much attention to her (the usual for those 5 years when Devils games were on, which led to her telling me multiple times, especially at the end to ''Go f*** Brodeur!'' or ''How about you go and have sex with Elias? He seems to turn you on more than I do!'' lol) and I remember watching that game on maybe one of the last days we were together.

It wound up being a 1-0 final score with Corey Schwab in net for us. I think we outshot them like 40-13 or some shit. I remember ranting about how annoying it was watching us not able to score on old man Belfour, who looked about burnt crispity the season before that in Dallas. That was a bigger deal to me than fixing our relationship, which was probably beyond fixing by that point anyway.

I don't know how in the world you remember this stuff. Seriously I can't remember details of a random game that specifically from 20+ years ago...

Especially if someone was giving me attitude during the game, all I would remember is that.

I had to look it up on hockey reference and that game was on December 7th of 2002, which checks out, as we were done by Christmas, but awkwardly exchanged gifts (that were probably purchased already before the breakup) and spent Christmas Eve/Christmas day with each other and our families.

Shots were 38-14 Devils and the goal was scored at 12:43 of the 1st period at even strength.

I have no absolutely no recollection of what the goal looked like.

It feels like any non-Brodeur game from those years and for about 15 years between 95 and 10 should stick out, as there weren't many games he didn't play between those years, with the exception of about 3 or 4 months in the 08-09 season when he was hurt.

I hear ya on Brunette but what is your issue with Green? Honest question.

That makes a lot of sense...I guess the non Brodeur games would stand out to a goalie watcher.

I usually just remember moments, a goal, a hit, a fight, a nice play... I can still see in my mind vividly Kirk Muller tipping a shot while facing away from the net between his legs past the goalie at Byrne ...I don't remember the year, I don't remember the game, I don't remember who I was with. I remember the play that's it.

The Vancouver fans trashed his coaching ability pretty hard when he was announced as going to join the NJ staff. I can't recall the specifics but it was pretty ugly.
I'm not really impressed with his NHL resume either, although to be fair Vancouver has been a shitshow organization for a while, so how much of that was him and how much the roster/talent im not sure. Plus it was his first stint as a head coach in the NHL, so maybe he's learned from it. If he's Ruff's successor...let's just say I'm skeptical that he's "the right guy".
