That's a really bizarre situation for Boston.

Swayman is good and young so that's the obvious choice long term. But trading the Vezina holder is not really a common thing I guess.

If we are actually going big on a goalie long term then you hope Sorokin goes to UFA next year. I'm more than fine going with Hellebuyck as a rental and figuring our shit for the future out next summer

Id rather have Hellebyuck long-term than Ullmark for two years

We need to think term here; we cant be going every year or two needing a goalie during our prime contention window

Once the cap has risen a few years over, goalies (and other talent) will be gobbled up much quicker than they are now


Its extremely greedy but so happens to land on an explosion in cap space over the next half-decade

If done properly and the right contracts are signed over time, it can fit and with some wiggle room to boot

Last year he fetched jumping up from 46 to 37 and 70. Late 2nd/early 3rd makes sense for him value wise

Of course it would be more, Ullmark's coming off a Vezina AND signed for two more years compared to Helle being a rental atm.

Hellebuyck's been consistently elite for years. Ullmark's a good goalie who had a completely unsustainable year. Maybe the 2nd year offsets things a bit but Hellebuyck's the better one.

I think it'd be Vitek going the other way rather than 50% Helle even though I'd prefer that. Winnipeg still wants to compete so they'd probably like to have Vitek. Igor's the dream for sure lol. Just completely crush them.

27/28 and 30, especially for a goalie, is a BIG difference. Whether you choose to believe that or not is up to you, but just know you're wrong.

Sorokin will be 29 at the start of his deal. Hellebuyck will be 31. 2 years is not a hair splitting difference. That's a substantial difference.

How is it any more of a blind spot than the tandem of Vanecek Blackwood that we went into last season with? Or the Schneider (after 3 straight BAD decline years and being 33 years old) Blackwood tandem of 2019 that Shero had the audacity to think we could actually compete with?

So, something that occurred to me thinking about the Toffoli acquisition and the rumors about Hellebucyk. Tom Fitzgerald doesn't like deadline acquisitions. He's talked about how a deadline acquisition has a hard time performing at the highest level and gelling properly with his team, because they're moving mid-season, they haven't practiced with their teammates, they're learning a new system...

Toffoli and (potentially) Hellebucyk are our deadline acquisitions. They're just deadline acquisitions that Fitzgerald wants to make before preseason, so we can get the best out of them later on. These aren't players that we would have traded for a year ago -- they're too old, their contracts are expiring. They're rentals. We're just trying to rent them early (and hopefully more cheaply), so that when the playoffs do come, they have every opportunity to perform at their best.
