so if timo re-signs for $8.5/8, we have the following guys locked up long term (4+ years):

nico
hughes
bratt
timo
palat

dougie
siegs
marino

and that’s without all the young team-controlled guys. i’m pretty good with this core. and aside from dougie and palat, all of those contracts are under market value, which is pretty impressive.

I don't know if its by chance or design, but half the team went to free agency on the final year of the low cap. Ideal situation

JFC, relax
I’m perfectly relaxed. Love it when someone interjects and offers nothing but a projection about how a poster may feel (from a few sentences on a message board). Add something constructive to the conversation or keep scrolling, hoss.

Even Dougie it’s not like he’s overpaid. Just fairly paid

I would also assume that Mercer joins that group sometime soon.

Patches? I feel like he’ll end up just staying in Carolina but that’s a top 6 bet I take even with how the last year went for him

Assuming we can re-sign Timo at 8.5. That would leave us with a little under 15. Do you think we could fill out our roster with ELC’s and perhaps weaponize our cap space one last time on an expiring contract?

He's actually the perfect fit in the top 6 but I think he waits for a deal till camp on a PTO or something super short term. Would be awesome for Holtz's development to learn one from one of the better snipers the last decade too.

A lot of what if's left with the RFA's, I can see them getting a stop gap RHD to be 100% safe with Nemec's development and also a few tweaks in the bottom 6.

Presumably the team has to wait on the Hockey Canada investigation to be finished or released publicly to make any contract decision with McLeod.

If we could fit him in under the cap and he's remotely close to the same player he was this time 12 months ago, that's easily the best offense in the league.

What's his recovery timeline?

It's normally 9 - 12 months for an achilles tear. He rushed back the first time. I can't imagine he's back any sooner than December, but possibly Feb / Mar?

I don’t think fitting him would be a problem. I just can’t see him getting that much after missing a year

I am now officially on team Acquire Hellebuyck.

Coming off the cap this and next offseason:

Blackwood, Vanecek, Schneider Buyout, Kuokkanen Buyout, Kovalchuk penalty= $8,775,000 in cap space.

Without even thinking about how much the cap may go up, if Hellebuyck would take 7.5/year for a 3/4 year extension we are significantly upgrading the goaltending position with one of the best in the league.... and actually saving cap space.

He’s not signing a 3-4 year/7.5m deal though.

I would take him on that too but there’s no way that’s even remotely happening.

You aren’t getting him that low while giving him no term. It’s not happening.

And he’s not signing for 3-4 years either. Kuemper was 32 when he signed and he got 5 years despite injuries/decline.

Less term is 6 years at most and he’s not taking less than 8m. And less term means a higher AAV.

Don’t fantasize a contract you like here, it’s a UFA deal for a superstar goalie. It’s going to be huge and ugly. Not 9.5m isn’t 7.5m, it’s 8.5m and he’s getting a lot of term.

I still think Helleybuyck's best trade return will be Winnipeg retaining 50% and without an extension. He might hit UFA but the acquiring team will want to wait to give him an extension.

Vanecek and Sharangovich probably gets outbid in that scenario imo. Holtz would have to be included perhaps and I think i'd balk at that.

It would have to be Hellebuyck wanting to be here and the Jets taking whatever the Devils offer. If the Kings get PLD, that knocks out a legit destination for him, not sure how many other teams can offer contender status + a possible future deal other than NJD. It could be like the Timo situation all over again or we do what the Avs did with Kuemper.

thats why you go out and get a proven top notch goalie if you don't have faith in the young cheap option we ran with last year can't waste a year to find out vitek/schmid isn't the answer. again i'm fine going with the same duo as last year but i'm also fine going and getting someone thats an upgrade i'm not concerned about their age or hit

vitek would almost certainly be going the other way in a trade
