I wanted to go to grad school and study genetics. First week of class my advisor was like "you know how to use R, right?" I told him no. His instructions were "Okay, well go learn R this weekend, then on Monday come back and we'll get started." Yeah dude, I'll just learn R in two days and be ready to go.

I ended up getting my master's despite doing the absolute bare minimum, then promptly changed fields. I loved learning about the topic, I just hated doing the work. I have no idea how you coders do it, that shit sucks. If the Devils post a job opening for a vertebrate physiologist I'll definitely apply.

Actually I was wondering if you can tell me how Jacob Trouba skates around without a spine.

The dirty little secret of coding is EVERYTHING has been written already and Google is your best friend...

The first real application I worked on in a professional setting was in Visual Basic and entire looping and file parsing routines were taken directly from the MSDN (Microsoft Developers Network) documentation. Verbatim.

Holy shit, what a ridiculous statement from your advisor. I've used R professionally for almost 10 years now, and I still don't know what the f*** I'm doing half the time without Googling it.

Someone once described R to me as "the Dark Souls of coding languages" and I'd say that's more or less accurate. Python is slightly more beginner-friendly, but only just.

Seriously, thinking anybody could learn R in a weekend is mindblowingly insane, especially from somebody who should definitely know better.

With the D you probably take a slight but I don’t think it’s really substantial. Not concerned at all on Luke. Miller’s a good add. Bahl’s a bit of a question. He should at least be a decent bottom pair guy. If he ends up being a really good bottom pair guy then it looks good. By the end of the year Nemec should be ready to make an impact too.
Exactly. Agree 100%. The goaltending I’m confident about, but I feel like it’s a bigger question mark than D.

I don't understand the Trouba hate? I like him.
I think it's the cheap shot stuff that gets to people. In the old days when you might get called to account for it there was more tolerance of it, or maybe expectation of it, from a fan perspective. But in today's game, where guys don't fight and don't get called to account and the league turns a blind eye, it's often seen more as disrespectful to the other players. I don't doubt he's a good guy off the ice and he is reasonably skilled and talented if overpaid. I was agnostic on him until I watched the chicken wing video someone made about him and it was disappointing to see him go out of his way to try to hit guys with his elbow extended. I'm not sure he understands that a forearm shiver is an illegal bodycheck.

National TV Schedules are out. Devils appearances as follows:
* 8 Games on TNT
* 2 Games on ESPN
* 1 Game on ABC (MetLife Game)
* 5 on ESPN+ (including the opener again)

They are over the maximum games allowed for TNT so three of them (Bos in Dec, Caps game in Jan., and Lightning Game in Feb.) will be blacked out in NJ/NY in favor of MSG.

Looks like the 3 will be Bruins, Caps (second one) and TB

Entomology is pretty important to fly fishing. :)
Fly fishing seems like a lot of fun. I think fishing just in general is a really great way for people to get into science, especially kids. Not only studying the actual biology of the animal, but even just basic cause/effect. Fishing in the morning and fishing at night cause me to catch different species, why is that? Earthworms will attract this species but not this species, why not? It's a good exercise for curious minds.
