I think Bratt would've stayed, Meier wouldn't have been acquired though, and I'd much rather have Meier.

Gaudreau will most likely pot more points, but Meier brings a much needed element to our top-6.

Gaudreau: season 681 games 1.00 P/GP TOI 19 min, playoffs: 42 games 0.79 P/GP TOI 19 min || 9.8M
Meier: season 472 games 0.70 P/GP TOI 17min, playoffs: 46 games 0.52 P/GP TOI 16 min || 8.8M

On paper it seems neither is a high value contract.

Neither can be seen as a playoff performer, since both drop in production compared to regular season, but even if you normalize the TOI Gaudreau would come on top in production. For CBJ better choice would probably be Gaudreau, for Devils Meier. Reasons should be obvious: other team needs a big name and maximum production while the other has specific need for physicality.

Johnny G is certainly a better player than Meier. But I think if you look at Johnny's strengths - driving play, setting up team mates, individual finishing, etc - that skillset is redundant on the Devils roster as currently constructed. We have Jack, we have Nico, we have Bratt.

What we need is a different element, and Timo provides exactly that. Physicality, nose for the net, PP accumen. He's a volume shooter, which is always nice as that always generates chances. I think we're really fortunate that things worked out the way they did.

Gaudreau is a fantastic player who would have made the team better, and for a guy like that you always make room. But I wouldn't have things any other way. I love the way this team is set up for the short, mid, and long term.

I would totally love to see the Blue Jackets shot in the head in front of their wife and grandbabies, then have their already dead head flattened by a rolling SUV.

By the way, am I the only one that thought they dropped the ball by not bringing in Joe Pesci to be the random hitman to whack Phil? That just needed to happen. I know he was retired from acting for a bit during that time period, but he was really needed for a cameo just to whack Phil. Kind of like his Bronx Tale 5 minutes.
They’re pretty much even with each other after Goodfellas and Casino lol, since Tommy whacked Billy Bats (Vincent) in the former but then Frankie left Nicky (Pesci) in a cornfield at the end of Casino.

He played the left board, where Jack is usually set up on. He's not touching that here obviously which is why having him PP2 probably makes more sense anyway. You'd have 2 units that could flourish tremendously.

Ya i got this from the flames board. Seems to blow up the idea he should be the bumper, or even a lock to be on pp1.

“He was actually used predominantly on the top's of the left circle as a catch and release shooter, which is strange because that's where Huberdeau excelled in Florida. He was the focal point of our PP in the second half of the season - which was good for him individually, but made for stale setup that was predictable and easy to defend. He's got a great shot (but again, not really a one timer threat), but lacks creativity, vision, and the ability to move the puck quickly.

I honestly don't think he's a guy you want on a top PP unit, but more of a go to option for unit 2.”

I still hope he can be effective as a net front.

Pesci is already ahead of him with the brutal beat down he gave his character in Raging Bull, though I suppose they’re even in actual whackings.

Yeah, I remember him scoring a goal last year from that spot versus us. So that's why I remembered it distinctly.

I don't understand the hate for him from here. Granted I really didn't want him on the team to begin with, but he was a FA who chose where he wanted to go. I don't really care why he told the media he wanted to go there.

I 100% see the humor in that quote and find it funny with the context, but some people seem to genuinely hate him because he didn't choose "us." It's just weird to me.
Eh, I don’t see how making fun of him means you hate him.

The team he desperately wanted to play for was the Flyers, so if anyone was hilariously rejected it was Gaudreau. He pivoted to Columbus after Fletcher’s presser was announced (meaning Philly was done).

His long time pal DeAngelo got signed by the Flyers and so that asshat got to live that dream. (That will also never not be funny to me.)

@Bleedred has real hate in his heart for the Blue Jackets but he’ll have to answer to god for that I guess. Who are we to judge? We can only be entertained.

If he signed with maybe 25 other teams I wouldn’t have made fun of him.

Columbus is on my no-sympathy/do not sign list.

f*** that organization.

The only time I have sympathy for someone playing there is when they either get traded (and have no say) or if it’s their only option cause they aren’t any good in the first place and it’s hard for them to get contracts. I don’t hold it against Jon Gillies for playing there, though I’ll make fun of his horrid goaltending.

Unfortunately, Severson also falls into this category, as he willingly signed there after we traded his rights.

He’s gonna love playing in front of Elvis the king of softies MerzLEAKins, after calling out our goaltending in 21-22.

Elvis probably had the worst season in the league when you take into account how many games he played while performing that badly. Quremains somehow played 11 more games than Elvis did, so he probably beats out hunk of burnin love.

Pretty good chance Elvis isn’t as bad next year, but I’ve been calling out Elvis for years and have never bought him. He overachieved his first two years in the league, particularly his first year, which was inflated by a stretch where he had 5 shutouts in a span of 8 starts. The market correction was already in full effect by the time the season was halted because of the shutdown.

Elvis is always good for some of the softest, leakiest, most ridiculous goals I find. And his contract really sucks.

Tarasov was also horrible last year and looked like he was an Elvis clone, with the leaky bullshit, mind numbingly soft goals. You wouldn’t know they weren’t the same player if you didn’t see the back of the jersey. And somehow Korpisalo played like some kind of artificial robot in contrast to career performance.

Bastian is definitely an option if there are injuries.

The short time he was given he did perform convincinly. While he didn't respresent any god tier deflections, he stood extended periods of time 1 inch away from the goalies face and manage to get away from it. It was really funny looking.

Yea I agree he never really got any deflections, but it's hard to pin that on him. It could just be that was never their strategy, and their strategy was for him to just block the goalie's vision while guys like Hamilton and Jack just rip it.

Not sure what this is attempting to link, but I'd be fine with this deal as a Caps fan.

Little known fact about Joe Pesci, he was actually a singer and performed in bands way back in the day. That wasn't his first album, he actually released one 30 years earlier in 1968

It's okay. His voice is a little gravelly, both for my liking and probably for this style of music to have really became big and made him rich. Sweet bass line though.

The whole album is on there in a playlist.

My mom's ex-husband from way back's father is from Newark and was friends with Joe Pesci, as well as Tony Lip and I think maybe even Frank Vincent and a lot of those guys, from before they were stars. He's still alive and is about 93 years old, but I haven't spoken to the man or seen him in about 30 years.

He did have pictures with Joe Pesci, several of them, that he would show us.

I know Joe lived on that little island in Lavallette for years and I was told he would ride his bicycle around regularly, but I think he's since moved.

It was weird and funny seeing him portrayed in Jersey Boys.

You should start to count bad defense more. Sometimes(often) if defensemen can't hold the zone, goalie us trying to be ready for pass and be ready for the shot in the same time. Its not an easy task.

Now jackets have better defense, question is will their overall defensive system be better, than what they "used" year ago.
Theirs talents pipe line is good. May be not this year, but they will start to be a good team soon. That was fun to mock on them(for me too, didn't wanted of sign Johnny Gaudreaunee, very happy with Bratt and Meier over him. But from now, with Johnson, Jiricek, Mateychuk, Svozil, Fantilli, Ceulemans, Sillinger, Chinakhov,(a lot of good defensive prospects) and older players they will be very good team soon. I like our roster more, but it doesn't mean they can't find specific coach and build defensive first system and use breakaways as a main offensive threat.

I would say that is a good educated guess.

It's hard to see 4th line grinder that you rarely see on PP getting used the same way as ~Pavelski who practices the deflections almost every single day (and often with the same unit).
