I never pass up a chance to post this picture and quote:

i-came-here-to-win-hockey-games-you-sure-did-buddy-v0-d8q9b0ayom4a1.jpg
There were much nicer wins than these two last year, but I had so much fun watching us beat the Blue Jackets 8-1 (or 8-2?) two different times last year.

It was like when you're most hated movie/TV character gets brutally murdered, and it's okay to get excited over it because it isn't real.

I don't understand the hate for him from here. Granted I really didn't want him on the team to begin with, but he was a FA who chose where he wanted to go. I don't really care why he told the media he wanted to go there.

I 100% see the humor in that quote and find it funny with the context, but some people seem to genuinely hate him because he didn't choose "us." It's just weird to me.

IIRC they offered him more. Can't get made at the guy when we weren't even the highest bidders. He might have also just genuinely thought they'd be better. Which obviously very dumb to anyone who pays attention to the league but I'd bet there's a ton of players who have no in depth knowledge about teams outside of their own. We were bottom feeders for years coming off a 63 pt year where we were the 5th worst team. Jackets weren't great or anything but they still had 18 more pts than us

I don't hate Gaudreau for not choosing the Devils. It's Gaudreau's loss, because we are a contender now and Columbus is still perpetually rebuilding. In hindsight, I'm fine with the way it turned out, with us acquiring and re-signing Meier instead.

I just think it's hilarious (and memeworthy) that his stated reason for signing with one of the saddest sack franchises in the league is so transparently bullshit. I'd have more respect for him if he said he went there for the money or because his wife made him.

I'm glad we didn't sign Gaudreau because Bratt would've been a goner.

I don't think so. Clearly we had the cap space and money for both Bratt and Meier to get long term deals.

More likely Bratt would have gotten the same contract, and it would have squeezed out a different forward. Like maybe Haula doesn't get re-signed, or we don't bring in Toffoli, but we still trade Shara because his new contract would cost too much. Hard to game out the counterfactual scenario.

In any case, with Gaudreau and without Meier, that would still be a weaker team than what ended up happening.

He did its a big favor actually. Be careful what you wish for. I sure am glad we didn't get him.

I presume the pro scouts look at every other team and if they see something systemic they believe might work they will pass it on.
Fox running the Rangers power play and Kreider tipping pucks down low. The Hurricanes copied it with Burns up top last year. When you have an extraordinarily agile and fluid player on the top, his movement cutting from side to side keeps the defense backing off and adjusting to his shot possibilities, and then the net front guy down low finds the soft spots to the side and front of the net and the QB does a shot pass, or a plain shot if he sees a screen develop if the defense reacts to the guy playing Kreider's role and crosses the goalmouth to cover. The guy in Foxes position also has the option of the one timer on the sidewall. When you have that kind of creativity and movement up top, it opens up so much.

I don't get why people have a problem with Nico on PP1. He's going to be one of the last shooting options to begin with between Jack, Timo, Dougie and Toffoli. Having a guy who can win the draw in the zone, dig the puck out and facilitate in the middle, and clean up pucks down low is not a bad thing with all the additional skill the other players will bring.

It's a good thing to have several options for both PP units. The strategy and deployment will be the biggest factor in whether they're successful, in my opinion.

As one of the biggest “faceoffs don’t matter much” guys one of the few places it’s relevant is the PP. I don’t think anyone else you’d be throwing on PP1 over him to play that role would be some big improvement. He’s a great faceoff guy and he’s obviously highly skilled and good around the net. Even if you don’t think he’s perfect yet guys get better on the PP with age and he’s the best option we have

He should also surely improve with time on that shot from the bumper that Oshie and Bergeron are and were so good at. As someone pointed out above, it’s a difficult skill because you are usually making the shot a little off your back foot, with the pass coming behind you as you pop further out to the open area in the high slot; like a fall away jump shot in basketball you’ve been moving away from the net to get position, yet speed and accuracy on the shot are essential. It’s counter intuitive to what most shots require where you are leaning into the puck and generated more from the shoulders and arms than the lower body. Very few players are really good at it.

Oilers 32%+ powerplay isn't a bad one to learn from. Greatest powerplay of modern times and probably best ever even with a margin.

The way they get Draisaitl open for one timers near the goal line looks like the key. Colorado uses the same spot with Rantanen with bit less success, but it's still effective. Would not be surprised if Devils find success with Meier or other left shooter from there.
Meier is definitely not the playmaker either of those two players is. Part of me wouldn't mind Hughes in that spot because he can score and also set up Toffoli if he is playing the bumper.

You can do Gaudreau counterfactuals all you want but I cannot imagine that he and Bratt ever play a game together. Bratt would likely have been traded if Gaudreau signed here.

I would totally love to see the Blue Jackets shot in the head in front of their wife and grandbabies, then have their already dead head flattened by a rolling SUV.

By the way, am I the only one that thought they dropped the ball by not bringing in Joe Pesci to be the random hitman to whack Phil? That just needed to happen. I know he was retired from acting for a bit during that time period, but he was really needed for a cameo just to whack Phil. Kind of like his Bronx Tale 5 minutes.
