Vis a vis both the sex cauldron and the Devils or Utica adding another goalie (without subtracting one), I think they closed that place down.
They have 5 under NHL contract with Jeremy Brodeur on an AHL deal. I know Daws is probably out until early 2024, but they will just make do with Kallgren and Brodeur/Brennan until then.
The Comets also have Isaac Poulter returning on an AHL deal. He'll turn 22 in September.
He played 13 games in Utica last season and put up a 7-3-3 record.
He had some really good games and his team played like pure shit i a coule of those losses and HE got them to OT in those 3OT games. Isaac has to play himself out of the net for Brodeur to get the nod.
I see it as Kallgren and then Brennan and Poulter battle it out for #2 before we see Brodeur prop himself up between the pipes. Daws can't get back too soon, but I don't expect big things from him for a while. He has some game time skills to put back in place and that comes from playing. They will have to live with him to see if he can get it together. Those hips come back differently from goalie to goalie. Some never get back to where they were.
I'm counting here and I am having difficulty coming up with 5 goalies under NHL contracts unless you are counting Vitek and Akira. If so, they mean nothing to the Utica situation.
They do have 5 keepers with Kallgren, Daws, and Brennan. Daws is not inthe equation until he is and nobody can guarantee when that will be. We have been told after Christmas.
So, that leaves Kallgren and Brennan
The other 2 that makes 5 are Poulter and Brodeur. That's not a savvy group no matter how you stack 'em up. Wotherspoon and Russo are the keystones on D with the rest of the corps either brand new except Vukojevic who was a depth defender who got 54 games his 1st season here playing for the other guys going in and out of the lineup for various reasons. Last year he got 37.
He should be a surfire top 4 this season, but he's still an "if" question.
Nemec is the real key piece on the D-corps. If he's here, the D could be very solid. If not, they'll have a cobbled together group with only one RH D and 2 LH D trying to play a real good right side. For guys in the youth of their pro careers that's a big ask.
