i dont know why people are lumping mercer into this deal for markstrom really doubt he will be sent there doesn't make sense for markstrom. that would be a holtz or casey and pick/s. mercer would be invovled in a saros level/timeline goalie fitz knows this the calgary gm knows this. doubt it happens
The Calgary "insider," who has apparently broken multiple trades before they've happened, is saying that the deal has been agreed to and that Mercer is "likely" part of the return.

I agree that it doesn't make any sense, but you know how the internet is. There's too much smoke for there not to be fire, but that doesn't mean every single word is true. I suspect there is a deal being worked on, but I think the Mercer part is an exaggeration to get eyes on his rumor.

It doesn't make sense for us, but that is the rumors speculation based on supposed inside sources heard on the Calgary side. It's not our fanbase coming up with that. Most people here don't want to give up mercer for an aging goalie.

Let's see what happens with the news today

I sure as shit hope those rumors ain't true. Desperation move at best and the other GM's know it. Not a fan of giving up assets for a 34 year old goalie despite the good numbers. Don't think Hanifin is an answer to their defensive woes either if he is included.
Markstrom at 34 is not the answer. If you get him for free no objection but you don’t give up young assets for him. Why would be so desperate?

The only possible trade where Mercer is a part of the deal includes Hanifin. He has also been outstanding this season — substantially better than Mercer, who has been fairly terrible. Still, don’t know if I want to give Hanifin the big extension. Don’t know if I’d give one to Mercer either.

This would be another one of those 8+ million 7/8 year contracts to sign him.

That's something I don't understand either. The only thing I can come up with is a desperate act to try and salvage this season to make a playoff push but that's it. Fitz has made mostly smart decisions so I have faith in him and even though I was not a big fan of the Meier trade it made a lot of sense and I'm definitely not giving up on him this early. Thought the fit might be a question mark. Hard to say with him jumping to a new team late last year and being injured this season. If we deal anything valuable for Markstrom I won't be happy. He's a good stopgap at best. Patience now. Ride it out, hope you make the playoffs with what you have and re-evaluate at summer. Or bite the bullet and go for Saros, I'd even rather that than what is rumored at the moment. I definitely don't want another big contract on the books which is something Hanifin would be (a rental Hanifin doesn't make sense at all). Way too heavily rumored for my liking.

The only thing I'm fine with regarding Markstrom is that it solves the issue that would be present in the offseason at the very least. Presumably you're flipping Vanecek (or waiving him) and you likely go with Markstrom and Daws the rest of the season with Schmid trying to find his game in Utica.

You've then got Markstrom for 2 more years with Daws and Schmid continuing to grow.

Really anything else opinion wise from me will depend on the final cost. I really don't even like the idea of giving up Holtz, and he seems like the most likely candidate to go the other way.

I guess I could talk myself into paying up big for a Hanifin/Markstrom package. I kind of wish we used our supposedly great analytics department to find cheap hidden gems versus understand that it's worth paying up big time for these top guys on the market, which seemingly happens a lot (Hamilton/Meier/Hanifin/Markstrom).

Lot of goalie talk but crickets about a profoundly stupid coaching job again. Pissing in the wind trying to skate through a trap. Zero initiative to get the puck deep and dig out. Pp goes even giving up a shortie. Soft, uninspired play.

Before we give up significant assets for a goalie, can we fire Lindy for free first?
Yeah I would have liked this to have happened months ago. Also I'm on team "McLeod is gone, Mercer can't play C, let's change our defensive zone scheme and move Hughes to W now that we have slower Cs." This adjustment seems to be working wonderfully and assisting the goalies. Gonna be painful if such a small coaching scheme change could have solved the achilles heel all season, only to then also pay up big for goaltending on top of it.

What happens next season when Markstrom blows out his hip like Bernier did and we’re stuck with Daws/Schmid AGAIN?

Therein lies the risk.

I'm really wary about Markstrom overall. I like him, but he's got a lot of mileage on him and he's had his injury troubles to begin with.

It's really difficult to find a solution that comforts me. Goaltending is in the weirdest place it's ever been for me as a hockey fan.

If it does include Mercer, it’s probably something like:

Mercer + Casey + Vitek + 2025 1st

For

Markstrom @ 50% ($3M) + Hanifin
