Markstrom would basically be your attempt to stop the vet merry-go-round until one of the young goalies was 100% ready to be the starter.
Exactly, but a top 10 option to stop the merry-go-round for a few years. Not just a stopgap to keep your head above water. Gives you plenty of lead time to evaluate and address the goaltending after his contract expires.

It's less about the fact that he's old and mediocre than it is about giving up good, young cost controlled assets and draft capital for an old, mediocre goalie. If it was just about money, this conversation would be different.

that is the going rate for mediocre goaltending which btw would mean lightyears to us compared to the shit goaltending we have gotten this year. no markstrom isn't going to cost mercer and holtz. realistic its holtz or casey and some fill in IMO. to get mediocre goaltending? i will make that trade

Drafting a goalie in like, 2000 to replace Marty was definitely a choice.
You can argue they start on 1997 picking Damphousse #24 overall.

I'd say Chris Terreri did a pretty decent job of doing that in the late 80s/early 90s.

Sean Burke wasn't any good here, outside of 1988. And by 1988 I mean the 1988 part of the 1987-1988 season. Not 1988-1989 or any time after May of 1988.

He wasn't all that good until going to Arizona in the late 90s where Benoit Allaire was, though he had a couple of good seasons in between leaving the Devils and going to Arizona/Benoit Allaire. He was okay in Hartford.

He was one of the best goalies in the league in the late 90s through early 00s, but he was absolutely not good in the late 80s/early 90s when he was here. Except for that early run to end the regular season and playoffs.

Late 90s/early 00s butterfly Sean Burke was an elite goalie. Late 80s/most of the 90s stand-up Sean Burke was not a particularly good goalie whatsoever.

I know, I was being sarcastic. We're all aware that Schneider was the legitimate replacement for Marty, probably even statistically superior to Marty in his peak years. Unfortunately his prime coincided with some of the worst constructed Devils rosters ever.

His prime? An hour and half?

His prime was about 6 years. Depends if you value longevity or prime performance. Regardless, he was 100% a damn good replacement for Marty.

To put up these numbers with a defense of Greene, Larsson, Moore, Merrill, Gelinas, Schlemko, Mozik, Helgeson, Warsovsky, Harrold, and a rookie Severson is absolutely insane.

Yes. Which is why they are voodoo. You can't reasonably predict performance, but their performance basically determines the fortunes of the team. It's tough unless you happen to already have an elite goalie in the organization.
I think it's more that a small variation in play, in my example, .02 difference in save %, results in a much bigger effect then you would get from skaters.

<45 games because he was stuck behind Luongo and Brodeur. Marty refused to give up his crease when he was washed in 2014, so it’s not Schneider’s fault.
Circumstances suck....all you're telling me is his career was sad story.

There is no reality where Holtz and Mercer is going to Calgary unless someone like Coleman is coming back with Markstrom. It's not happening.

An unsigned Hanifin doesn't make that trade work either.
Wouldn't trade Mercer ...Coleman doesn't move the needle

Reminder any trade would not involve our 2024 1st as it's tied up in the Meier deal. We would be trading our 2025 1st in any mid-season goalie trade.

We probably are not going to the ECF so we should have our 2024 first come draft day.
They can put a condition on that I believe
