Hatakka has looked so poised in the dzone. It’s obviously a tiny sample, but he has panicked under pressure way less than Siegenthaler has this year. I know he’s had injury issues in his career so that may keep him from being a regular, but it’s hard not to love what he’s done.

I still wonder if the real bogeyman with the system is the organization itself, we had a lot of the same criticisms of Hynes and the difficult system

I’m skeptical that Harris and Blitzer are dictating a defensive system. Beyond that you had different GMs and different coaches. If there is an organizational flaw it is that this ownership see to want everything filtered through multiple round tables and to be achieved via consensus. Could that end up with weird compromises? It’s possible but things like how to play in zone defense is really getting into the weeds for anyone outside of the coaching staff. There was no way Shero was dictating that in my view for example.

apparently we came very close to a deal. Markstrom was asked to waive his NTC and agreed before a deal fell apart

the fact that he has a NMC and would waive it for nj should help lower the price. . maybe doesn't want to waive it for another team looking for goalie help?

i dont care if nico plays lights out to close the year and gets us to the playoffs this team still needs a veteran goalie can't have a schmid 2.0 going into next year

Can anyone be kind enough to give me (us) a breakdown on what exactly changed re: the system?
From what Sal said yesterday, the center now has much more defensive responsibilities, covering the low slot when our D chase into the corners. Previously, it would be any forward, often a wing.

Because of this, the center no longer flies the zone as soon as it looks like we get possession, so that results in more support for the D, and shorter breakout passes.

The off wing, however, has the option to go, so they're more playing Jack at wing than C, allowing him to be the deep threat on his line.

Interesting part from the article...

"Yesterday, Elliotte Friedman reported that although the deal died, the Devils and Flames were in agreement on a package that worked for both teams. The Devils were reportedly ready to at least make Swedish sniper Alexander Holtz as part of the transaction.

However, Friedman also reported that he believed the issue between the two teams was Calgary retaining salary on Markstrom’s $6 million cap hit. Now, Seravalli believes the Devils will need to look elsewhere for help in goal."

I'm not the biggest Holtz fan but giving him up for Markstrom would be dumb in my opinion.

The issue with Markstrom is obviously both that it'll cost a pretty penny to get him, and he's getting up there in age. For those assets I'd want a long term solution, not a stop-gap. Add if you need to of course but if we're giving up a few quality assets as is may as well give up a few more to get someone that will be a part of the team for most of, if not all, of their window.

Saros is the only guy I can think of that may be available and may be a good fit in this case.

That's pretty much what i've been seeing in the games at home since Avs game. The center (or covering player) is almost like a sweeper for that mid slot ... He's roaming there and quickly vacuuming up the pucks there (preventing further chaos) and breaking them out more easily.

I'm glad someone official (Sal) has broken it down into something more technical. Visually that is what it looks like.

Now let's keep it a secret so we can build a win streak before teams adjust further!

Markstrom would be enormous for this team. Who cares if he's 34? Take an elite goalie for three playoff runs and then circle back to your goalie options after that. We don't need to find a 10 year solution here.

I mean, with Corey Crawford and Jonathan Bernier in the pretty immediate rear view, I find it very hard to blame anyone for being worried about an older goalie.

I’m sure that’s how Fitz views it but Calgary isn’t going to retain which was the incentive for NJ to offer a young NHL player rather than just a pick and a prospect.

He was an .892 goalie the season prior. No guarantee we’re getting an elite goalie for 3 playoff runs.

Not really reliable examples to support a perceived fear. Corey Crawford decided to retire out of the blue during a weird Covid schedule after leaving the only organization he ever played for. It's not like his play fell off.

Bernier got injured. So again, his play didn't tank due to age. Just a freak thing. Goalies have much more gentle aging curves than skaters.

Bobrovsky is 35 and led the Panthers to a cup at 34. He's also been great this year at 35 years old.
