A big win tonight can change that, but can they capitalize on the momentum going into the weekend? Now that is another story

Like I keep saying

The best thing that can happen to this team if we’re not gonna make the playoffs is to lose more down the stretch than we already were. I can’t see Lindy surviving that.

If we had the made the playoffs more often under Ruff he could probably survive it, but 1 playoff berth in 4 seasons, with seasons 1 and 2 being the worst back to back seasons the franchise had since 85/86 in win percentage? I don’t think so.

I didn’t see him back in 2022 either though, but the stakes went up after last year.

And Fitz no doubt has his finger on the button in game 3, period 2 of last year.

How is it possible folks still don't realize "JUST GET US A GOALIEEEEEE" isn't the answer to fixing this team?? It's baffling. Hell, even walking out of the Caps game Tuesday, the first thing I hear from another Devs' fan is "we need a goalie. now."

Come the hell on. This team is bad. Some of us raised our concerns prior to the season starting and were chastised. They are incapable of playing the right way. They are a one trick pony with zero adaptability. The game on Tuesday was some of the laziest, trash defending I've ever seen at an NHL game. Not exaggerating. Dawes played well despite the Devs routinely letting a geriatric squad walk/pass into the slot repeatedly or dangle through guys like they were McDavid.

This team has no heart. They inexcusably blow dzone coverages in non pressure, routine situations all the damn time and have throughout the entire Ruff tenure. The offense far too often relies on flailing muffin shots at the net and praying for a lucky bounce. Players are not developing at all. The amount of stupid turnovers in the ozone near the blueline is insane.

Ugh. I somewhat expected this could be the outcome this season and I'm still pissed. Not sure who my preference for coach next season is yet, but it has to be someone capable of getting Jack to play a more complete / intelligent game. Same shit happened with Colorado and the Edmonton. Just when everyone thought they had turned a corner, they got a reality check.

Hopefully this game prevents any kind of futures for goalie move especially one with the Devils paying extra for retention in a season where they're less than a coin flip to make the playoffs. Just sell the pending ufa's and if the team on ice is good enough to make the playoffs after that than good for the Devils otherwise just recalibrate in the offseason. Who knows the Devils might be better if they actually play their 6 best defenseman they have in the organization

Fitzgerald just needs to be smart prior to the deadline. Trade Toffoli and maybe get a 1st round pick. Stand pat otherwise and then make some adjustments this off-season. New coaching staff.

Bit of a long rant here.

Biggest problem with this team which could completely ruin the great potential it has long-term is the culture from top down. Specifically the culture of guys not having to continuously earn their spots on the roster and within the lineup. It’s terrible for the team. Ruff gets a lot of blame rightfully but it also falls on Fitz. Certain players just aren’t held accountable. Hughes brothers are a couple of spoiled princesses who will just keep getting trotted out for 20 minutes and PP1 no matter how badly they play. Make mistakes, slam their sticks and then get put back out to do the same shit. Other supposedly solid defensmen like Smith and Siegenthaler continuously play like shit and keep getting throw out there and relied upon. You have to be reasonable and I’m not suggesting veteran or top guys should be scratched or waived whenever they have a bad game or two. But there has to be a culture where roles and ice time are continuously being earned. Smith should’ve been waived months ago. Surviving purely on reputation and supposed toughness.

But then it also goes back to the off-season with some young guys. Guys like Luke Hughes and Foote are penciled into the lineup just because they’re good NA boys from big NHL families. It’s not even that I think Luke wouldn’t or shouldn’t have started on the team. It’s that there was no sense of he’s a new 20 year old and he’ll have to earn it and he’ll have to keep earning his role and spot on the powerplay. It’s just continuously been assumed that he gets that because he’s talented and Jack’s brother. Even Connor Bedard was being told and was aware he had to earn his spot all off-season. Meanwhile other euro’s like Holtz, Hattaka and even Nemec somewhat have to fight for every opportunity and are held accountable for the smallest mistakes. Even if they play well or better than someone above them they’re lucky to get more opportunity. The fact that Hattaka got sent down for Smith is a ridiculously obvious example of this. He was giving the devils a way better chance of winning then Smith does yet was sent down because Smith is the big tough Canadian veteran. Ruff and the front office need to stop relying on their previous opinions of players or the politics of it.

You can’t win with this kind of a culture in any competitive hockey league. I think Fitz is a smart GM but seems to be far too involved in the politics and keeping his connections happy. Ruff is a stubborn clown who’s blinded by his own biases. His likely reaction to things going to shit here is going to be be blaming people far from the worst of our problems.

The Capitals loss was the breaking point for me. I hoped they'd build off Saturdays game against Philly. Complete and total let down against an inferior team and then tonight's pillaging is it. They're toast.

Sit Smith and Mercer. Hell at this point I'd rather Zetterlund. I'd even go so far sitting Luke in an effort to wake these clowns up and while I'd hate Smith in the lineup I'd give DeSimone a look or call Hatakka back up and pair them with Miller.
