I don’t think Toffoli is returning a 1st. I’d take a 2nd and a decent prospect.
a stanley cup winner on a 30+ goal pace should return a first but it depends on the market obviously.

i would also be happy with a 2nd and a prospect

Feels like it’s more likely the Devils target someone young that could help soon or even now. That way they can trade Toffoli and say they’re still not giving up on the season.

I’d love to add someone like Turcotte for Toffoli. Or a similar young center that could step in soon, we’re kind of missing a good 3C right now.

4-3-1 since the Colorado game. Need to go on some sort of streak here… Not counting on it though.
The first games after they were playing different, I felt the wingers were playing wider and higher but the last 2 games I felt the wingers were in their original default positions.

I don’t know if it was accidental or a mirage that I saw positional change but I’m not seeing it lately and the wingers original default position was a bad default position.

—————

If there was a change and it’s shifting back towards the original positions then I would worry the coaching staff will slowly move the players back to almost all the old philosophy over time.

Yea I am seeing the same old stuff the last 3 games.

He’s behind Guentzel, Buchnevich, Tarasenko, and Vatrano. Some teams will want to use their 1st to trade for a defensemen. Wingers are usually the last priority. That said, Toffoli has gone for a 1st in the past, so it’s not impossible.

Monahan returned a first. Not the same position and all I know, but Toff should return a first, especially with retention. Not too familiar with other team’s precise cap situations but yeah.

Market for centers is totally different. If we see a winger go for a rich package that will be a very good sign.

Don’t see LA giving up on Turcotte now after all this time. I’d do it for Kakko. That would be fun. Will never happen though.

I can't speak for anyone else, but the point I was making, re: Shara, is in relation to the discussion about trading Holtz for a goalie. If we are going to just let Toffoli walk because he's too old and slow moving forward, and then deal Holtz to get a goalie...who's replacing the two of them? If we would have kept Shara then maybe it makes a bit more sense to deal him or Holtz for a goalie upgrade. But given he was jettisoned already, trading Holtz and letting Toffoli walk makes us much less well positioned from a depth standpoint moving forward. You're creating a new weakness to address a different weakness (and that's assuming the new goalie even makes that much of a difference). It would not be out of the realm of possibility that we would be gutting our depth in exchange for marginal goaltending improvement. This could have significant negative ramifications long term.

also the idea that we have to replace toffoli's goals - someone else is going to be riding shotgun with hughes and put as a trigger man on the first power play. you're not losing a net of 30 goals because someone else will be able to bury a lot of those chances. there's still the opportunity cost of cap space and play style and the length of term that need to be considered with re-signing toffoli. i think we can replace a lot of his production and use that cap space more effectively.

I just don't understand the "lets trade Toffoli" stuff, because for that to happen they'd need to basically bomb out between now and the trade deadline. As long as they stay hovering around where they have been, I don't see it happening.

I’ve seen Button have some wild draft rankings and quite frankly, don’t take him very seriously. Casey not being in his top 50 prospects solidifies my opinion on Button. Of course Lane Hutson is at 16 though!

Yes they should keep Holtz he will replace Toffoli sir allows Meier back to RW use that asset as part of a goalie trade....Can't wrap my head around dealing a young player who has produced even though the coach has done everything to make it hard for him to produce....Dump the coach
You guys hit the nail on the head….at least from my vantage point.

That's what I mean. Still .500 since the change was implemented. Need to get results.
If the change was really implemented starting with the Carolina game, our goals for are down about 0.70 per game over our total season average.

i don't know about bottom out but as the deadline gets nearer if we're still 7 points out with 5 teams vying for those spaces there should be a dose of reality and smart asset management from fitz

We're gonna win tonight and this place will be euphoric again. At the end of the day, the Devils need to go something like 5-2-1 or 6-2 in their next 8 to merit a trade at the deadline and something like 7-3 or 6-3-1 in the next 10 for there to be a chance at making the playoffs. Let's see if they can do it.
Like I said

It would be the most 23-24 Devils thing to win tonight’s game, everybody is high again and then lose on Saturday afternoon to terrible Montreal. Who we’ve already lost our one home game against this year.

Considering we gave up on Holtz before he ever even had a chance, I'd say it's quite likely the coach at least gave up on Rango too early.
Sharangovich averaged over 16 minutes a night his first two years in the league, and only had his ice time dropped last season (still averaging ~14 minutes a night), when he wasn't very good. Ruff didn't "give up on him". He was an expendable piece that was dealt for a player everybody thought was going to be a good fit.

I'd also like to point out that Sharangovich is currently riding a 9 game goalless streak. He's the same streaky scorer he always has been.

I'm not sure Guentzel moves, I'm not sure Buchnevich moves, I don't think he's behind Tarasenko, a player who was rented last season and had little interest in the offseason, and I'm not convinced he's behind Vatrano, a player having a career year who was rented for a 4th round pick two years ago (or that Anaheim will trade Vatrano).

It's nice when things work out the way they're drawn up, but sometimes Peter has to be robbed to pay Paul. I don't like trading Holtz and I do think letting Toffoli walk could be an error, but this sort of winger is sometimes the easiest one to get.

We aren't 7 points out.

We are 4 points behind Detroit (with a game in hand) and 5 points behind Tampa (with 2 games in hand, and playing them this weekend)

if we beat Tampa in that game, we're practically tied point % wise.
