Naw we’re going to draft another Swiss goalie to specifically annoy @Guadana .

Seriously though, most Russian defenders drafted and tied for 3rd most Russian forwards, but not a single goalie?

Lately we didnt drafted sweden goalie, german goalie(oh, we did), slovakian goalie, norwegian goalie would be awesome, just imagine, we could be the first!, austrian goalie - look how many austrian player was drafted early in recent years, why we cant draft goalie?
I believe another CHL goalie will save us. Its not like those russian goalies helps a lot to the teams to play in conference finals or in finals. Only Vasilevskiy(three times), Khudobin, Varlamov(twice), Shestyorkin and Bobrovskiy in four years. Sorokin even cant help to his team to win in the first round - pathetic goalie, you could watch it yesterday.

I really dont know why Devils dont draft or sign free agents from russian goalie market. Its not like they scared russian players because of politics or time of development without control.

and goalies are taking more years anyway. Its better for them to develop their game in vertical system with the hardest league on the top outside NHL.

Usually I try not to be a doomer about injuries and I try to be more optimistic about them than not.

So I’m gonna say that for Nico he may miss a little bit of time, but I don’t think it will be long term.

I think 2 weeks is possible, but it could be 3-4 weeks or it could be even less than 2 weeks. I think 4 weeks is closer to the worst case, but I’m not actually feeling 4 weeks if I had to guess.

I do think he’ll probably be out both of the next two games, but it’s always possible he isn’t.

I think even if he was mostly fine though, he probably still wouldn’t have practiced today anyway. I think he would have been given the day off if not just for precautionary.

I think the re-evaluated on Monday thing could just be to see if the swelling has gone down and it’s not something too serious.

I don’t even buy the rumor that certain GMs swore off Russian players considering that two of those teams were supposedly Montreal and Philly (lol).

Montreal drafted two Russian players in 2023. Philly even took a Russian goalie in the 3rd round despite the contract kerfuffle with Fedotov.

I don’t see it.

There were strange case with Michkov. Near Mtl media started early with bashing on him and translate fun narratives about him. When he was asked how his interview was going on, he said that mtl asked him on which wing he is playing. Mtl side said that Demidov is better(player from different draft, who cares who is better) and that they couldnt watch Michkov personally and it meaning a lot for them. There were really falsy narratives from them to take Michkov. I would be okay if they would say "sorry, kid is under control, we dont want to take a deal with it and gamble by high pick". It would be okay. I understand that big part of canada community doesnt like russians and they are involving in hockey and political feuds, but again, they drafted russians later(because it isnt not so important? I dont know). From every interview Michkov was far away from idea to not play for any teams. Mtl didnt say that he said "I dont wanna play for you, split head b1tches", because in case "we heard he is a moron and attitude monster" it would be okay to say that he literally said by himself he doesnt wanna play for us.
And now look at it. Michkov is a 1PPG player as 18 yo. If he is cocky - who cares, if he will help for your team to win. Luke Hughes was cocky from some rumors, I believe we are okay with it.

Ducks and Ottawa didnt draft russians in early rounds for many years. Mintyukov was the first for many many long time, even he was from NA junior league. And you know what? May be he is the best Ducks young player outside from top-3 picks.

Thats a reason why I readed and watched a lot about draft and know that california(lefties part of the country) and canada will not draft Michkov. He was too Russian, they talked more than others about his issues. There were a lot of noise. Some youtubers like scouching putted him as #18 in his mock draft in some moment of the season(when he historically ripped VHL - russian analog of AHL).
So I think in some situations some teams have real issues to draft russians. And its... understandable. This is your politics, your owners give you money and they are dancing you, if this is fundamentally for them - it is their choice. Wright or wrong - doesnt matter. But when teams like mtl are playing in "scouting" and trying to "outsmart" other teams(when they didnt want to take Michkov because of fleur) but after they are taking russian players(you know, third rounders are not so politically effected) - its stupid and fun.
And Im happy for that, because they are bashing on Slafkovsky(even if he is a better prospect than their boy Wright), some are bashing Reinbacher(he is a great prospect, there are no fault of him for this pick), some are bashing Michkov(because they cant accept that their gm and scout f4cked up or they are hating russian players by themselves) and repeating false narratives, some are talking about Hutson like about the best defensive prospect and bashing on any other defensive prospects like Luke Huges. And bashing on Casey when some other fans are trying to compare them. Just imagine when Hutson will start to struggle, poor kid. This fanbase dont deserve special kid and I wish wrong hughes will trade Slafkovsky away for Lafreniere from la kings after they will trade Byfield to nyrangers.

Why team like Devils, who drafted a lot of Russian kids, cant draft Russian goalies, I dont know. May be its a fault of goalie scout. Why they cant draft more talented Russian kids from earlier rounds I dont know either. Not every Russian kid will travel to NA, but our Russian scouts did well, most(all?) of them are playing pro. And even cartoonish Popugaev have better pro career than Bernard, Vukoevic, Pytlick or Salminen will have most likely. Im not defending Popugaev, but Im not happy with mid chl talents as mid picks. Orlov was picked in fourth round and now he is looking like may be the best Devils prospect outside first\second rounders and Gritsyuk.

But we cant stop to draft more CHL players with lower ceiling and we cant stop to draft CHL goalies. It doesnt look like CHL goalies is a good trend now. Freaking Meier was traded for two russians and one swede. Our goaltenders are czechian and swiss man. There are only Mercer and Toffoli from our top-9 as CHLers. May be Devils should stop to draft so many players from CHL and so many goalies from there.

Yeah, sore subject. I have my own kryptowood or blacktonite.

How many teams can be bashed for passing on Michkov? I can’t knock a team for taking Carlsson or Fantilli now. Top line center is the premier position and a bitch to fill. It’s an understandable move and probably the right one.

The Coyotes took a different Russian player currently playing in Russia at #6, so no matter what you think of that choice it obviously wasn’t about Russian politics. This is still the weirdest part of the 2023 draft for me and doesn’t get discussed enough lol. (I guess him being 6’4” explains it.)

So two teams? I don’t have a take on Will Smith in particular, but the recent track record of NTDP has been pretty great, and he had monster numbers. He out produced Cooley by a lot and he’s a little bigger than him too. If Smith was in weaker draft he would be a bigger deal.

The Sharks drafted a Russian player late in the 2023 draft. They’ve have signed a bunch of Russian FAs in the past and they continued that trend when they signed 23 year old goalie Georgi Romanov to a ELC in May.

Then there’s Montreal overthinking it and taking RHD? That happens. You can argue we did that with Nemec. (I’m not not arguing against Nemec, just pointing out a similarity.)

I can definitely see some of these teams regretting letting him drop and it sucks that Philly, of all teams, nabbed him, but Michkov is tiny and signed until 2025-26. Going on a tear for Sochi is less impressive then doing it on a better KHL team.

I can’t explain why the Devils scour every random corner of Europe for goalie prospects though, while having no interest in the place that produced some of the best young goalies in the NHL. What can be said really, this is our shared tale of woe.

If someone ever asks me “when did you lose your virginity?” I can’t even remember the actual date, other than Brodeur got his first career shutout in the NHL that same night. And it was definitely in October of 93.

I remember being psyched about the shutout, even if it was over the lame Disney expansion franchise.

That was our 6th win of that season and we openers 7-0-0. I had to just look that up, but I was pretty sure it was stlll on the season opening win streak.

Please tell me it was like the Mystery Alaska movie where you were watching the game at the same time.

For me its SJ and Mtl. California and Canada. Arizona I believe wanted their guy or may be heard from Michkov himself that he wanted to play for BIG market team. Im ok with drafting Fantilli and Carlsson. Both teams are close to compete, both need centers. especially CLB, and both centers have potential to be 90+ pts players. Even if they will not be on the Michkov level, I believe they still be very good two way centers at nhl level. At least its acceptable. Simashev over Michkov... not so likely. But at least its not about politics. I read in Athletics that some gm told that owners said to not draft Michkov even when they were ready to do it. Wish them stay the curse.

Will Smith isnt on the level with Michkov. Even with his great production. The game isnt there, even with his some great tools. Perreault had great production too. Of course Smith is better. But for the beginning its not a fact in stone that Will Smith will play center role in NHL, some parts of his game have issues with center role. And sharks is a team who isnt even close to the end of rebuild. They could easily wait. And the stranger thing is they are not as afraid of russians, they traded Meier for two russians+, they drafted some of them.

We didnt with Nemec, Nemec is very talented, I would say more talented than Reinbacher, there were no Michkovs, we were loaded with offensive talent. Im all in to draft RD with top pair potential. If there are no top line center or elite winger on the board. If Reinbacher will be in Norris conversation for a couple of years, it would be success. Michkov have Kucherov potential.
It was stupid for them, especially with their "low ceiling" Slafkovsky, lonely Caufield and "second line center in a good team" Suzuki. They needed top caliber talent. SJ needs too. Even Arizona have Cooley.

Doing 1ppg on Sochi team is pretty great for his ages. He is 18 yo. He is doing what no one did. If he would do it on a good team, you could say "this is because of good partners and strong defense".

And Im happy for him. I want to see fans, gms and scouts trying to find reasons to not drafting him. We will see how this teams will benefit from their choices in this three years. Or we wont.
Michkov is tiny? Really? He is 18 yo 80 kg player. And he is working on his game, while having Crosby as a role model. And he is doing good steps in this direction.
Three years will pass quickly. And Michkov is gaining a point for the game right now. Three years is a long and pleasant enough time to rationalize their stupidity.

Its not the same level of a problem, but Fitz should learn SOMETHING from good and finally do some work on the russian goalie market. He can draft, he can sign free agent. Even if Schmid will be good 1A, there are no problem to find good and cheap 1B.

I really wasn’t trying to debate the whether all 5 teams were right, chances are some weren’t. I just believe any bad calls stem from old fashioned overthinking rather than murky “politics”. (Will see what these guys do in the NHL before MM’s contract is over in 2025-26 and if it mattered.)

Montreal was convinced of something. They can’t have too many small wingers, MM is risky in some way, they had to get a top pair defenseman. Who knows.

I don’t give a shit, all these losers let Philly have him so I can’t root for him now. (I mean, I don’t wish him misfortune but he’s a Flyer, he can’t win anything lol.)
