Our bottom 6 production is already near non-existent with Bastian being out, it would be a total liability with a Geertsen back there.

I don't really think it's that Bastian is so good, as much as it's the fact that Bastian is better than the guys that have been playing down there on the ''4th line'' and McLeod and Wood have been the ''3rd line'' since he's been out.

With a hodgepodge of square pegs in round holes/and or guys hardly playing anything, rounding out the 4th line.

There’s certainly some argument that if you’re only going to be playing Johnsson 4-5 minutes anyways, there’s some value in having Geertsen or another useless goon there instead.

But that’s only a temporary issue until the forwards get healthy. Part of me is also terrified the second he gets on this team the Devils find a reason to keep him around and he plays more games than he should when injuries strike.

On a side note, Clarke has definitely earned an NHL call up after the roster freeze. Ruff barely trusts Holtz/Johnsson enough to give them a regular shift, might as well give Clarke a chance.

Twitter sport Dr dude said it’s anything from a contusion to blown A-Z ligament.

I like what I saw from Okhotiuk in the preseason, but I love his throwback “you hit Jack/Nico and I’ll f*** you up” attitude. He’s our hardest hitting dman since Volchenkov imo
Have you seen his latest clip that is going around. He crushed a dude with a hit , buddy tried to fight him for the hit , then Okhotiuk one-punched the guy and folded him like a cheap lawn chair.

We need a goon or two.
Or Okhotiuk.. guy can play plis hits hard and can fight if need be . He has a nasty streak to him. I wish we had a forward version of him.

Thompson is the best fit. Has the speed to fit into our lineup, plays hard and has enough skill. Think he’d be better in our bottom 6 than any of the other replacements so far.
Clarke is also worth a shot even though his skating isn’t that great either, It’s not as bad as Holtz, he’s better along the boards, has some good skill and some scoring ability. Think he’s more of a bottom 6 type than Holtz. Maybe try him on the 3rd line at some point.

Love Okhotiuk and can’t wait to see him play but that isn’t exactly what happened. The other team crushed a Utica guy with an hit and Okhotiuk came in and one punched him. Never threw a hit. Still would love to see that in Jersey next time someone takes a shot at one of our guys. Seems like Smith is too slow to even get there.

Point regarding Graves is he is a 2nd guy. Which is why his numbers are so good and why he is more easily replaced then Marino.

Im more wary of the young lefties handling Graves 5v5 duties than his pk minutes.

Again, my point is more wondering what happens if both Marino and Graves are out. Marino plays a ton, his PK minutes have actually increased as the season has gone on.

There was only 1:56 PK time in the Florida game on the Bahl interference penalty:
Siegenthaler 1:17
Severson 1:13
Smith 0:43
Hamilton 0:39

In terms of 5v5:

Severson (TOI 25:42)
He first played with Graves (1:02)
Then mainly with Smith (7:48)
He also was also on the ice with
Bahl (2:34) and Hamilton (2:32)
But ended up mainly with Siegenthaler (9:03), the pair with the most ice time in the game

Siegenthaler (TOI 22:47)
Started with Hamilton (8:56)
He also was on the ice w/
Bahl (5:20) and Smith (2:18)
Then ended with Severson (9:03)

Hamilton (TOI 21:49)
Started with Siegenthaler (8:56)
He also occasionally was on the ice w/
Bahl (4:07) and Severson (2:32)
He ended up with Smith (6:20)

Smith (TOI 20:13)
Played earlier with Bahl (3:52)
Switched to Severson (7:48)
Also on ice with Siegenthaler (2:18)
Ended up with Hamilton (6:20)

Bahl (TOI 15:50)
Started with Smith (3:52)
Also played with
Severson (5:20), Hamilton (4:07) and Siegenthaler (2:34)

Looking at how the Florida game went, if both Marino and Graves are out
Siegenthaler Severson
Bahl Hamilton
Okhotiuk Smith

I haven't been on for a few days so I'm just catching up to this but...

I believe that one of the reasons we signed Smith was because he had extensive experience playing on the right side. If I had to guess, we swing him over to play 3RD behind Severson and Hamilton, play Bahl at 2LD, and Ok at 3LD.

Or maybe Bastian is good? (And Wood’s defense has deteriorated into 2019-20 levels of bad for some reason.)

Is Bahl actually good? Yes? No?

He looks good enough to me, after I thought he looked horrible his first call in 20-21, as well as all but his last call up of last year, which I thought was very good.

Hard to tell

He doesn't play hardly any games, and he sure don't play hardly any minutes when he does get into games.

Definitely

I'm not saying Bastian isn't good, as much as I'm saying I don't think Bastian's absence is why we lost all those games recently, which some have suggested as a possibility.

However, the other two guys don't seem to be as good without him and this seems to confirm it.

And if these are any indication, should we probably look to not extend Miles Wood?

I actually liked Bastian more than most for a while after he was drafted. I think a lot of people were fairly high on him at first, but it cooled down after a couple of years before he made his league debut.

Bastian is in no way the reason we lost games.

I’m currently thinking he’s decent. Kind of in-between. Big guy who can play pretty solid defensively and move the puck alright. Probably a solid 3rd pair option going forward who can fill in on the second pair but probably isn’t a good enough 2nd pair guy long-term on a contender. Almost exactly what we need him to be right now.

Could turn out better than I expect but I don’t think there’s enough there talentwise for him to be a really good top 4 option in the future.

I think Bahl is quite good. His analytics are good but obviously of limited use due to his lack of playing time this season. Not crazy about him with Smith.
