Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - playoff edition

I stay away from analysis that categorically sums up a player’s contributions to “shots and passes.” J Fresh knows this and thus calling this data “Does Stuff” which carries a less authoritative tone.

Anyway, Chandler Stephenson is good and the Kraken were terrible. Both are facts.

I think Stephenson is closer to bad than good now

Stephenson is straight up bad. He just put up a 39% xG with the SECOND WORST on the team being a 44%. The minutes without him the Kraken had a 49%. Being 10 pts worse than your team is out of this world bad

The only possible positive spin you could put on Stephenson is he's a 3rd liner being tasked with being a 1st liner. Even then though I'm not going to confidently say he'd be a good 3rd liner and he's 31 making 6.25 for another 6 years. Just f***ing brutal. It was clearly an awful signing from the moment it was made and year one went predictably terribly.

Interesting about Bratt.

I didn't realize he was (that) injured. Maybe explains some of his lack of goal scoring in the Canes series. Though, it's also pretty impressive how much he did create if his shoulder was that screwed up.
Well having to carry Haula and Mercer's sorry asses couldn't have been good for his shoulders. :sarcasm:

what is he good at anymore?

the Kraken were bad, yes. Probably party because he was f***ing awful. He had a xG under 40%!! Worst on the team by far. Only 5 forwards in the entire NHL had a worse xG% than him (min. 500 minutes at 5 on 5)

Wonder what Bratt was battling through. Gotta figure it was something somewhat significant if he elected to have surgery after the season ended.

At least that explains why he couldn't hit the f***ing net and refused to shoot a lot, and in the playoffs played a bit more of a perimeter game.

My God, this team can't catch a break.

How many times do we have to tell you- Stephenson is not worth that contract and the coming years are only going to make that more clear.

Yep, the Stephenson signing is disastrous and anyone who wanted to sign him to that deal was pretty quickly and unequivocally proven wrong.

Sign Glass to a cheap deal to be the 3C next season.

Cannot extrapolate what Stephenson did on the Kraken, to what Stephenson could have done on the Devils. Stephenson playing 3rd line minutes on this Devils team (a perennial contender), looks much different than him playing hard 1st line minutes for the Kraken. He would have the Tavares role on this team, not the Matthews role. Even playing so poorly, he has just 7 fewer points than Cotter and Mercer combined. I'm using points because I'm immune to xG. Took that vaccine before the pandemic.

The deal is ugly for the Kraken because they are a desperate team. This would not have been an ugly deal for a team that's 2 bottom-6 pieces away from winning the Cup (which I think we are). And UFA contracts are all about the player and less about the team. The players earn their career paycheck and the teams use big UFAs to fill major gaps they can't via trade/draft/etc. I don't expect him to finish all 6 years in Seattle, and if he does, that means Kraken have improved.

I look forward to seeing what Bennett gets on his next deal.

Stephenson is overpaid and not worth considering.

Glass should be no higher than 4C on a contender. If we sign him, it needs to be sub $2M and for a 4C role.

Your commitment to this belief is admirable. I'll give you that.
