Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part III

This playoff format does really suck. Right now Carolina and NJ are 2nd and 3rd in the conference and would play each other round one. That's crazy.
NJ/Canes road to the Cup is potentially:

RD1 vs. 2nd/3rd place in Conference
RD2 vs. Atlantic Division Winner
RD3 vs. President Trophy Winner

LOL comical

Saad might have some left but he’s been skating in cement since his Columbus days

Probably would be more of an offseason trade but I wonder if something around Nemec for Owen Beck + higher of Montreal's 1st round picks could be a deal that makes sense for both teams. Nemec fits Montreal's needs for RD and has experience playing with Slafkosvky, while Devils get a long term NHL ready two way center and a top 15 pick to either trade for an impact piece or use to bolster a depleted prospect system.

Don't you start

Maybe so but at least for a half season he’s going to be extremely motivated.

His skill set also seems like the perfect guy to potentially compliment Hischier/Hughes or play on a solid third line. It basically would give the Devils another Palat option.

If he gets hot, you could make a case that the only extra need is 3C. Maybe even go all out for an option like Nelson.

To throw out something absolutely ridiculous with a 97 mill cap

Dougie (2 mill retained)+???

Anton Lundell+Spencer Knight

I don’t think there’s any chance Florida trades Lundell, and I don’t know where Knight’s at, but Florida is the team I come up with too for Dougie.

The late of offense from their blue is glaring and they don’t have any in-house solutions in their system.

They’ve typically found smart budget adds for their defense but I’m not sure that fixes this if Ekblad walks and they’re just Forsling and a few depth pieces.

I could see them moving Rodrigues.

If the cap goes up to 97 million I see no reason we should have even the slightest bit of difficulty moving Hamilton if we so desire.

That would be each team getting an extra 9 mill in cap compared to this year (so off the bat, that's a dougie hamilton worth of space)

Dallas, Florida, stick out as key warm sunny contenders in need of a RHD.

Colorado (looked in on seth jones), Philly (have you seen their PP), Detroit, Carolina also come to mind (assuming burns retires, also their PP isn't quite clicking this year compared to years previous).

Other sneaky teams: Vancouver if they're clearing out a bunch of high priced space (certainly need a RHD), Boston and NYI (sub 14% PPs), Minnesota, WPG if they lose Pionk, MTL trying to take the next step,
I can't see potentially the two best teams (DAL and FLA) taking on a bad cap hit for 3 years, same with COL.

If there are teams that are looking at $ spent rather than cap space then there could be fits but the 10 team trade list will make it challenging.

Don't think Wild would be an option either, they have Faber and several top D prospects.

Saad also has a history of being a pretty big playoff performer. Always good to add those guys as your marching toward the playoffs.
It looks like he has had 2 notable playoff runs where he was productive and none in 2020-2021. I don't know if that is a large enough of a sample size. Also he is clearly on the decline.

This doesn’t seem right. Round 1 would be against each other, round 2 would be against Washington/Wild Card 2, round 3 against whoever comes out of the Atlantic (as always) and round 4 against the Western champ (as always).

The first round matchup is brutal, but that round 2 matchup against the winner of Washington and the last wild card is nothing to complain about. The rest of the matchups are standard for any playoff year.

League needs to go back to 1-8, 2-7, etc.

I could see Florida having interest in Dougie, But their not trading they're future 2C for him.

Dallas is the spot for him. They have an awful powerplay with no big shot up top, they need to use Heskianen defensively more, the right side of their defense sucks. Issue is I don't know their cap stuff totally but just on the outside, Dallas screams Hamliton trade to me

The cap should be up by a lot more by then and we'll have Palat and Dillon off the books right when Quinn is a UFA. Perhaps by that time Dougie will be gone or close to it.

It's still not gunna be realistic. Quinn is easily worth max money. They can't afford that, and it wouldn't be a good idea for team building imo.

I think Brock Nelson would be a great fit, but may be too expensive in assets. RoR should be cheaper and a good addition too our 3rd, line center. I’m even interested in Miller. Liked him since he was a Ranger. I’m not worried about him being a distraction. The problem is his contract. Can we offered it?
