Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

Zito is a good GM

the Seth Jones trade was bad

both things can be true.

I don't think it's a bad deal. It's like a rental+1 that has 5 more years on it. The Panthers do not have that large of a window left, their core besides Tkachuk are all hitting 30, there wasn't an RHD available like Jones, Knight was never going to play on the 2025-26 Panthers.

i do think we put up a better fight than the caps, we actually had the better of carolina at even strength we just couldn’t score and our special teams were god awful.

what’s frustrating is that if we just kept up our special teams strengths from the regular season and/or didn’t get cursed with 9 separate misfortunes like homer’s softball team we probably could have taken the caps too
Is that goal differential or shot differential? A lot of the goal differential victory came from Andersen getting injured and Kochetkov coming in.

The team did regroup after game 1 and yeah I can tell myself a healthy lineup beats or at least outplays Carolina, but I'm not gonna talk the team up too much into a moral victory here. A lot of obvious team flaws did become apparent this postseason and in the back third of the season.

Where can such information be accessed?
TSN has a very detailed account of basically every day and every single testimony. Just google “hockey Canada trial” and feel free to go back to their articles from two weeks ago and go day by day.

I’ll go ahead and take the hate but if I’m Fitz I’m calling McLeod to get conversation started on bringing him back next year. Unless something crazy comes in the upcoming testimonies next week.

get the f*** out of here with this shit.

the championing of McLeod is absolutely sick. Take that shit elsewhere.

Many of you recall the (in-)famous quote from Neil Smith about how the Devils were a bunch of interchangeable parts... I think he meant it as a compliment or at worst a marvel although people tried to spin it as a negative.

But we were. We even put far-too-slow-for-NHL (but too good for AHL) Steve Brule into a playoff game and no big deal.

To me there was a system played across the organization and it permeated the NHL team as well as the AHL team. We invested in the AHL team and made sure they played the same system. Are we still doing that? We know that we aren't really investing in the AHL team. At least, we aren't doing it successfully (e.g., poor drafting, fewer college and CHL FAs, allowing major glaring gaps like C happen).

It's something we need to build back toward. Successful teams are like that. I feel that Carolina is much like that despite Dundon and his galaxy brain cancelling an AHL affiliate for a number of years. But Rod Brind'Amour has a system and you buy into it like it's jesus christ on a grilled cheese or you're gone.

Oh yeah, it was definitely you that said the same thing to the guy who suggested this two weeks ago. I thought long and hard about whether to make this post because I’d get the same response.

Clearly they made a sick act and huge mistake but it’s looking consensual based on the info now. 1.5 years of lost career plus getting hounded with a bad reputation for the rest of their life is a good enough punishment to me BASED ON WHAT I HAVE READ THE LAST TWO WEEKS. I do not agree with main board posters saying they should sue for lost wages, they do deserve some sort of punishment.

Posts like yours are why I decided to bring it up actually. But not a fight I feel like continuing to do so this is all I’m saying on this matter and I just encourage people to spend 2-3 hours reading all the testimony and other evidence that is now public.

I appreciate it. As time permits I'll review those. That said, articles are likely inherently biased as well. The full court transcript would be better, but presumably those aren't made public.

I don’t think Dundon cancelled the deal with Chicago. The issue, I believe, is that the Wolves are independently owned and wanted to be competitive. Dundon / the Canes wanted a place to develop their prospects regardless of AHL outcome. Chicago decided to go without an NHL partner. The Canes then tried to buy a new AHL franchise - which was denied.

The Devils could find themselves in a similar spot given that they now are affiliated with an AHL team vs owning one outright.

I don't think anyone is championing McLeod. I think for many following this day-to-day and really seeing the case vs. what was originally reported - just based on the proceedings - things will likely end in a acquittal, by a judge no less. Crazy there's no jury.

If that happens, I find it hard to believe the players won't have a good argument to be allowed back into the league. Not that all of them are even still playing or were ever bonafide players. Hart, Dube, McLeod were the only real players here.

Anyway - People can feel how they feel about it, no sense of arguing whatever. Someone will give these guys a shot, and if they're acquitted - they're acquitted.

I'm sure many in here revere Scott Stevens who, if you google around, was accused as well - by an underage girl no less - to something arguably much worse than what is alleged here. Back then, the police felt they should be charged, but a grand jury didn't move forward with the case. Different eras, but would you have held the same standard or even today, should Scott never be associated with the team or league ever again?

if he did it, yes I would hold that same feeling.

I already have some of those feelings about Brodeur because of his political affiliations lately.

There is a lot more to life than just sports. Hell, I think Fitz should be fired for holding a god damn press conference for himself the day before all these stories dropped a few year ago.

Saying "Fitz should call McLeod next week" while he is on TRIAL for a serious sexual assault allegation is insane. I don't know how you can say otherwise.

Scroll down to bottom and you’ll get to some of the play by play from yesterday from the reporters there. They update pretty frequently throughout the trial.

The last piece I agree with you. While the trial is going on is not OK. Once it's over, cross that bridge.

I get not wanting him back, and don't think it's worth the PR or anything even if he is someone who could help, let someone else take him if he's allowed back in the league. But this reaction shows you really haven't been keeping up with the case.... I'd dial it back a bit.

the case where the defense lawyers are playing games trying to get a new jury every 5 minutes?

that case? I sure have been keeping up. They are all scumbags. Thanks for your concern though.

The testimony that described what she said and did makes things seem a lot different. You can think that's all made up and that's fine. But if it's true, it makes this a lot messier. And for sure, they absolutely could be seen as scumbags even if she paid them all to participate. It's just as weird and gross to me as it is to you and a lot of other people, but things can be gross and out there with out being criminal.

And also if you were following, you would have seen the defense fought against the jury going away and even put out a statement saying so.

Sorry guys but if Fitz thinks McLeod could be a 3C option over qualifying Glass at 2.5M then yes it is potentially Devils news. I will respect the mods' wishes to not discuss it in this thread further, but if you go to the main board thread you will see me there and I don't like appearing two-faced and saying two different things in two places.

Potentially is a real stretch…the trial has to first end with a not guilty verdict (none of this case got thrown out on a technicality junk) and Fitz then has to be desperate enough/shameless enough to take a massive PR hit when he’s the same guy who hid behind the PR of his own extension presser when this first happened. That’s two pretty big steps to get to potentially, it’s not even a debate until and if step one happens.

Would take Tavares as well
Tavares looks very old and spent in this series. And has a game - sort of lacrosse on ice - that always depended on maximum physical engagement and that isn’t the kind that ages well. He’s also slow on his feet. I can’t see him as a good fit for us or a good value either, as he won’t come cheap and will be looking for some term, I expect.

I'll be curious what happens when JT. My gut is that he stays with Toronto one year deals at like 5 million
