The Devils can’t do this because the Carolina wingers play closer to them and so the Devils defenseman don’t have a long time to pick out a passing or shooting lane.

Bratt wasn't in any lane... that's why Burns had a clear shot on net. Bratt was to Burns' right taking away the corner? If he's in front of Burns that makes that shot very difficult to get through but he wasn't.

No, he was boxing out and trying to get out of Schmid’s sight line. Varies by coach but a lot of coaches teach that and I personally prefer that. The shot block belonged to Bratt and he was too scared to block it
