Chatfield with 1 minor (1 misconduct) in 7 games while playing some tough minutes as Ghost isn't the strongest in his own zone is very impressive.

He looked great in this game making exactly the kind of plays under pressure that other teams bottom pairs struggle to.

Weren’t we something crazy like 7-0 while Aho was out earlier this year? I forget the exact number of games but we went on a nice run without him.
What a bum. His silly breakaway again reminded me of the Fail Safe (1964) movie. He elevates a lil bit, he's home. But no. No way.

If he had the breakaway finishing skill of Hintz, Canes would have an extra one goal per game. But it is what it is.

Jordo with speedy wingers was super kryptonite tonite. Koko against Nico was another masterpiece from Rod.

Still scared; but good G1.

Such an under the radar piece here who has had a big contribution to our success. Also Noesen too who has gotten a bit more attention. I'd try to lock up Chat for a while this offseason, I think he'll only get better.

Don’t see the Devils complaining about their PP from their guy falling down and Burns getting called for tripping and not even touching the guy.
This series is unique. Both fanbases agree the reffing and TV commenting is absolute horseshit.

I want to see more of this. We don't get this in happy old Finland where we just fight and they laugh.

Wow, this is a sports media gem. Kudos to the Carolina organization for seizing the opportunity to give a Philly fan of Ghost a Canes jersey of Ghost.

Also, people didn't mention it, but the Canes were smart enough to give him the black jersey with the flags and hockey stick logo since he had that logo on a paper taped to his Flyers jersey. They realized that probably was his preference instead of the 25th anniversary red jersey.

Anyway, I laughed out loud, and this was an entertaining moment.

I mentioned this in another thread.

Leading penalties taken / 60 last year in the playoffs for Carolina:

1) Lorentz (due to a misconduct though, only 1 minor taken)
2) Brendan Smith (6 minors taken)
3) Martinook (only 2 penalties taken so due to small sample size as he only played 6 games)
4) Svechnikov (7 penalties taken)
5) Ian Cole (5 penalties taken)
6) Neiderreiter (5 penalties taken)
7) DeAngelo (6 penalties taken)
8) Trocheck (5 penalties taken)

So other than Martinook, who only played 6 games, every one of these players is not playing for Carolina in these playoffs.

What happened to Lorentz?

(The D outside Slavin has been a revolving door for years. Nowadays I never expect the same Canes team as last year. But that's just the D corps, not the team D, mind you.)

Nino, Tro, okay I get that, but Lorentz?

Are you asking why they traded him? It seems pretty straightforward, he was the main asset that SJ wanted in exchange for Burns. You definitely take the Norris-winning top pair defender over the 4th line winger, even if said winger is likeable.

new plan to get a cheap jersey, find someone selling an edmonton PJ or stepan Arizona jersey for next to nothing, wear it to the game, get a 180 dollar hurricanes jersey for next to nothing. yay

Can't wait for ESPN/TNT to slobber all over NJ's knob all game and series long.

What will the talking heads story line for the Canes be?

A. No star power
B. Too many injuries
C. Jaccob Slavin's stick
D. All of the above
Turns out, it was E. the announcers weren't bad, but the studio was unbearable with PK Subban going super fan boy over New Jersey.

What was worse is that Subban's fellow commentators in the studio were worn down by him and they started to favor NJ by the 2nd intermission after they previously were trying to reign in Subban's obnoxious fanboyism in the 1st intermission (see "missed calls" they discussed in the 2nd intermission), but I guess because NJ had a better 2nd period and scored a goal, they were gonna appease him.

The play by play announcer and color commentator, on the other hand, overall weren't bad (certainly compared to what we've had before nationally) and actually had nice things to say about Carolina versus PK Subban's therapy sessions as a huge NJ fan on a national broadcast.
Subban getting all butthurt after Biz (?) yelled at him is hilarious. Cry more, dude.
What did I miss?
Why is PK doing this game… go sit in the devils home booth ffs… suposed to be a national broadcaster
Yes, exactly one of the things I was thinking. He'd be fine for New Jersey's broadcast team, but not for a national broadcast. It's okay for an ex player for a team to like said team for a national broadcast, but at least f***ing try to seem at least somewhat neutral.

Also, some 3rd party fan on the main board said that PK Subban's constant "look at me" routine gets old.
I predicted 5-1 to a coworker who is a Devils fan this morning. Come on boys make me look like a genius fortune teller.
You right now but kind of justifiably:

This looks like it could have originated here.

Maybe it's a coincidence, but I wondered if they/one of them lurk our board (or maybe post here) and they saw Stickpucker's comment about Back to the Future with the Mom part.

Great point + what's interesting about this series versus the Isles' brute force is that the Cane's 3rd pair's speed is outstanding and thus is a reasonable counter to the Devil's strength.

No joke, Chatfield is a f***ing revelation for our defense. He's quick, has the ability to contribute offensively at any given moment, but is solid enough defensively to be put in some tough situations and still be ok. He's every bit the perfect 3rd liner that we've been searching for the last 3 or 4 years. It'll be interesting to see where we go from here going forward.

As an aside, Kotkaniemi has very quietly become the player we hoped he would be, and I don't think enough people are talking about it. He's handling some solid minutes every night and his lines are beginning to dominate play when they're out there. I mean hell, he centered Martinook and Fast last night and those 3 guys took the game over.

Interesting adjustment to the Devils having more depth by basically creating 2 matchup lines to go against their top 6.

Nothing major, just they Subban is openly rooting for the Devils to win and tried to interrupt one of the other intermission cohosts in the middle of him trying to talk about the Canes dominance in the first period so he could try and pump the devils tires. The cohost kinda snapped at him and PK acted all sulky for the rest of the game.

I mean, he's actually a former Devil, I'm perfectly happy with him cheering for them. And at least he's open about it, a lot of media figures aren't transparent even though they have a very apparent preference.

I don't mind being a cheerleader when it adds an element to the broadcasts. David Ortiz during the MLB playoffs when he's cheering for the Red Sox or against the Yankees is a great example. You darn well know he has a preference and he doesn't shy about playing it up, but he's also capable of having good breakdown conversations and take an honest look at how things are going in games.

PK is just a salty fanboy who is incapable of allowing any other opinions to be shared that aren't his own. He constantly talks over the rest of the studio crew to make sure his viewpoint is front and center. You can tell the rest of the studio can't stand it, and it actively takes away from the segments.

Biz, on the other hand. He's definitely a Toronto or Arizona homer, but he makes a joke out of it. It makes the non-ESPN broadcasts legitimately fun to watch.

And at other points in the season, Subban has been pretty complimentary of the Canes. Said he almost ended up here and was talking the Canes up pretty good. He's rooting for the Devils which is natural. A lot of guys he's probably friends with are still on that team.

What's also interesting is that they've also effectively created 2 matchup lines that not only can hold their own defensively, but are more than capable of taking it the other way and producing should the Devils players get caught cheating. Makes it harder for them to do what they want to do when they also know any mistake could easily end up in their own net, especially with their goalies looking human.

Oh, yeah I saw the intermissions from our game last night. You mentioned Biz (but I re-read it and you had a question mark) and I assumed Biz yelled at Subban previously; maybe during the Rangers-NJ series.

It was Ryan Callahan last night that was trying to reign Subban in during the 1st intermission, and not Biz. To your point, Cally said in response to Subban pointing out they kept talking about Carolina during the 1st intermission, "what is there to talk about with New Jersey?" Or something very close to that with Cally saying NJ had a very bad period.

Carolina was dominate in the 1st period. Then Subban had a problem with showing the Carolina goal replays. The dude needs to get a grip. He was acting more like a fan on HF boards than a national broadcaster.

I wish Kevin Weekes was on there so we'd have a Carolina fan to at least somewhat balance out Subban's obnoxious fanboyism.

Also, someone on the main board said Subban only played for NJ for 1 year; lol. You'd think he had played for them much longer with the way he was acting.

To me, it was his past compliments of the Canes that made it even more shocking how much of a New Jersey fanboy he was. I thought he liked the Canes, or at least more than some of the old timers like Keith Jones, Messier, and Chelios.

I've been low-key about it over yonder at the Devils forum but some of their's idea of a match-up between Hischier and Kotkaniemi... They need this fella Hischier to score before Koko Miami, don't they?

[all my southern accent is learned from the George Wallace mini-series. Is that okay?]

Jarvis is a gem.

I found out "jarvis" is one of the inflectional forms of "jarvinen".

There's an old fight in general linguistics who should rule grammar, whether it's pragmatics, purpose, or semantics, meaning. Syntactically, however, Jarvis is a half Finn.

Jarvinen [lake-y] is one of the most common family names in Finland.

At the best case, there's no connection. He's just Seth.

At the worst case, he's suffering from a permanent inflection. This could be LTIR.

Let us all have a big hand out for Jarvinen to be back and score more goals.
