Why does this mean Severson is going? I know he is UFA next year, but the team clearly want to compete next year. They need three good pairs. I think this was more about cutting bait on Smith and getting value for him.

That’s not to say they are going to re-sign Sevs. But I could see them playing out the deal let him walk and let Nemac take his spot next year.

letting him walk for free would be a mistake.

You have two other RHDs signed longterm and you just picked one 2nd overall who might make the team. He should be moved IMO.

what’s marinos contract lookin like?

5 more years at $4.4

I find it kind of wild that they trade him after the first year of the 6 year deal they gave him.

But yeah, this definitely feels like a Severson replacement. Likely saves $2 million+ compared to extending Severson, plus the pieces you get for trading him.

Bummer about Smith but it was hard to see him lasting here much longer, and the Devils got value for him. Hope he does well in Pittsburgh, he's a really smart player with some physical limitations, but I think he can be a solid defenseman.

Marino's a great add, means the Devils don't have to think about extending Severson, not sure they deal him, I could see them just rolling with these three guys at RHD, that leaves Nemec to play in Utica much of the year, which should be where he stays - Slovakia to the NHL is an enormous jump. Marino's a solid defenseman, hasn't taken the jump hoped after his rookie season but he should do just fine here.

Pens fan here. You guys will like Marino as long as you don't expect too much from him offensively. His offensive instincts stink but he can skate the puck out of trouble as well as anybody and he's very solid defensively.

Sometimes he's weak in front of the net. Ideally paired with a guy who can handle that.

I think they let nemec play in the AhL. He needs to get used to NA ice, and work on his closing gaps on rush d.

We aren't a contender yet so it'd be wise to get a value from Severson and not treat him as an internal rental. And of course, there's zero point to re-signing Severson, while we already have Hamilton and Marino on the right side, we can save money by playing a cheap veteran or ELC on the 3rd pair in the future. So I think this means that Severson is gone.

With that being said, getting Marino for Smith + 3rd is a very good trade. Well done, Fitz.

You get the roster spot for Nemac and the cap space. If you want to compete next year using Severson as a self rental isn’t the worst option. Letting guys walk for nothing hurt when you don’t have replacements lined up. They have a replacement lined up who should be ready for next year.

I'd hate to see Severson leave but at this point there's no room and he'll be the odd man out. They cannot just let him walk for free though.
