HAS to be out of shape and didn’t skate much during the prolonged offseason. There’s no other way a decent NHL player is suddenly this bad.

Hes been awful

however Joey Anderson never really had a chance on this roster with the influx of talent coming up. In todays NHL you need some size and Joey would never have been above the fourth by 2023 the latest.

Johnsson is currently playing worse than Joey (which is wild) however I do expect he rounds to third line form soon enough. He wont be a top-6er though how some people wanted

maybe he is working with a lingering issue

The loss of Anderson isn't why this trade might hurt, it's cause he's signed for 2 more years at an above market rate for a bottom 6 winger, and he might not even be a good bottom 6 winger.

Its only two years and hes only making 3.4m per. We wont be 3.4m tight to the cap before it expires

isnt a concern in the least bit idt

See that’s where you are wrong. I saw a documentary once where a man who had the power to grow metal claws out of his hands and heal from any injury had his abilities removed by a machine invented by a man trying to steal his powers. It was truly chilling and it is easy to see how a similar machine could be used against a hockey player. It wouldn’t surprise me that something exactly like this happened to Johnson. At least that is a lot more likely to me than some sort of prosaic “let himself go” nonsense.

It's not gonna stop the team from re-signing Hughes or anything but it's a bad contract. If he's truly below replacement level (like he currently appears) it will definitely suck to have to carry for 2 more years.

It sometimes takes a while for a player to adjust to new teammates, new coaches, living somewhere different, etc. Not to mention the general strangeness of this season without a normal training camp and preseason. I get that with fewer games there isn't as much time to let him have the usual adjustment period, but it's still too early to just write him (or anybody for that matter) off.

He’s starting to remind me of when Grabner came here and was terrible.

Or the second time Ponikarovsky was here (although even he had a goal in his first game back) and he turned into space junk after a few games and rocketed himself out of the league.

Actually, he’s been even worse than those guys BUT! It’s fortunately been far fewer games than what those guys sucked for.

Speaking of which, how many Devils players have been on the Space Junk list?

Can you list them, Bleed?

I think what we need to keep in mind with Johnsson is that -- it has not been just 5 games of him playing poorly. He played poorly all of last season with Toronto as well. I'm not sour grapes-ing over the trade here, I'm just saying that there's no reason to keep him in the line-up over better players like Boqvist and Merkley.

I'm not trying to be vitriolic or insulting, but when I read all these hot takes saying that the Devils "need to find a way to get Johnsson going", it's almost funny. We're not talking about a guy with high-end skills, compete or hockey sense. We're talking about a guy with a pretty good shot and nose for the net who had one year (at 25) where he had a nice goal output (20) because he received PP time with Auston Matthews and John Tavares.

The fact is simply that Gusev and Zacha struggled the first four games with Johnsson on their line and then played their best game of the season as soon as Johnsson was taken off that line. McLeod and Bastian definitely dipped a bit in productivity with the inclusion of Johnsson on their line. Johnsson has one shot in 5 games. Again, I'm not trying to dig on the guy. But it's just time to sit him down and go with better players. There is just no way Johnsson is one of the 8 best wingers on the Devils right now, so let's play the guys who make the team better.

Again, we need to go back and watch film of Johnsson on Toronto last year. It's pretty ugly. He's not in a 5 game slump. He's been playing poorly for over a year now. It's time for the Devils to play better players.

This situation reminds me of when we brought over Marcus Johansson from Washington, a forward with some success on a loaded team then gets here and is basically lost and useless

Johansson was never this bad (then again he probably was at some point, as it’s only been 5 games), he was just incredibly underwhelming from his Washington days.
