Let’s please not judge a 20 year old’s hockey sense from 10 minutes of ice time in an 11am pond hockey scrimmage in July?
He's not a play driver or facilitator (although he has shown excellent passing touch to me in the past season). I think if he gets to play with a consistent center and only has limited obligations he can score. I won't ask him to self create beyond the circles and I won't expect him to carry the puck much above the circles either. If he just concentrates on getting into scoring position when Jack/Nico/Bratt/Palat/Mercer/Hamilton/Severson/Nemec have the puck in the offensive zone he should be ok if he remembers to skate back on defense.Very small sample size but I think Holtz can make a career out of playing with Jack at the very least but I'm not so sure much past that unfortunately. Hopefully this was just still a warmup for him.
Who is Gilligan then?I don’t know about you guys but I’m calling Nemec “the professor” from now on.

I mean i get what you’re saying but yes they are lol.Nobody is judging it just from this.
Why @JimEIV of course.Who is Gilligan then?
Really liked Nemec's game, and the kid hasn't played in months, just got drafted and was probably hella nervous. Things looking up.
I think he was coasting but he’s always really calm. Normally he’s more aggressively trying to push up ice and even carry it himself. Only saw him do that once at the end with goalie pulled. And they scored off it with him getting an assist. It would be interesting to know if this was Nemec playing at his hardest and he’s just a super calm player or if this was Nemec taking it easy and he was still able to calmly control much of the play.
Either ice or THC, whatever it is-keep it up!Dude has ice in his veins, no way he was nervous.
Clearly head and shoulders above everyone out there.
He’ll obviously need to work on his play in the dzone, but I can see him being a nice partner for Luke eventually. A calm partner that makes the correct play so Luke can go nuts.Dude has ice in his veins, no way he was nervous.

Well when you get taken in the top ten of the draft and aren't immediately setting the world on fire (or at least being Dawson Mercer) it's low-hanging fruitI can already see Holtz is taking Zacha's role as the #1 punching bag in forums, I'm definitely staying out of this one
I think the difference is that no one is questioning Holtz's effort (at least so far). If Zacha was a try hard that just turned out to be less talented than expected I think he'd still be here.Well when you get taken in the top ten of the draft and aren't immediately setting the world on fire (or at least being Dawson Mercer) it's low-hanging fruit
One more year of McCarthy in the NCAA could be beneficial. His progression has been very strong so far, he's getting better with the puck and his defensive play is already at an AHL level. One more NCAA season, one AHL season and McCarthy should be a nice 3rd pairing D in the big show.Mccarthy looks very solid too. Wish he could be going to the ahl this year to see more of him
I'm worried Holtz is going to receive the post-Zacha backlash of being drafted above players better than him. Holtz will score a lot of goals in the NHL, which is why the Devils drafted him. It's unfair to him to compare him to superior players drafted later like Lundell, Jarvis and Mercer.Holtz skating is absolutely fine. Such an overblown narrative.
Nemec was just a top 10 defenseman in the 6th best men's league in the world as a teenager. He's exceptional.Nemec is so so good. Holtz finally looking better in the backend of this period.
I've probably written 500 pages own the Stillman pick since its been made. Sure, it hurts that the Devils passed on Scott Morrow and Aatu Raty for a player they could have traded down for.The thing about Lars and I'd say the same for Smith, was that they wanted to play a smooth poised patient game without making the kind of reads and threat assessment that those types of players make. Both of their IQs were not as good as advertised.
We'll see how Nemec progresses. But I agree, he's got that calm demeanor we've lacked since Nieds and Paul Martin left.
Stillman winning over this board would be f***ing hilarious.
I love your enthusiasm, but these are not the statements I would want remembered after a 3-on-3 game. I can say with full confidence that both of these kids will be outstanding NHLers, and the incredible emergence of Slovakian hockey is something we should all be excited about.hot take: Nemec will be better than slafkovsky
